  • Jeez Ross was struggling, he really has trouble with comedy.

  • Jonathan Ross would destroy him in his current form!

  • Is it weird that i'm 16 and am in love with Steve Martin lol

  • @siggie999

OMG -- no. Just imagine if you were in love with Steve Martin and you were 16 (!)

  • Steve Martin is so much more than just a comedian!! His interests are vast. He's a musician and composer, author, actor, playwright, producer, ect.....Steve Martin is a genius. It's not all about the comedy with this man, he's multifaceted.

  • I have never seen Steve Martin act so sarcastic toward a TV Talk show host before. Steve ran intellectual circles around Jonathan Ross.

  • He had light hair before? Ross, that is? Wow.

  • its funny how the dude kept interrupting steve for some dumb remarks

  • Steve was still funny then.

    What happened?

  • @MonkeyZorr

Sadly, I think it comes down to making decisions (i.e., movie choices) based on maintaining a certain lifestyle. Obviously, it's no crime, but when you think how funny Steve Martin could once be, it's sad.

Probably an even better example of "selling out" a career like this is Eddie Murphy. I've no doubt there are now generations of people who only know him as that actor from those (mostly) crappy movies.......little realizing how 'edgy' and outrageously funny he once was...

  • it's funny how JR seems so awkward and insecure in this interview.. he's come a long way since then

  • Steve Martin looks the same now as then lol

  • i thought wossy was simply naturally quick and hilarious, but he must have grown into it somewhat because he was merely a lame extra in this interview, which steve martin could have conducted all by himself!

  • holy cow! this is old!! jonathon looks so young!

  • I love Steve Martin. He's the best...

  • Steven Martin was so confident there. I suppose it's the sort of gig he had done a million times before. Could do it in his sleep!

  • Steve Martin = Legend!

  • That card trick killed!!!

  • I wish this was about Planes, Trains and Automobiles

  • wow that host sucked. Martin was just dancing around him.

  • 1:56; that's what she said! =P

  • he is funny but sometimes his jokes are so basic, like the dancing queen card. weak

  • @fuckamericanidiot it was supoosted to be so basic thats wh yit waas funny he was makin it ovious that it was a corey joke to be funny

  • @surfitaly ok maybe but i don't find it funny on any level

  • @fuckamericanidiot ok then the joke wasnt for you

  • ross was so thin! x)

  • I've done terrible things to my dog with a fork!

  • "King of Hearts. Come down and dance!"

    *duhduhduhduh*

    Soooo cute lolol

  • Ross and Conan had identical hair cuts back then!

  • shame we don't see more of steve on the big screen. he was hysterical in dirty rotten scoundrels. now he only makes me smile - but that's not a bad thing nowadays i guess. and wossy; he's always been a wannabe letterman. but he's really more of a conan ie inane. parky was best because he listened, asked the right q's and was never intimidated. check out his interview with ali as a good eg. . and bear in mind ali was parky's hero.

  • True that, Steve only makes me smile, but i think he was outstanding in dirty rotten scoundrels. It's probably the

    combinaison with Michael Caine

  • Woss is so young and thin.

    Martin always had white hair?

  • Ross is SO, out of his league here - like a giggling schoolgirl who is totally awe-struck by Martin's god-like, comedy greatness. He doesn't know what to do and is peeing in his pants with ineptitude. The trouble with Ross is he's always been a Letterman wannabe, but unlike his hero, has never been able to hold his own against the greats. It's a shame that when he finally grew some comedy balls, his chosen brand lacked true wit and creativity, unlike that of his heros. A bit of a shame, really.

  • A BIT harsh, don't ya think? I'm sure anyone in that era would have a hard time keeping up with Steve Martin in his prime. Especially considering how young Ross was in this interview.

  • I've seen letterman flustered with guest before, like there have been guests on letterman's show who just completely either taken over or just confused the hell out of dave

  • He's looked 60 years old for over 20 years.

  • jonathan looks so funny

  • hahaha

    ross is so thin!

    XD

  • Not sure people commenting realize that this 'smug Steve Martin' was a character he -played- during his stand-up show. Ricky Gervais does a similar sort of thing today. Fairly easy to grasp people!!!

