Autobahn i was on it in europe and witnessed a car crash and it was from the tour bus. also i read about this song-somebody ...was this a top 40 hit? also what 10 incher did they release that was chucked out in the middle of the street when i was a child in the 1980's?
longest album version of a top 40 hit-now where is the edited 45 rpm?
Awesome track, who cares how old it is, I was 12 when this was released and my dad came home with this record, there simply was nothing like it at the time ... he had these amazing Kef speakers which could shake the windows from this track and I used to lay next to them for a bass fix lol
Needless to say I have the album in vinyl and was the first CD I even bought, I had to import it from Germany too, for you oldies of course the vinyl sounds a lot better on a good deck :D
Saw these guys at the Paramount in Seattle in '74. They have to be the inventors of "the wall of sound" concept! I felt that concert in my chest for about 2 days after!
When people bring up there age when they mention music from the past, i never hear people say stuff like, im in grade 4 and i listen to mozart...........and another thing, its always the same bands younger people mention, the beatles, the stones, the doors, pink floyd, and of zeppelin......heyy kid, whats ur fav song from each of the bands you mentioned
Have always loved this track. It has to be played on a good hi-fi quite loud in the dark with your eyes shut, what am I doing now? Im actually listening to it through some good ole fashioned Sennheisers :) absolutely brilliant many thanks.
@TruckRacingNut Try driving this through a classic 4 channel receiver (vis a vis Sansui QRX-6500) into a set of Wharfdale E Series speakers. Enough to make you pee yourself in ectasy. Seriously, listened to this while blasting down I-80 across the Salt Lake Flats in Utah. Speeding ticket waiting to happen. In the day of the dreaded 55 speed limit. In a Porsche 914/6. And yes, I was committing hebicide.
@Farmlandsfallfan Well, perhaps not crap, Ill take that back. To be honest I found them a bit too 'poppy' for my liking. Nowhere near as good as Autobahn.
Kraftwerk are brilliant. They're a really nice bunch of guys too. I remember when they took me to see The Three Amigos at the cinema. They paid for the ticket, 7up and the popcorn. They're a really nice, genuine bunch of German blokes.
I say in general "Autobahn" is Kraftwerk's greatest achievement from them. I just love how there's more melodic structures than their first three albums altogether.
There are echoes of this piece in nearly every synthesizer composition I create. I also loved early Tomita and Larry Fast (Synergy) and learned from them. But this is the piece that planted the seed. This is the one that not only sounded new, but actually went someplace new. This wasn't "switched-on old music." This was "future music."
@Aejotz I had a thought for a video-take Holst the Planets, Mars the Bringer of War and show B&W clips of 20th century warfare with the final crescendo showing the Hiroshima A-Bomb. Then start up with Tomita's Mars the Bringer of War showing cold war clips of the modern weapons-jets, submarines, ICBM's then leading into future war concepts. Just a thought.
There is a beautiful scene in 'Control', the 2007 movie about the life and death of Ian Curtis when snippets of Autobahn are played. Joy Division are going on tour and Curtis is falling for a black haired Belgian rock journalist who offers an escape from dreary northern England
A 20th century classic. It has aged well, in that it doesn't sound "modern", but you can tell how other great electronica bands have listened and learned from this masterful piece. That middle flutey bit is so 70s library music for schools (UK style).. You can tell the Ghostbox bands have tuned in! Wonderful! Only thing, the closest we have to proper autobahnen in the UK is the M4 as it passes Heston Services. Not quite the same music/road ethic :-)
I'm a kid. I don't listen to the pure crap that everyone listens today. I listen to: Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and principally, KRAFTWERK, that I hear since when I was 4 year old. I'm the only guy of my SCHOOL that listens a lot of classic songs.
It's great that your listening to classic music but I highly doubt your the only guy in your school that listens to it. Your probably making assumptions because a good majority don't dress or act like they listen to classic songs.
@HaloSpice I'm Not Even Sure That I'm The Only One. I Have A Proof. When They Drop Rock Music In My School Radio, Everyone Says That It's Bad. They Drop "Moves Like Jagger", "I Gotta Feeling" And Other Stuff Everyone Go And Start Cheering. A REAL Radio Show Is When You Play Unknown Music, Not Music That You Hear All The Time.
Sure, those bands (Kraftwerk, Neu, Can, Faust) were amazing but there are other German bands that were as good if not better! = Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Temple, Klaus Schulze, Amon Duul II, Harmonia, Guru Guru, etc.
Another German band that was ahead of the curve was Necronomicon. Check out "Tips zum Selbstmord" from 1972
Any German should be rightly proud of this. Like much of Kraftwerk's output, it conveys a sense of Germanic pride and identity that isn't encumbered by racist, totalitarian baggage. The vision is one of optimism and confidence on the part of a culture that has learned from its past mistakes and is reinventing itself in a modern hi tech world

@ik127 Brings back memories of the eight-track tapes back in the mid 70s and early 80s. I’m still blown away with this recording. Fantastic piece. Thanks for posting! SHAME.. my wife is 100% Kraut and doesn’t appreciate this piece of music…YET! The Germans had excellent recordings in those days. I guess you have to put on a pair of headphones and turn it up to enjoy this type of music… like in the 70s..
Thank you so much for posting the full 1974 version, it's hard to find it. You've made a great contribution to YouTube. I love this sound...it's so cheerful yet calming at times.

My 78 rpm Autobahn went on a trip long ago and left me "thumbing". Thanks for the ride.

You might want to correct your description. It says the song was released in 1947, lol.
