  • its Max Webster

  • I've been hearing this was turned into Subdivisions, but I just can't hear the parts they used...

  • @undertakerfreak1127 let me suck ur penis

  • Was this during the Signals era (circa '82-'83?)

  • the backing vocals sound quite like subdvisios because this song got turned into subdvisions

    rush rules!

    Thumbs Up If you agree!

  • That is indeed NP on drums, or a very very good imitation of his style. It has the Signals-era sound.

  • I'm a rush meganerd but I've never heard of this, what is it?

  • Parts of the song resemble "Stand or Fall" by The Fixx

  • The synth line at the three quarters of the song is hallucinating. It's actually a good song, just poorly sung.

Man those keyboards textures are floaty. Signals rules!

  • As far as I can remember, the line-up for this song is:

    Jack Secret-vocals and bass

    Alex Lifeson & ??--guitars

    Geddy Lee--keyboards and backing vocals

    Neil Peart--drums

  • the synth sounds like geddy

  • I wonder if anyone realizes that Rush did most of the instrumental stuff when they say "This sounds like crap!!", The only difference is that Geddy isn't the singer (nor perhaps the bassist?), but you can tell it's Geddy doing the background vocals at 2:00. So don't disrespect the music! The lyrics are indeed cheesy and the singer doesn't fit into what is basically an unreleased Rush track, but I believe that overall this is still a good song..

  • ah ya bunch of whiners....jesus, ya think God just crapped a smelly turd. Listen to the music, it's great Rush instrumental work as usual. The ONLY problem is it's not Geddy!

  • @MrTubejockey i agree with ya brother RUSH RULES

  • Guess all the people capping on this could do better.....hey, show me some #'s you have uploaded....Not Rush, but a part of their history.

  • This is the most terrible video ive heard. And to put Rush in the backround on the video is VERY disturbing. To have music like this and having RUSH featured in the video is a sin. The singer is terrible, the band- well, not to bad.

  • @TheDW12pc since it is the members of RUSH playing on this then it is quite natural to have the images of the band on the video. view all the commments on here & check about the history of the track - written by Jack Secret ( check a rush album cover for who he is)

  • I just induced vomiting..

  • Everyone should keep Jack Secret (a secret). This song sounds like crap! It starts out sounding like the police, and not a good sounding police, and ends up sounding like a cheesy bar band at 1:45 in the morning.

  • Mr. Geranios, er...Jack Secret has been nice enough to upload this and other tracks to his Myspace.

Just promise not to laugh too hard at the fact he it's a Myspace.

  • this should of been a song but without the lyrics and with neils lyrics

  • Damn...2:48. Alex looks darkly, dangerously delicious.

  • @MqZane I never said it was the same, simply that it became... note simmilarities around 2:27 (to clarify, definatly not identical, but simmilarity is there) and a few of the cords used in this song are very simmilar to the ones in Subdivisions.

Sorry that there are few to no reliable sources and I don't have a "Signals tour programme"

  • This sucks , and where do you get off calling it RUSH? Call it garbage instead, cuz that's what it is.

  • guitar sounds like the police's andy summers in the beginning

  • Sounds more like Max Webster.

  • this sounds like right in the middle of signals and moving pictures they should of used the song but with geddy and not cheassy 80's lyrics and neils lyrics

  • Which album is this a part of? Can't find this anywhere. Must be an unreleased single.

  • Whoever thinks this is not rush, listen to the guitar. It's Zivojinovich

  • Hey man this is pretty good. All these folks knocking this should appreciate this as a fan.It is just a jam session.Nothing serious.I think it would have made a good side project.

  • lol this is not Rush...

  • I've been waiting to hear this song for decades. Thanks. Pretty cool.

  • this song is fuckin awesome

  • It's a grower... I weren't too sure about it at first but like I said, it's growin on me! Besides, it's good to hear something by them thats away from the norm ;-)

  • I dug this till the singing started

  • Who is this singer. I like it. Is it really RUSH playing and why did they allow this guy to be a frontman

  • Okay, so this is really a Jack Secret song featuring Rush, then, right? It sounds pretty cool, a basic old school rock tune.