  • Jonathan is so young! Ha he looks weird lol

  • aha Steve owned this show!

i bet Jonathan's looked back in this interview countless times and took notes

  • at 5:35 ross points out that martin had used the "long face" joke in the movie. i think steve made up that anecdote about the guy in the bar just to work the crowd. he looks like he wants to punch ross when he points that out.

  • It is really interesting to see an interview intended to promote Roxanne before it became the monster success that it did. It was in that period when everyone had video players but the internet hadn't been invented yet. I think everyone between the age of 16 and 25 probably saw it a dozen times.

Also, Jonathon Ross looking so young!!

  • I thought Steve was funny, and rossie was shit.... rossie is hilarious nowadays!

  • Steve Martin is a comedic genius who revolutionized comedy! He is a man who wrote for the legendary Smothers Brothers comedy hour and snl for years, wrote ORIGINAL jokes and books and plays and im sure he could care less about this interview. AND IN IT, HE'S FUNNY

  • Also with regard the shitty movies Steve Martin's done - I think John Cleese might be right when he said he suspected he did them to get money to fund his art collection. He's shown in his career he's capable of amazing highs and despite what people think his humour isn't at someone else's expense - I think he expected Jonathan Ross to cotton on a bit more to his thread - he's used to Letterman and people like that. Ross seemed like he was at the end of a long day, like a tired kid!

  • I think that if you find Steve Martin smug it's because this is kind of a spin-off of his stage persona when he did stand-up, which was a deliberately obnoxious and self-obsessed character. It's supposed to be based on the idea that 'we all know what's going on'. Probably Jonathan Ross was a bit hungry..!? I don't think he's on coke - it's just his sense of humour. From the moment he comes on he's trying to entertain the audience and he does it all the way to the end.

  • "I remember this as being just about the funniest interview I'd ever seen. Then I watched it just now for the first time in 22 years and found it really dull and smug."

Ya know, you may be right. Maybe it's time we all sat down and really thought about this comedy thing.

  • Comment removed

  • Personally i dont think steve was that funny and i think jonathan thought so too.

  • I remember this as being just about the funniest interview I'd ever seen. Then I watched it just now for the first time in 22 years and found it really dull and smug.

  • Wow, you've gotten old and joyless.

  • Possibly, or maybe comedy has moved on and I no longer find cokeheads hilarious.

  • Jonathan is a prick in this one.

  • holy shit Ross is young in this!

  • lol steve martin totally ran rings round jonathan ross, hes a legend lol, jonathan didnt stand a chance

  • Holy crap! I've never seen a talk show where the guest sat RIGHT of the desk. Carson, Leno, Letterman, Conan, foreign guy on CBS following Letterman....all RIGHT of the desk. So is this the way it is on the OTHER side of the Atlantic? Is it like Alice through the Looking Glass where everything is on the opposite side? I mean they drive on the opposite side of the road and their zipper pulls are on the opposite side of the fly.

  • Calm down now.... Here comes Nursey with the trolley.....

  • @Emmaculate21198 is she on the right or the left of the trolley?

  • @Emmaculate21198 yeh thats correct it is that side here. yes, im not sure why, but quite often it is. strange isnt ha ha

  • they've rectified the situation now, it's on the left.

  • @MalubaySyecado It's because he's from england

  • @sxebilly1 No he's not. He was born in Waco, Texas and raised in Southern California.

  • @MalubaySyecado I was talking about Jonathan Ross

  • @sxebilly1 Yes, I know. So was I.

  • @MalubaySyecado Guests are on the left of Larry King.

  • @CokeMachineGlo Larry King is an interview show, not a talk show. Talk shows have an audience and usually a band. Actually Carson Daly had this layout but failed and turned it into an interview show instead.

  • @MalubaySyecado

Actually yes. We tend to like more intimate discussion/conversation.

  • @ExtremeBogom That has nothing to do with sitting on the left versus the right.

  • @MalubaySyecado

    Correct, it doesn't.

But who said anything about left or right? Do you think guests should sit on the audience's left instead? If so, why?

  • @ExtremeBogom It is the way nature intended. It would be like asking why the sun must rise in the morning or why salmon must swim up stream to spawn. Sure I could lay out all the scientific proof to support my statement relating to right brain versus left brain activity, the counter-clockwise turn of the earth combined with its orbital path, the standardized layout of a television sound stage, camera tracking as well as psychological & physiological reasons, but ultimately its the web of life.

