It is both wonderful and heartbreaking to see this considering that same stretch of road is now littered with aggressive bums, crackheads, and other trash.
love that 37 chevy pickup shooting out there. I have one original unrestored with original 37 calif. lic. plates. see how all the women wore hats and dressed up downtown. now its winos, freaks, and just a empty cold place.
There probably were opiates and cocaine and weed dealers. It's a sea port. At that time, a legit commercial port, so lots of illegal shit, like the Maltese Falcon! In "mr Moto " films, there are a few shots of SF before the hideous high rise buildings. It's cool.
I saw the old building I used to work in during the early 1980's, of course it is gone now. Used to open the windows and watch the Parades, especially Fleet Week. Now just sleek impersonal glass towers, SF get more impersonal all the time, what a fun classy place it used to be for everyone from all walks of life. Now just Yuppies in suits wanting to tear down the old buildings and replace with glass tower cathedrals to unrestricted capitalism.
great footage, thanks for sharing. although as a native I have plenty of thoughts on SF's current psychosociological and financial condition, they have nothing to do with this video. just enjoy the footage, ok?
to me it just seems to be typical romanticising of the past. But I didn't live there so I'll take your word for it. So I'm interested in knowing how and why in your opinion in went so downhill in just the last 15 years. because many would say it was more like the last 35 years or so.
I think more changed between about 1900and 1941, then between 1941 and now. Just look at the footage of San fran from the early 1900s and note how it grew by '41
Well, if it's complete b.s., do you think Market St. today resembles in any way the normal decent productive looking scene in this 1941 film. Market St., the main street in town is a cess pool and the city refuses to address it. I worked in City Hall area for 5 yrs., it is surrounded by the Tenderloin; a seedier, raunchier and disease-ridden area cannot be found in this country. Family? Today? Not a single fireman or police officer lives in the City and Co. of SF - too expensive.
You complain about the way things are today in Frisco, in my life I have watched my city change over the last twenty years or so, some things have been restored, for me it was always nice to go downtown to see the Thanksgiving Day Parade at Gimble's department store. There were three department stores located at 8 th. and Market and they had subway station level picture windows and entrances, and all were ablaze with lights and deccorations, and it was still like that in the 90's.
I'm 42, and I was given a history lesson by my late parents every day of my life, and I would dread the Easter holiday, that meant I was dragged reluctantly to Robert Hall for an Easter suite and Buster Brown for shoes. My mother was raised in West Philadelphia and as a child, there Aunt's would take her and her sister on the Elevated- subway downtown to shop and eat lunch at Lit Brother's Departmet Store. It was a big deal to ride the subway and you had to be dressed to the nines!
Looking at this just shows how much we have de-evolved as a society. Look at how the people dressed, they actually took pride in themselves. I also didn't see as many drug dealers, bums, mental patients, or perverts. Back then it seems people wanted to (at least) give the appearence that they had class and intelligence. Funny how now it's the exact opposite. My how things do change.
You got that right, James. The once beautiful city by the bay with cable cars climbing halfway to the stars. Now they descend into panhandlers, drunks and drug addicts given the right to defecate in the streets. The radicals have taken over this beautiful city and ruined it.
Wisdom here 2525 but I'm afraid we have to face the fact that the scope of the depravity and the numbers participating in it have drastically increased since WWII era; and not just in SF.
SF is rapidly becoming a city with a vanishing middle class; too many wealthy and far too many poor. Not to say there aren't people in the middle...just not a lot.
I don't think the middle class is "vanishing" so much as just not progressing or making any more money. It's been like that for about the last 30 years in many places. Pretty disturbing trend that we should all be working to correct asap.
wow .. they are pretty high tech during those days .. i can imagine myself living during those old days

and the cable car turntable area is still one of the most fun places i;ve ever been. and it's safe.
