The argument about these two ladies have been going on for years. I personally respect both of the ladies. Both of them have made way for many women of all color to come into the music industry. In so many ways Tatiyana Ali puts me in the mind of Diana Ross and Fantasia Channels Patti. Everyone knows that Patti is a force to be fooled with. Her register and range is uncomparable to all. @jazzscherzo I'm not really talking about their careers. And that's the thing. Gordy did not care about any of the relationships involved. It was all about the product. Nobody is fooled. At some point, it was all about Diana and how much mileage her appeal had. You also have to realize that Berry had to push Diana at times, so he could have encouraged (and I'm sure he did) others. But in reality, all success is fleeting. Time puts everyone in context.

I think the whole hype about Patti stealing the limelight from Diana is ridiculous. You can see Diana waving Patti in @1:36 and then she GIVES the mic to Patti. Obviously it was all planned, and obviously Diana knew how Patti sings, so if she didn't want Patti to sing like that, then she wouldn't have given the mic to Patti at all.
There were two things that stood out in this video to me. (1) As Patti approached dianna, Dianna took steps back fromm Patti, as if she was running from her. (2) the lady in the orangish colored dress next to patti made some sort of strange face at Patti as Patti was finishing up her part as if she wished Patti would shut up. Envy is obvious

Diana has a super, wonderful voice admired around the globe, and is a much bigger star than all her contemporary's for good reason. Patti is great in her on right, but the two singers are inherently different vocalists. This performance, ironically is a very good example of how well both women can sing. I'm just glad Diana sang the start and Patti sang the chorus. It would not have worked nearly as well the other way around.

I was at this show,backstage for the entire day...through rehearsals and the whole deal...spent with Diane,in her winnebago...and after the taping i went with Diane to the after party,and she wasn't (in the LEAST) either 'upset' or 'put out' about Patti's performance,in fact quite the opposite!!She loves Patti AND Patti's talent!!The ONLY person that i got a jarring vibe from was Luther (who i knew previously) and that had nothing to do with this show!!Turned out to be a great day and night!!

From what I can remember from that time, DR was performing in Vegas that night and was flown in. She wasn't prepared because of that--which is why she asked for help when she handed Patti the mic. What she does, she does better than anybody. Patti, on the other hand, is a gospel singer who can blow the roof off any venue--and she illustrated this here. How silly to say Patti could snatch any mike from Miss Ross, There is a reason Diana was saved for last and was given such an intro, She was by far the biggest star on that stage then, She sang the song beautifully with the poise and glamour that she is famous for, I love Patti but she just started screaming and hollering at the mike, and the words and message are the important part of any song, and i dont remember her SINGING any actual words. There were two things that stood out in this video to me. (1) As Patti approached dianna, Dianna took steps back fromm Patti, as if she was running from her. (2) the lady in the orangish colored dress next to patti made some sort of strange face at Patti as Patti was finishing up her part as if she wished Patti would shut up. Envy is obvious

Sorry but Diana does not have the pipes in comparison to Patti, or any other sister vocalist, and she made to many enemies along the way with her arrogance and nastiness towards other people. Patti on the other hand, is kind, gracious and charming and shows respect to her fans and to others because I met her and she was just so kind.

Diana has a super, wonderful voice admired around the globe, and is a much bigger star than all her contemporary's for good reason. Patti is great in her on right, but the two singers are inherently different vocalists. This performance, ironically is a very good example of how well both women can sing. I'm just glad Diana sang the start and Patti sang the chorus. It would not have worked nearly as well the other way around.

I was at this show,backstage for the entire day...through rehearsals and the whole deal...spent with Diane,in her winnebago...and after the taping i went with Diane to the after party,and she wasn't (in the LEAST) either 'upset' or 'put out' about Patti's performance,in fact quite the opposite!!She loves Patti AND Patti's talent!!The ONLY person that i got a jarring vibe from was Luther (who i knew previously) and that had nothing to do with this show!!Turned out to be a great day and night!!