  • Its cute seeing the pretend Rush fans flaming this tune. Its Rush you fools. Geddy isn't singing, thats all. Hahaha. Pretentious know it all newbies don't know shit about Rush.

  • @slump75 Thats the problem you gimp. The singer is god awful.

  • Comment removed

  • @slump75 Could you explain me more about this tune ? How is it that they invited a singer for a song which hasn´t ever been published on any of their studio albums ? In what year was this released ? The keyboard playing and drums sound similar to the recordings on Signals.

The user should explain more on the info box I guess.

    Thanks in advance,

    Claudio

  • @Delgift This is all I know about this song

Aprox 1980, it was just before Signals came out and was the first song they began to work on from the album, it would later become Subdivisions. As for the Singer don't know but Geddy wasn't there when this song was being worked on initially.

  • Rush seem to be treating their crew like equals. I'm not surprised. One more thing to like about them.

  • I always have really loved Rush in the mid 70's to the early 80's, so this sounding to me ,fits that 80's era. Sure, it isn't Rush completely but fun to hear something from that time anyway! Takes me back to high school when everyone knew them and loved them.

  • Hey Ratchetfan2007, please include this in the description. I will explain more to these folks who are flaming about this tune.

"I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating

an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio."

    - Neil Peart

  • What the f$&c is this sh&t? Not cool. Dont use Rush pics to promote your crap. Singer is horrible.

  • I'm not entirely sure how this relates to Rush. It's clearly not Geddy Lee singing, and the lyrics don't sound like Neil Peart's writing.

  • Ummm gay lyrics and this is a disgrace to Rush

  • I GOT A FREAKING SIGNED PICK FROM ALEX LIFESON!

  • @Rushguitarist1 I gots signed sticks from Neil.....wanna switch for a few months......=D

  • @dinglenutzz lol..maybe when hell freezes over?

  • @Rushguitarist1 =D....awww comon....just for a few months. Um o ya Hells frozen dude....gimme....=D

  • @dinglenutzz hahahaha no. last time I checked Satan is still hot!

  • OMG instrumentals farrr surpass the vocals on this track IMHO! like wtf this dosen't ring "true" to Rush for on this one..

  • I like the crackle of neils snare on this track. cool track. voice sounds good. a lil like g. therogood.

  • CALL LOCAL ROCK FM RADIO STATIONS REQUEST Rush Song CARAVAN!!!

  • Don't kill the messenger, but being a RUSH fan, as I have for a few DECADES now, this just doesn't have the same kick of old. It's not bad, but it's not up to the level of greatness these guys are capable of... I still vote thumbs up but this song won't make my "rotation " or top song(s) list , I am afraid to say.

  • though very power synth(80's rush or anything else) it's not Rush without Geddy's tea kettle voice.(mellowed in '80's it was) sounds like Parson's Project, and they are as good as APP!

  • The singer is not bad!

Like that part beginning at: 2:45

  • i do really wish i could hear geddy sing this, then it would be a fantastic song. but the instrumental section was really awesome!!!

  • This is cool. It's like discovering a hidden track from the Signals CD. The instruments, and their style of playing sound like a glimpse of that period for them. It almost reminds me of a Max Webster collaboration. Thanks for sharing!

  • @dougyyz Totally has a Max Webster feel doesnt it....

  • who is on what insterments?

  • what was this from? ALSO interesting down here in SAN JOSE CALIFORNIA, we used to have radio stations that would have a DJ named GREG STONE and he would do "Stone Trek" on the radio, playing music by RUSH ASSOCIATE a band named "FM". Wish I had that on tape, it was awesome!!!

  • From Signals tourbook:

"I had been working down in the little studio, cleaning and renovating an old set of Hayman drums that were kicking around, and had started working on a "Jack Secret" song with Jack and Skip from the crew. Geddy and Alex soon joined in on keyboards and rhythm guitar, and we later recorded the song ("Tough Break") up in the studio. "

  • Really nice song. Must be a Rush fan like me.

  • When was this recorded and why is this dude on vocals?

  • YEAH~~~

  • this is a kick to Rush's face!!!! Not good at all!!! This is not the trio!

