@LispenardStudio Absolutely. Morton Feldman composed Rothko Chapel when he was 45. But he was 15 when he composed the hebraic melody played by the viola at the very end of the piece (heard on this excerpt).
you can feel the void in this piece the space below, around, above God, where there is nothing. Everything in our universe that frightens us and amazes us, listen to that dissonance in the lower register. Thanks for the upload
@Makussan Difficile à dire... Rothko Chapel est une très bonne introduction, ainsi que les oeuvres courtes (The Viola in my life, For Franz Kline...). Evitez de vous lancer d'emblée dans ses oeuvres "marathon", comme Triadic memories (1h30), Crippled Symmetry (1h30) ou le 2ème quatuor (5h)... :)
The Rothko Chapel in Houston is only a small part of this video. Most of the shots are from other museums. Not exactly an accurate name for this video. I would have thought the chapel itself would be enough for a concept piece, but the fact that they muddled it with other museum works of Rothko rather negates the concept for me.
Actually I called this video "Morton Feldman : The Rothko Chapel" because it's the end of a piece of music by Morton Feldman called "The Rothko Chapel"... :-)
You're right, jscnhei3. Morton Feldman composed "Rothko Chapel" at 45. But he had composed the hebraic melody played by the viola, at the very end of the piece, at 15.
Phew, talk about a disarmingly simple, yet haunting finale. Listening to this work in a museum hall, surrounded by Jasper Johns paintings, was such a lovely experience.

Felman saw the bloody chapel and went with it.... Mark Rothko had already killed himself by then.... But shit happens.

My French is so-so but it looks like the video info says Feldman was 15 when he composed the music. Wikipedia says he was 45 at the time.

We played this score, arranged for the ensemble, at Erev/Laila Festival, in Trieste, November 2008. Rothko Chapel is a masterpiece.
