Steve Martin is so much more than just a comedian!! His interests are vast. He's a musician and composer, author, actor, playwright, producer, ect.....Steve Martin is a genius. It's not all about the comedy with this man, he's multifaceted.
Sadly, I think it comes down to making decisions (i.e., movie choices) based on maintaining a certain lifestyle. Obviously, it's no crime, but when you think how funny Steve Martin could once be, it's sad.
Probably an even better example of "selling out" a career like this is Eddie Murphy. I've no doubt there are now generations of people who only know him as that actor from those (mostly) crappy movies.......little realizing how 'edgy' and outrageously funny he once was...
i thought wossy was simply naturally quick and hilarious, but he must have grown into it somewhat because he was merely a lame extra in this interview, which steve martin could have conducted all by himself!
'Roxanne' is the only Martin comedy I like better than 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles', so I'm happy! My favorite non-comedy on 'The Spanish Prisoner'. Where's the interview for that one?
shame we don't see more of steve on the big screen. he was hysterical in dirty rotten scoundrels. now he only makes me smile - but that's not a bad thing nowadays i guess. and wossy; he's always been a wannabe letterman. but he's really more of a conan ie inane. parky was best because he listened, asked the right q's and was never intimidated. check out his interview with ali as a good eg. . and bear in mind ali was parky's hero.
Ross is SO, out of his league here - like a giggling schoolgirl who is totally awe-struck by Martin's god-like, comedy greatness. He doesn't know what to do and is peeing in his pants with ineptitude. The trouble with Ross is he's always been a Letterman wannabe, but unlike his hero, has never been able to hold his own against the greats. It's a shame that when he finally grew some comedy balls, his chosen brand lacked true wit and creativity, unlike that of his heros. A bit of a shame, really.
A BIT harsh, don't ya think? I'm sure anyone in that era would have a hard time keeping up with Steve Martin in his prime. Especially considering how young Ross was in this interview.
I've seen letterman flustered with guest before, like there have been guests on letterman's show who just completely either taken over or just confused the hell out of dave
Not sure people commenting realize that this 'smug Steve Martin' was a character he -played- during his stand-up show. Ricky Gervais does a similar sort of thing today. Fairly easy to grasp people!!!
at 5:35 ross points out that martin had used the "long face" joke in the movie. i think steve made up that anecdote about the guy in the bar just to work the crowd. he looks like he wants to punch ross when he points that out.
It is really interesting to see an interview intended to promote Roxanne before it became the monster success that it did. It was in that period when everyone had video players but the internet hadn't been invented yet. I think everyone between the age of 16 and 25 probably saw it a dozen times.
Steve Martin is a comedic genius who revolutionized comedy! He is a man who wrote for the legendary Smothers Brothers comedy hour and snl for years, wrote ORIGINAL jokes and books and plays and im sure he could care less about this interview. AND IN IT, HE'S FUNNY
Also with regard the shitty movies Steve Martin's done - I think John Cleese might be right when he said he suspected he did them to get money to fund his art collection. He's shown in his career he's capable of amazing highs and despite what people think his humour isn't at someone else's expense - I think he expected Jonathan Ross to cotton on a bit more to his thread - he's used to Letterman and people like that. Ross seemed like he was at the end of a long day, like a tired kid!
I think that if you find Steve Martin smug it's because this is kind of a spin-off of his stage persona when he did stand-up, which was a deliberately obnoxious and self-obsessed character. It's supposed to be based on the idea that 'we all know what's going on'. Probably Jonathan Ross was a bit hungry..!? I don't think he's on coke - it's just his sense of humour. From the moment he comes on he's trying to entertain the audience and he does it all the way to the end.

Steve was obviously PO'ed at something right from the start of the interview. My guess is, it has something to do with his remark about wanting things to take 3-4 hours.
"I remember this as being just about the funniest interview I'd ever seen. Then I watched it just now for the first time in 22 years and found it really dull and smug."
Ya know, you may be right. Maybe it's time we all sat down and really thought about this comedy thing.
Jonathan Ross should now be forced to watch this clip repeatedly, a) just to see how totally inadequate he was when confronted with an edgy charismatic star (and still is when the star's not his mate), and b) to remember the days before his fame and ego got out of control. He's way out of his depth with a superbly on form Steve Martin (before he himself sadly went into terminal decline.)
I remember this as being just about the funniest interview I'd ever seen. Then I watched it just now for the first time in 22 years and found it really dull and smug.
Holy crap! I've never seen a talk show where the guest sat RIGHT of the desk. Carson, Leno, Letterman, Conan, foreign guy on CBS following Letterman....all RIGHT of the desk. So is this the way it is on the OTHER side of the Atlantic? Is it like Alice through the Looking Glass where everything is on the opposite side? I mean they drive on the opposite side of the road and their zipper pulls are on the opposite side of the fly.
@CokeMachineGlo Larry King is an interview show, not a talk show. Talk shows have an audience and usually a band. Actually Carson Daly had this layout but failed and turned it into an interview show instead.
@ExtremeBogom It is the way nature intended. It would be like asking why the sun must rise in the morning or why salmon must swim up stream to spawn. Sure I could lay out all the scientific proof to support my statement relating to right brain versus left brain activity, the counter-clockwise turn of the earth combined with its orbital path, the standardized layout of a television sound stage, camera tracking as well as psychological & physiological reasons, but ultimately its the web of life.

Ross the sycophant as ever - he get's all starry eyed when big names from Hollywood (still does today, his interview with Martin Scorcese was embarrassing) appear on his shows and the interviews are inevitably compromised as a result.
Interesting to note Steve Martin ironically state 'Failure' from here on in - he fulfilled his own prophecy.
