  • On this date in 1968 {Jan. 27th} "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; on March 16th it would peaked at No. 1 {for 4 weeks} and spent a total of 16 weeks in the Top 100!!!

  • R.I.P otis, dying at the age of 38.

  • How can you dislike this? Sounds like 99 problems.

  • 99 people would rather watch sitting on the toilet

  • How many people know why Otis is whistling at the end of the song? Its because he only had 2 takes, and he forgot the lyrics at the end. STILL one of the greatest songs EVER. Just a fact that I personally found interesting. Recorded 3 days before he died, on Dec 7, 1967, he, of course died on DEC 10. RIP Mr. Redding, and Thank you!

  • Louis CK ruined this for me.

  • thx

  • I smoke fat blunts on the beach listening to this song. My own little slice of paradise. Love you otis. May you eternally RIP!

  • some people below just need to sit on the dock of the bay, and fucking relax.

  • Ottis Redding was a legend. This is my favorite Ottis Redding song.

  • I get chills listening to this song. So lyrical and soulful.

  • Me and my brother have completely different tastes in music. He's a "Mod" into beat, soul and ska, whereas my tastes are more into avant-garde music, post-punk, psychedelia and world music, but we've both come back from our very seperate musical journeys by agreeing that this is the greatest song ever recorded.

  • Brings back wonderful memories of a great clube we used to have in my hometown called "Dock of the Bay " a local talent Jerry Fisher formely of Blood Sweat and Tears used to sing it , "Dock of the Bay" was washed away in Katrina and this song takes me back to that wondeful place evertime I hear it

  • @lilpetiteme you know i love this like ,most but when you think of it its pretty depressing a guy sitting at a dock thinkin about suicide if it was done in minor keys instead of major keys it would sound mega hopless but if you listen to the music its pretty uplifting. if it was switched to minor key it,d be unlistenable

  • this song is so chilled ! today i would say only the greats like jack johnson and ben harper ever dream of being as chilled as this song :) and no negative comments! this song is too beautiful and if you have a different taste in music thats fine, i probably dont like yours either

  • Take 2 hmmmm, I'm thinking 'sitting on a cock cause I'm gay' for take one maybe?

(prays people have seen the Ricky Gervais/ Jerry Seinfeld etc relevant video)

  • @AlgernonsDream shut the fuck up

  • @ThePsionicMatrixTM Why? I’m helping U develop a sense of humour as I think U may have petty anger management issues. So please don’t kill your kids over spilt milk. Unless U R a child coz U sound like one. Could U not tell that my comment was tongue n’ cheek? It was tempered with a knowing wink through the phrase ‘prays people ....’ I like this song! Now as U read and take an age to understand this, it becomes funny, coz in fact it’s been ME that has indeed made YOU.... shut the fuck up. Peace.

  • @AlgernonsDream go fuck your self you fucking faggot.

  • @ThePsionicMatrixTM Sigh..Yeah, good one. I’m not gay and I’m not homophobic so calling me that doesn’t offend me. It just reveals your nastiness. If U were more intelligent maybe you’d realise that U just offended yourself. Possibly in more ways than one? Perhaps U just need 2 ‘sit on a cock if you’re gay?’ (It would fit with why U bizarrely defend this song so seriously. But it’s no real substitute for your carnality and I’m happily married so stop your transference onto me as well). Good luck

  • simply one of the best

  • 97 people fell off the dock of the bay.

  • I can see 1 or 2 idiots hitting the "don't like" button, just to get a rise out of others; but 97? WTF?

  • I've read in publications from the mid to late 1960s, where I came across this quote: "If Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul, then Otis Redding is definately her King" Now today as I reflect on that statement... I never heard of a King of Soul (sorry King Curtis), and James Brown is referenced as the God Father of Soul. King Otis it is!!!

  • It's a tragedy that this man died.

    Oakland California baby.

    Stay Punk!!!!!

  • Oti moja miłość

  • AWESOME SONG! visited SF this fall for two weeks, even got a tour of the city by my girlfriends relative who used to be a tour guide, the most beautiful city i've ever been to. can't wait to go back!

  • music doesn't have to be loud to pack a punch

  • I live by a docks here in San Pedro, CA... I actually listen to this song while I walk from my loft to the docks...and when I get there I too whistle.

