Great movie...whether or not you are Mormon or not! I am not a Mormon..but the message is clear and good for everyone!!! We need to value more than outward apperances....we need to lift people not tear down! This movie being so old is funny to watch but the message is clear! My husband thinks I am a 10 cow wife! How blessed am I!
@Trillidotia Amazing what bias does to one's ability to have clear perspective, as is likely your case. Imagine this scenario. You're in high school. There's a girl that's being torn down by the popular kids in school and her father. What do you do? I know. By your logic, you wouldn't do anything because she needs to find her independence and join Hilary Clinton. The message that someone neutral would see is that we need to look out for and value those who are downtrodden. Shame you missed that
I have been a Mormon all my life and yet I never heard of this movie until now...and it`s awesome! I don`t see anything of LDS doctrine in this movie though
Nice movies....good job for putting up here. I like this kind of true love movies where the people looks more simple. This type of culture for giving cows in exchange for marrying their daughters still exist in "kampung" area for the natives.

I love Johnny Lingo. So true that it is hard for a woman (or any person for that manner) to feel that they are of worth when they are constantly told they are worth nothing!
I just read that The Legend of Johnny Lingo was a spin off from this!! OMG I love the new one (2002) & watched it like 20 x's, yet didnt know this original existed...Im so glad I found this, lol!!! Thank U! Thank U! Thank U!
I never understood the point of this movie. even as a kid I knew there were many things wrong with the themes and the message seemed like a backhanded compliment.
Whats that one short film called where some dude gets stranded in the desert, takes a short cut and finds himself in some wild west ghost town and has to make a decision between beer or a water well???
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! Haha, I haven't seen it in quite some time. Thanks for uploading it, dude! I just watched this earlier today, epic, "Mohana's face will crack the glass!" "She has a face like a stone and looks as if she has missed - too many meals!" Tulio is amazing, lol.
This classic is second only to the original First Vision movie, but admittedly I enjoyed Johnny Lingo better. A fun and very wise movie, which I saw in the 8th grade (1979), in English class. Didn't know it was a church film until a year or two later (I was a recent convert) when we saw it in Seminary. (Does anyone remember seeing Cipher in the Snow, a late 60s/early 70s film? I saw that too at school, and is also a church film.)
Oh my goodness. We saw this in Guidance class in Grade 7. Almost everyone else seemed to think Johnny Lingo was really great because he insisted on paying 10 cows for his bride instead of 2. Looking back, I think the teacher was trying to introduce us to ethics and morality but I think we were a bit too young to understand! It's interesting to be able to see this again as an adult. Thanks for posting this.
This brings back memories of growing up Mormon in Utah. No one really found this offensive when we watched this in high school. I always wondered why I felt so out of place as one of the only asians in my highschool.
The movie was filmed in Laie, Hawaii. First scene with the rock is, i believe, pounders beach. When the boy sees the boat landing at the shore it looks exactly like Kakela beach in Ha'aula (the beach campground that the church used to own). I think that most of the other scenes were filmed near or behind the BYU campus in Laie.
I grew up there. All the local kids had the movie memorized. One of the towns people was my old piano teacher. Everybody knows Moke, Joe Aquin, the great singer.

Missionaries came to my house today. I offered them some marijuana, they offered to make me breakfast??? I did not know the missionaries were the gays.
I put this movie up for people to watch not you people to hate on some ones religion. Please go argue somewhere else. Send each other PMs don't do it on the comment section.
@tdj65 nothing funny about this movie. Doweries were around for years, except in the ignorant nations, the girl's family pays dowery while in nations that value women, it is the groom's family that pays the dowery. and people were not idiots to spend tons of money on a wedding and put themselves in debt like they do in current cultures.
Rewarding her with 8 cows was symbollic of his love for her or to make her believe that she was worth much more than what everyone else thinks. It's true that what was more important was what she thought of herself because everyone thinks less of her. So the amount of cows is like how much are you worth in money. In this case, Mahana was worth a lot in Johnny's eyes, only it was to make Mahana believe that she is... just so that she can be happy. :)
i can't believe you people have such a hard time understanding the meaning of this...it's not about making women look like she is worth some cows unfortunately this is how it was and still is in some parts of the world people are cruel like that not precisely mormons just poeple. the message was that mahana was worth so much more for how she was and if it took johnny to spend much more for her for stupid people to see that, that he would, beauty should not be rewarded, the person's heart should.
OH MY GOODNESS! I first saw this video randomly in a home ec class, and my family have been quoting it ("I pay eight cow for Mahana") ever since! I'm so glad I found this!
This movie is one of my all time favorites. Johnny Lingo invests in his wife at 8 cows but by the end of the movie she is worth 10 that is a 20 percent return on investment.
The Worth Of Souls Is Great! But Eight Cows Is Way Too Much. Maybe Eight Chickens.