  • GUYS>>>>THS IS NOT GEDDY LEE SINGING!!!!!!! DO YOUR RESEARCH... Obviously it sounds NOTHING like Geddy Lee...because it isn't! Its just them playing, for this unknown singer.

  • @pjammana The singer was Rush's old guitar and keyboard tech Tony Geranios

  • Being a Rather "older" Rush fan, I never knew all this info existed. Thanks ratchetfan2007 for the enlightenment.

  • Geddy's voice truly make's the signature sound for Rush. This song could be any other of a million bands out there.

  • You know, Anthem should include this track on re-issues of Signals, or 'Best Of' compilations (for mere flavour)...I read of this song's rumoured existence in the 1988 book VISIONS, and am only glad to be able to hear it now...it's quite creative -- I love the trumpet-like synthesizer (a la Tangerine Dream's 'Cyclone' CD)...the unknown singer is a neat contrast to Lee's airy, banshee-like delivery...the 'macho' lyrics are also unlike most Rush topics; this is 'Bad Company' territory, usually.

  • perhaps pete best, annette peacock, wangeaux tangeaux, john rutsey, billy preston, Pride of Prattville piccolo section. santa claus and pink floyd motherfucker!

  • This is brutal. The "booooiiiiing" effect from the guitar even adds to the comedy.

  • Signals production

  • I think his vocals are pretty damned good myself..This could have been a good side project for the guys.

  • These lyrics are horrible. Total Cheese. LOL

  • great pics. its hard to believe sometimes that Rush is still making music and touring!

  • Why is this guy singing? Did the want to add a singer or something?

  • This is weird... not a bad song, but I miss Geddy's wailing...

  • It's not really a "Rush Song" It's a Jack Secret song, Geddy and Alex helped out with keys and rhythm guitars. Neil played drums for all of Jack's/Tony's tracks.

  • who played bass?

  • Tony Geranios

  • SAME HERE!!

  • It's really hard to sit and hear this guy sing, instead of Geddy. Still, the music is clearly rush. Listen from 2:55 through 3:21and tell me it's not Rush. Of course it is. Just like the Battlescar song they did with Max Webster's group. A true Rush nut like me still wants this in their collection.

  • ruthylopez

also to add to the collection would be the novelty single Geddy did for the great white north - called take off

I believe this track is the one mentioned in the Signals tour book - a track recorded September 1981 during the mixing of stage left

  • Jack Secret = Tony Geranios....long time keyboard and guitar tech for Rush. He's a great guy....he took the time to talk to me and my friends before the Austin show on the 1988 HYF tour. We must have talked for hours it seems. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. He could have had his pick of groupies in the back of the bus but he chose to talk about Rush with a bunch of teenage Rush fans. Good musician too. I think he said he had a history with Blue Oyster Cult as well.....not sure though.

  • Yeah -Jack actually recorded on one of the BOC albums- and yeah;Really cool dude; He sent me a Rush poster from the R30 tour in Germany

  • Not bad , first time listing to it been a fan for 20yrs

  • Would of liked it more if Geddy sang it, i don't care for Jack Secrets vocals, but hes not bad

  • For some reason, I dig this song. Yes, its not one of their best but its intresting and the synthwork and background vocals are pretty neat.

  • This song was just made up out of boredom. The singer is somebody that was a part of their road crew. BTW...The song "Tears" is on their 2112 album. So that's not an unreleased song.

  • yea there a song called tears

    btw who's singing this

  • I am a little tripped out. I've been a rush fan my whole life and never knew anything about this track until now. Very Cool!! Does anybody else know about any unreleased tracks or guest appearences?...

  • I'm with youon this... I've been a fan for over 20 years, I thought I owned everything RUSH has recorded; but I haven't heard this one! (even though technically it's not "Rush".) I dig it!

  • Reminds me of Rush and Max Webster stuff:)

  • I also really like the picture at 3:20. A RARE shot indeed: Geddy Lee circa late 70's or very early 80's and with a Fender, not a Rickenbacker!

  • during Moving Pictures

  • i like his jazz but he never should have stopped using the rickenbacker it always sounded much cooler

  • Just in case you didn't know...that shot is in the Moving Pictures album jacket sleeve

  • Ahhh thanks :)

  • It's straight from the Moving Pictures album booklet... Not very rare

  • What the hell is the picture at 1:01 ?? :O

  • And the one in the desert at 2:00 . Wtf?