  • Never felt so relaxed listening to this song. Listenened to it in a hot bath, candles, fine champagne cognac....letting the stress roll away! bliss

  • Best America.

  • Great song.

    Oakland California baby.

    Stay Punk!!!!!!!

  • Eu nasci em Maio de 1967 e ele se foi em Dezembro desse mesmo ano...uma grande perda !!

  • One word "Perfect"

  • It will soon be 44 years since this tragedy.I remember this song well.It was still a while before I heard of his death.RIP Otis Redding.

  • This song reminds me of my Grandpa so badly. He passed away 4 years ago and I still can't get used to the fact that I'll never get a chance to talk to him again. He was the only person who truly understood me. But, the memory of us, sitting by the river, throwing rocks in the water will always be something I'll remember when I think about my childhood.

You truly were and angel, grandpa, rest in peace!

  • @TheSunGlassesThing sorry for your loss

  • @TheSunGlassesThing you will see him again in heaven :)

  • I'm copying this mint song for homework

  • 94 people aren't sittin' on the dock of the bay.

  • THE SOUL<3 :')

  • :' ) . Sometimes this world is wrapped up in Facebooks, Twitters , Ipad 4's and what have you, that we can't enjoy one of life's simplest pleasures : Sittin' on the dock of the bay.

  • damn you louis c.k. ruined the song for me. "Sitting on a cock because i'm gay"

  • @jcota89 He didn't ruin the song when that joke is gone and forgotten people will still be listening to this song.

  • 92 peoples suck..

  • very good song

  • sittin on the cock cuz im gayy...

  • i love this song

  • Man, what a legend. This guy is just... a manifestation of soul. People these days are really missing out on real music.

  • mais pourquoi j'avais oublié ce morceau divin

excuse me otis ça y est j'ai rétabli tu es dans mes favo

  • I'm so sick of seeing comments from the younger generations raving on about how they're so young but still prefer the older music. Like seriously, do you want a medal? I'm 17 myself, yet you don't see me commented looking for respect and attention for listening to older music. Everyone has their own taste in music, & it just so happens that you're young and prefer to listen to older music. Congratulations, you listen to a good brand of music, but just don't go looking for attention.

  • 92 people fell in the water.

  • the whislte at the ending is actually the Horn lines he wanted...........great song

  • Truly amazing song. My father went to a Otis concert, I'm jealous.

See you later Otis (when i'm gone)!

  • My grandpa always said he was like the West Coast's own Marvin Gaye. I'm 17 and I love music like this so much better than now.

  • Poor Otis dead & gone, left me ear to sing his song, pretty little girl with the red dress on, poor Otis dead & gone.

  • It's a shame that I went to search this song and the first thing to come up is "Settin on tha Toilet".... fucking Youtube.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! its so relaxing

  • one of the greatest songs ever recorded in the history of music

  • old school swag

  • why, oh why, cruel world, does "sitting on a toilet" come up before "sitting on the dock of the bay"? this is obviously a much bosser song.

  • top 10 song of all time, maybe even #1

  • I was 14 years old when Otis lost his life in the plane crash. This song was released after his death, which is why there are no videos of him performing the song. What a shame, and a great loss to music.

  • I was only 2. And it breaks my heart because I rememmber it like yesterday. My parents cried and cried and cried. Now I am older and have to feel what they did now that I am older and can understand it all now.

  • @efesgirl999 Koo story bro.. I was still a sperm.. My daddy was only 14 years old.. He then married my mom at age 25.. 10 years later.. 1988.. I was born..

  • @efesgirl999 I had no idea... Tragic...

  • Love this...join my old school music group on facebook....DjCherry Webb's Old School Party Zone

  • I love the sentence 'and this loneliness won't leave me alone'

  • I mean, whatever means necessary. Glorious, pure music will always, I feel, be the forefront of good feelings and good times

  • Chesapeake Bay that is...

  • @dizzyloo wats that supposed to mean?

  • @whrobins431 get a map & a clue...

  • Aw man, this is SO, SO, SO good. Listen to those horns. Listen to the bass. The guitar lick is so in the pocket. And the piano. And Otis' voice.

Did I say this is so good? Swept me away.

  • 89 deaf people voted?

  • @KonniMechelle sorry its 25

  • @KonniMechelle Deaf or dumb.

  • I have been singing and whistling to this song for 40 years.it's simply brilliant.

