the shark probably let him go because, a common way that sharks kinn their prey is that they bite them and then they swim away and let their prey lose blood and become very weak so that the sharks can come back again and eat it easily when its almost dead
Or because sharks tend to "test" their prey, bumping it, tasting it, "nibbling" if you will. I dont think a shark would use the tactic you mentioned on human size prey, if it was a large one.