@ramsdenrik My friend Gina ('Boy George') performed at this event (he sang a duet with Stevie Wonder and Luther)I sat with Diane watching rehearsals for the entire show,then sat with her and her family in her winnebago til she performed,then me and her went to the after party,which was held in a tent across from the Apollo!!There are loads of pictures of me at this event as well!!I don't need to lie...the truth is fascinating enough!!Love Em,x...

@ramsdenrik I think you are correct. She was performing elsewhere and I think it was Atlantic City. She even states during the begining of her performance that she had traveled from another location to be there that evening.

@ramsdenrik Marilyn was there and what he is saying is true--I saw him and George. And yes Diana was flown in "at the last minute" but so what? From what I can remember from that time, DR was performing in Vegas that night and was flown in. She wasn't prepared because of that--which is why she asked for help when she handed Patti the mic. I love a good bitch fight as much as the next guy, but this wasn't one of them.

@ramsdenrik No...she didn't fly in!!She was there with Rhonda Chutney and Traci!!Ah was there with George ('Boy') who sang two duets,one with Stevie and one with Lootah...only the 'big' names had winnebago's...and ah was standing along side one of them,when a security guard came up to meh and said "Miss Ross would like to see you",so ah followed him into one of the winnebago's,and there was DiAnne & family!!Watched rehersals with her all day and went to aftershow party with her,just meh & her.

In fact, if you listen to her opening statement she asks if everyone had a great time and that she travelled a long way and that she was happy to be there.

@TheMrMarilyn I was there too, Marilyn (say hi to George). This whole feud between Patti and Diana was manufactured in the press. Diana is a pop singer with a record that needs no explanation. What she does, she does better than anybody. Patti, on the other hand, is a gospel singer who can blow the roof off any venue--and she illustrated this here. I don't know why people pit singers who are great at what they do against each other.

@TheMrMarilyn The weirdest thing is that I've known Nona Hendryx and, to a lesser extent, Patti , for years, and I've never heard either one slag off Diana Ross. There was a rivalry in the early days (60's) between the Supremes and the Bluebelles, but good lord that was so long ago. People grow up and acknowledge each others' talents. I wonder how many people, after watching this clip, noticed that DR handed Patti the mic, after asking for help?

@reyrey031068 I'm trying to understand how you can call yourself a "Patti Fan of sorts" and then in the next breath say that fantastic instrument she has for a voice is "screaming". Brother or sister you obviously know nothing about real true powerful soul music. But what most people don't know. You can see that there is a pause in this video very clearly, that it was edited for tv. Not you, ramsdenrik, but the original airing channel edited this. The reason for that is that Diana was so scared to give Mama Patti the mic, rightly so, that Patti took it and Diana grabbed it back. 1:44 you canhear the pause. After Patti killed Diana took it back once again, that is why we see Patti looking for a mic. That darn Diana

How silly to say Patti could snatch any mike from Miss Ross, There is a reason Diana was saved for last and was given such an intro, She was by far the biggest star on that stage then, She sang the song beautifully with the poise and glamour that she is famous for, I love Patti but she just started screaming and hollering at the mike, and the words and message are the important part of any song, and i dont remember her SINGING any actual words. She sings quite a few words if you open ur lug holes there is a difference between what Patti does and Screaming, its called betling screaming would have no muscial sound whatsoever, no one started on El Debarge when he did the same thing straight after, as Patti said in an interview it wasn't her key so she sang in a key she was comfertable with ;-) LOL

You can plainly see that not only did Diana politely hadn over the mic..but she was enjoying the moment, lsitening to Patti blow the roof off just like the rest of us. I watched this show from beginning to end and it was clear to EVRYBODY, Diana included that it was definitley Patti's night. I think Diana was a class act for sharing the mic..and Patti took it on home as usual.

All I saw was them playing a little cat & mouse...but it never seemed contentious or anything. The mood just wasnt about all the diva bullshit that folks claim. That nite was all LOVE.