  • Maurice LINDOR, tu me doit 400 € depuis plus 1 an.

Je te les réclame depuis un moment déjà.

Fais pas ton radin : rembourses !!

  • Loving this song: Thank you for the posting and Congratulation on the Lifetime Achievement PEN Award Paul Krassner. My curiosity... desires to know why this

  • I love this song and I've been looking for it. I do not agree with the music my kind produces and especially the fact of people saying nigger and other things, forgetting the history of it. I will never forget the good things that my people has done and people like Otis and jimi hendrix are the reason i'm not ashamed of my race.

  • @AyoCheckThis0ut What would music be without the contributions from people of color? No blues. No jazz? No hip hop? It'd be terrible.

  • @feloniuschunk I definetly agree!

  • Sometimes I think this gets wrongly labeled as an inspirational or a 'chill song'.

Pretty depressing if you actually listen to the lyrics.

  • @choleric75 yes, it's a really sad song, so deep and true.. it's not being chilled but being resigned.. I can't hold my tears when I listen to this

  • i so love this sing,im only 27 there is no one out there with a voice like otis, all thay want to sing about is girl, and drugs.i so wish we had otis now

  • my father passed away but when i was a kid he played this song all the time...he grew up in GA now I realize why this was one of his favorites

  • This was REAL SOUL music from the heart, this man was only 26 @ the time of this recording......look at the difference in our 26 yr old generation today. God bless America!!!!!!

  • Quem quiser, pode acordar com a campainha do despertador. Eu acordo com essa música :o)

  • i love this song soo much an im 21 i love good misic like this he was such a good artist..but i read in and article that.Redding considered the song unfinished, having whistled the tune of one verse for which he intended to add lyrics later,.and unfinished masterpiece and his only number 1 single..and this isnt the song jay-z and kanye sampleds thats try a little tenderness

  • Even though this song was not made with the Vietnam War in mind, it became one of many songs that was the 'soundtrack'[for lack of a better word] to the war and the time.

    - Of course it could be the result of me having been born in 1978 and grew up watching so many Vietnam war films with this song on their soundtrack somewhere. when I hear this song its what I think of.

  • Who is Jay z and Kayne ?

  • I feel warm again, I feel being the light and warm bark of those stone pines.

  • I visited Lake Monona today.. Let me just say that Otis died in a gorgeous spot. Incredible. I was walking around forever looking for the plaque and thank God I finally found it- It's on the ground.

  • Anyone who grew up in the 60's has to know this man & his music...some of the best ever recorded ;)

  • JAY Z AND KANYE WEST!!!!

  • Il vero Re del soul è Otis Redding! I Love him!

  • 0:58. What everyone thinks of when they picture Otis Redding in Georgia

  • Otis was the man. I love this song but its very depressing and a sad song.

  • @mrpower328 its not aimed at white middle class tossers, its for poor blacks to feel less lonesome, someone who knows the impact of financial repression.

  • @robmar555 Yes. That's the truth. It was like Otis was preaching and singing at the same time.

  • @robmar555 this song was one of my favorites growing up and still is and i was just a poor white girl growing up in the apartments that nobody really wanted to live in.....

  • If he were alive, he just turned 70, today.

  • I really wish I didn't read that "sittin on a cock cause im gay..." comment, cause now that is all I hear...

  • why are all these people talking about kanye and jay-z?

  • Sitting on a cock 'cause I'm gay...

  • @qwertyuioppoiqwe

Who the hell are Jay Z and Kanye?

  • @jimbonics3 platinum selling rappers

  • @qwertyuioppoiqwe You are a child

  • Otis, You left us too early.

  • Nice video HOWEVER...the original vinyl single sounds superior. It's here on youtube - more "punch" and clarity in the drums and overall sound. Same is true with other Motown artists such as The Supremes. I'm sadly skeptical about soul remasters, own an LP player and try to get my hands on the originals from back in the day! It's a whole world of difference to my ears.

  • WOW.

  • thanks to my grandmother

  • so simple, with this song

  • I love this song and always will I have wonderful memories of this shit

  • check out the rare otis track on my channel

  • "I left my home in Georgia

    Headed for the 'Frisco bay

'Cause I've had nothing to live for

And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay

    Watching the tide roll away

Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay

    Wastin' time"

    Lovely!

  • His greatest song ever. He very much deserves to be an inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
