IIRC March 31st 1983. I have got this edition and but it cuts out during the number 1 song and but New Order performed this for the first time on TOTP and i had a major guess it would be their very first TOTP appearence.

But it re-entered the charts in October 1983 and the performance was re-shown with a new caption and it stayed in the charts for 38 weeks according to my British Hit Singles book.

The voice is from Radioactivity by Kraftwerk and was sampled into an Emulator 1 Sampler (The Synth you've asked about). New Order had to pay Kraftwerk 2 Pence for every record sold as they took the sample from their album without asking for their permission first. If you listen to Radioactivity you can hear the choir at the beginning. Bet they were gutted!

They don't like this song because people ask for it all the time. Playing it live nowadays is fine, but in the early '80s, the machines would often misbehave so that's why they say it's hard. It's not the playing itself, it's to make the machine sound like in the studio.

I'm guessing that dates to around the first release of the song because Bernard hasn't quite mastered the flat 'robot' voice yet and it does sound a little Joy Division. One of the few early performances I've seen and a good one.
