@54rein yeah, I was born in the late 80s, and by the time the media learned to tone down the racism and now it's a bit more subtle. So it's still a bit shocking to see commercials like that where it's just...so...painfully blatant. I agree, I love watching old commercials, they are a very fascinating glimpse into what the culture saw as valuable, and what the culture saw as socially acceptable and expected. thanks for posting them!
@dearmisterecho you are welcome. There was a TV show that you may have heard of called "Amos & Andy"
While cleverly written it portrayed all African Americans as bumbling fools. The NAACP complained bitterly, and the show was banned from TV by the mid 60's If you have never seen this show, some episodes do exist on youtube! Check it out!
@dearmisterecho These commercials are a fascinating look into our part of our (not so great) past. They are a great teacher in a sense: how would you feel if a commercial, comment was made that affected your ethnicity? As a very young white person at that time, I did not understand the pain that many out there must have felt. While we are far from being a perfect society today, thank goodness we have moved away from this sort of thing
@dolcevitausa ha-ha...I never tried it, despite the fact that it must have been advertised at least 3 times an hour. Glad to hear that I didn't miss anything.
The husband in that first ad for Lifebuoy looks like Brian Posehn's dad! I can't think of Lifebuoy without thinking of Ralphie getting his mouth washed out with soap for swearing in "A Christmas Story": "It . . . it was . . . SOAP POISONING!" (parents wail and moan) "I told you not to use Lifebuoy!"
