How to Install & Format a Micro SD Card on a Samsung Galaxy S2 / Android Smartphone

I have a 16 GB micro SD. It's recently somehow become corrupt and my computer won't read it, nor will my Galaxy S II. I tried "format SD card" from phone options but it didn't do anything. Can you help me?

Also, I click "mount SD card" and it says "Preparing SD card" but then it stops and nothing happens.

What difference is there by formatting the sd card, and, err... Not?

@shmav52 if you don't format it then the phone may not recognise the format as its come stright form the manufacturer, its a bit like when you get a computer hard drive you can't just buy one install it and expect it to work you have to format it so that the computer can understand its language

i bought a 32gb sd card, but when i put it in the phone, and go to sd card settings, it shows that i have only 11gb total space, with 581mb space remaining. what am i missing? thanks in advance.