  • The first is a picture of the boys with afros on the Presto tour (think I got it from MitA) and the second one is from the Presto tourbook, I believe..

  • I hate to correct the person who uploaded this video, but if you pause the video and look at Neil's bass drum, its from the Roll the Bones tour or rehearsal

  • and I'm referring to the picture at 1:01

  • Just wondering, what's MitA?

  • Who WROTE this song????

  • this is not Rush song. what happen here?????

  • the guy singing is geddy's guitar tech

  • thish shouldda been like a bonus track on signals or somethin. sounds like subdivision's long lost brother.

  • I can see why this was not released... but kinda funny to hear though.

  • geez, that was awesome, i would get it on my ipod, but they don't have it on itunes :-(

  • sounds signalesque

  • It's OK. Everything sounds like Rush except the vocals, it just isn't as good. Needs more Weinrib.

  • Comment removed

  • @gravultrabasser I agree. And it sounds very Signals actually. Maybe GUP.

  • @gravultrabasser I would proudly wear a t-shirt that says, "Needs More Weinrib".

  • Should've left it where ever you found it. Blah.

  • maybe the band "FM", any more info???

  • What info are you looking for? It is what it is...the long sought after Tough Break...Tony G., Geddy's long standing Keyboard tech verified it and was NOT happy about it making it to the net.

  • I don't understand why he wouldn't be happy. I doubt he would've made money off it, and I'm pretty sure a LOT of Rush fans dig this track. I know I really like it, it's become a favorite of mine, actually.

His music is currently giving people pleasure. I don't see that as a bad thing. I didn't hear the verification though, so I'm not entirely sure if there's another reason.

  • Tony - Bass and Vocals

    Skip - Lead Guitar

    Alex - Rhythm guitar

Geddy - Keys and Backing Vocals

    Neil - Drums

  • i think this is something else they did with battle scar. Max webster RIP lol...

  • bassplyr - actually its RUSH with 2 members of the crew as well. Recorded at Le Studio Morin Heights during September 81 during mix of exit stage left.

  • rush would cane this divvy nonsense....

  • Certainly does sound like the Max Websters influence in there. I read somewhere that it's Neil on drums, Geddy on keys & bvs, Alex on his telecaster in the background and the others, Skip and Tony I think, doing vocals, guitar and bass!?!

  • hold the heineken bottle proudly high in hand, smokem if ya gottem

  • it's Max Webster or Kim Mitchell.Gotta be (A).

    What happened to Liam Birt?

  • Is this Max Webster (Canadian band and friends of Rush)? Rush played on their song Battle Scar - I don't think this is Rush but they are great.

  • The vocalist sounds a bit like Thin Lizzy's singer?I don't know,jus'guessing????

  • was this on an album?

  • I like this, but it doesn't exactly feel like Rush without Ged's vocals

  • god i love that growl of the ric

  • i like how half these pictures are from the

    '07 calendar of rush :P

  • Reminds me a little of Rainbow, post Dio.

  • not bad at all

i actually quite like this song

  • this shows rush would suck without geddy on vocals

  • lol, definitely

  • This is not a bad song but ye without Geddy its not the same

  • is that max webster?

  • That was another song called, "Battle Scars". This guy is Jack Secret and the guy on chorus is Skip Gildersleeve whoever they are.

  • Jack Secret is a nickname for Tony Geranios (i believe he was Rush's keyboard tech circa Power Windows) Skip Gildersleeve was with Rush's crew for many years. He held many positions over the years. I don't think this song has anything to do with Rush. They did play with Max Webster on the Universal Juveniles lp in 1980, but I'm not sure about this one. I could be wrong.

  • ohh man i have that song...from 1977 right? I think that song is pretty damn awesome.

  • It's from 1981.

  • is this a fkin cover?

  • It was ok.

  • Really? Rush backed up another singer? When was this?? Sounds kind of mid 80's. Was it really 1984?

  • recorded in 1981

  • This is a cool song. Interesting to hear Rush back up another singer. I really enjoyed it.
