This song has nothing to do with Subdivisions, save for the synth tone used on the 'lead' toward the end is the same one used during the interlude at the end of each chorus on Subdivisions.
Regardless, this is quite the collaborative period for these guys, between this and Battlescar with Max Webster!
All the classic Alex stuff...heavy chorusing on his tone, his use of suspended chords which would figure heavily on Signals and especially Grace Under Pressure. Awesome!!
I wonder if anyone realizes that Rush did most of the instrumental stuff when they say "This sounds like crap!!", The only difference is that Geddy isn't the singer (nor perhaps the bassist?), but you can tell it's Geddy doing the background vocals at 2:00. So don't disrespect the music! The lyrics are indeed cheesy and the singer doesn't fit into what is basically an unreleased Rush track, but I believe that overall this is still a good song..
ah ya bunch of whiners....jesus, ya think God just crapped a smelly turd. Listen to the music, it's great Rush instrumental work as usual. The ONLY problem is it's not Geddy!
This is the most terrible video ive heard. And to put Rush in the backround on the video is VERY disturbing. To have music like this and having RUSH featured in the video is a sin. The singer is terrible, the band- well, not to bad.
@TheDW12pc since it is the members of RUSH playing on this then it is quite natural to have the images of the band on the video. view all the commments on here & check about the history of the track - written by Jack Secret ( check a rush album cover for who he is)

Its cute seeing the pretend Rush fans flaming this tune. Its Rush you fools. Geddy isn't singing, thats all. Hahaha. Pretentious know it all newbies don't know shit about Rush.
@slump75 Could you explain me more about this tune ? How is it that they invited a singer for a song which hasn´t ever been published on any of their studio albums ? In what year was this released ? The keyboard playing and drums sound similar to the recordings on Signals.
The user should explain more on the info box I guess.
Aprox 1980, it was just before Signals came out and was the first song they began to work on from the album, it would later become Subdivisions. As for the Singer don't know but Geddy wasn't there when this song was being worked on initially.
I always have really loved Rush in the mid 70's to the early 80's, so this sounding to me ,fits that 80's era. Sure, it isn't Rush completely but fun to hear something from that time anyway! Takes me back to high school when everyone knew them and loved them.
Hey Ratchetfan2007, please include this in the description. I will explain more to these folks who are flaming about this tune.
"I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating
an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio."
Don't kill the messenger, but being a RUSH fan, as I have for a few DECADES now, this just doesn't have the same kick of old. It's not bad, but it's not up to the level of greatness these guys are capable of... I still vote thumbs up but this song won't make my "rotation " or top song(s) list , I am afraid to say.
though very power synth(80's rush or anything else) it's not Rush without Geddy's tea kettle voice.(mellowed in '80's it was) sounds like Parson's Project, and they are as good as APP!
This is cool. It's like discovering a hidden track from the Signals CD. The instruments, and their style of playing sound like a glimpse of that period for them. It almost reminds me of a Max Webster collaboration. Thanks for sharing!
what was this from? ALSO interesting down here in SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA, we used to have radio stations that would have a DJ named GREG STONE and he would do "Stone Trek" on the radio, playing music by RUSH ASSOCIATE a band named "FM". Wish I had that on tape, it was awesome!!!
"I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. It's not really a "Rush Song" It's a Jack Secret song, Geddy and Alex helped out with keys and rhythm guitars. Neil played drums for all of Jack's/Tony's tracks.
It's really hard to sit and hear this guy sing, instead of Geddy. Still, the music is clearly rush. Listen from 2:55 through 3:21and tell me it's not Rush. Of course it is. Just like the Battlescar song they did with Max Webster's group. A true Rush nut like me still wants this in their collection.
Jack Secret = Tony Geranios....long time keyboard and guitar tech for Rush. He's a great guy....he took the time to talk to me and my friends before the Austin show on the 1988 HYF tour. We must have talked for hours it seems. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. He could have had his pick of groupies in the back of the bus but he chose to talk about Rush with a bunch of teenage Rush fans. Good musician too. I think he said he had a history with Blue Oyster Cult as well.....not sure though.
This song was just made up out of boredom. The singer is somebody that was a part of their road crew. BTW...The song "Tears" is on their 2112 album. So that's not an unreleased song.
I am a little tripped out. I've been a rush fan my whole life and never knew anything about this track until now. Very Cool!! Does anybody else know about any unreleased tracks or guest appearences?...

What info are you looking for? It is what it is...the long sought after Tough Break...Tony G., Geddy's long standing Keyboard tech verified it and was NOT happy about it making it to the net.
I don't understand why he wouldn't be happy. I doubt he would've made money off it, and I'm pretty sure a LOT of Rush fans dig this track. I know I really like it, it's become a favorite of mine, actually.

bassplyr - actually its RUSH with 2 members of the crew as well. Recorded at Le Studio Morin Heights during September 81 during mix of exit stage left.
Certainly does sound like the Max Websters influence in there. I read somewhere that it's Neil on drums, Geddy on keys & bvs, Alex on his telecaster in the background and the others, Skip and Tony I think, doing vocals, guitar and bass!?!
Jack Secret is a nickname for Tony Geranios (i believe he was Rush's keyboard tech circa Power Windows) Skip Gildersleeve was with Rush's crew for many years. He held many positions over the years. I don't think this song has anything to do with Rush. They did play with Max Webster on the Universal Juveniles lp in 1980, but I'm not sure about this one. I could be wrong.
its Max Webster

Certainly does sound like the Max Websters influence in there. I read somewhere that it's Neil on drums, Geddy on keys & bvs, Alex on his telecaster in the background and the others, Skip and Tony I think, doing vocals, guitar and bass!?!

Is this Max Webster (Canadian band and friends of Rush)? Rush played on their song Battle Scar - I don't think this is Rush but they are great.

That was another song called, "Battle Scars". This guy is Jack Secret and the guy on chorus is Skip Gildersleeve whoever they are.
nesjuggalo 3 years ago
Jack Secret is a nickname for Tony Geranios (i believe he was Rush's keyboard tech circa Power Windows) Skip Gildersleeve was with Rush's crew for many years. He held many positions over the years. I don't think this song has anything to do with Rush. They did play with Max Webster on the Universal Juveniles lp in 1980, but I'm not sure about this one. I could be wrong.

This is a cool song. Interesting to hear Rush back up another singer. I really enjoyed it.
