I've never actually heard his voice in real life. Apparently he pitched it even for cartoon Dave a little. Song is a bit dorky, but he has a good singing voice.
@143AC I remember thinking recently that I've never heard Ross Bagdasarian Jr. sing anything: in the old days when Sr. was alive, David Seville often sang with The Chipmunks, but whenever Jr's Dave was involved, it was more like bantering with them during the song breaks.
The melody of "Come on-a my house" appears to be based upon an Armenian melody popularized as "Catskill-in Jampan" or "The Road to the Catskills". In the Armenian song, a boy (traveling on the road to the Catskill mountain resorts) falls in love with a girl and offers her many presents as a token of his affection - gold, silk stockings, fruits, etc. This may also be the same melody of a Turkish song called "Ben bir kasap" (see youtube Ben Bir Kasop).
Nope, this is way better than the Rosemary Clooney version. This song is supposed to be Armenian-sounding, and that was lost in her version. Thank goodness Ross and Will did their own version of the song, because this is what it's supposed to sound like.
This song is actually based on a traditional Armenian song. I know that the tune is pretty much the same, but I don't know if the English lyrics are similar to the original ones in Armenian. Another Armenian man from Fresno sang the original song for me once, some years ago.
William Saroyan and Ross Bagdasarian are two of the most famous people from Fresno, California. I knew Ross was the creator of Alvin and the Chipmunks, but I didn't know he had such a great voice. BTW, David Seville was Ross' stage name - the same as the non-chipmunk character on the show. Interesting stuff!
Thank hyedrum for posting this beautifully romantic song. I enjoyed it very much. :)