  • @MalubaySyecado

That's true. You made me think of the saying "left hand path".

Steve is on the right here...Like the devil xD.

  • "I've dont terrible things to my dog with a fork"

    ahaha. XD

  • The desk is so bare! You'd think they have tried to jazz it up a bit.

  • Ahh yes, the cow pasture shuffle. So good!

  • Steve is made of greatness

the host trembled in fear of it

  • Appears Steve heard Ross dissing him before the show? They're uncomfortable right from the start. Audience is loving it. Ross only laughs when Steve is not telling jokes. Was Steve gonna mention Ross before the end music began?

  • is there a video of ross dissin him? if i ever c ross now his face is gettin smashed in!

  • I feel like i'm missing something.. Like, before this interview took place, there was a heated argument between Ross and Martin.. Cause Jonathan just seems so uncomfortable and frustrated (not THAT surprising!) during it. Steve is hilarious.. But yeah, it's a bit of a fat-headed moment.

But then again, he has every reason to be so.

:) Great clip, thanks for posting.

  • he is a great comic. but like other great comics they suffer the ability to interact with their host instead of just being the main attraction.

  • Wow, pretty easy to tell who had the pants in that interview.

  • when he started singing i swear to god i told myself a second before this isnt so funny and im crying now.

  • oh come on billy210uk, i mean his films are not great but sum are good i thought La story was good. He seems arrogantly funny at times and he seems to share a similair gene too jim carrey. I like steve martin i just like the studipness he creates

  • Saying Steve Martin is not funny is like saying Graham Norton is not gay... Of course Steve Martins funny you just have to have a sense of humour though!

  • Yeah whatever, go back to watching Cheaper by the dozen 2

  • Quite agree JPOK1000 ; and before being so ignorantly dismissive of such a talent, one should remember Steve had a hugely successful comedy TV career through the sixties, before making any films, and was also THE first superstar touring comedian - selling out arenas and stadiums for years. Not funny ? Please !!

  • He's done all that and yet he's still NOT FUNNY.

  • well said! i love steve martin, hes a talented guy, makes me laugh, and he reminds me so much of my grandad, i think thts y i get so upset wen i c ppl bein rude coz igts like their dissin my family!

  • @JPOK1000 Funny or not, it's a stupid argument. It's a matter of taste and preferences.

I just happen to find him very funny. But I don't expect everyone to have the same sense of humour as me.

  • Would be nice to see Ross do a modern interview with Martin where he isn't going to be whipped. He looks amateur, here. Ross isn't so bad, though.

  • Ross definitely got better with age. in everyway

  • Steven Martin normally annoys me but this is an AWESOME interview!

  • man steve martin is amazing here

  • great interview, thanks for capping and posting

  • i had no idea jonathon ross has been around so long. i was only born that year and hes still hilarious

  • Martin is such a genius. The way he talks around Ross is amazing. You can tell Ross is just getting embarrassed because he can't keep up.

  • Haha! Steve is funny in this. I'm not a particular fan of his, but I have to admit he did great in this. For Steve Martin, of course. ;p

  • Haha that was a painful interview.

  • it was good enough, i mean why do your best stuff?

  • Johnathans so young omg.

  • steve martin at his best!! and jonathan was pretty handsome back then- less funnier, but better looking!

  • omg how oldd is this. an that suit!! lol

  • Steve martin rips Jon Ross top shreds

  • "Steve what's next for you?" "Failure I guess"

  • The pointy birds

    Are pointy pointy

    anoint my head

    anointy nointy.

  • He really is on top form.

  • jonathan ross aged well

  • Jonathan Ross is a much, much better interviwer now.

Unless he was just incredibly nervous about interviewing Steve Martin.

  • "Unless he was just incredibly nervous about interviewing Steve Martin."

    had nervous all over it.

  • can't believe how clumsy Jonathan Ross looked there

  • I'd do both of them now...under that desk! lol

  • wow jonathan ross was skinny and steve martin was funny 20 years ago.

  • jonathan ross was shyte back then,,, hes the best now - but he sucks in this one...

  • jonathan ross was shit at interviewing back then

  • =) has he always had white hair? how old is he?

  • Hilarious interview! I always love watching Jonathan Ross's show, but Steve Martin is a really funny guy too!
