I've got that set! I reviewed it on CollectionDX's YouTube channel.
I tried something similar a number of years ago, though I used the RIS 1.5 set and made it into a robot instead. it drove itself forward, and when it bumped into something it would back up, turn, and go another direction.
Problem was countering the rolling motion (you see it in the POV angle here), so I put training wheels on the back.
Admittedly an awkward-looking MOC, but it worked well enough.
i used the old hailfire set 4481 (about $60 on ebay) and made some major modifications for the battery and suspension. the motors are geared up and use the gears already integrated into the set. if you want just the wheels, go to bricklink and search "hailfire wheel"

No, just used the old non-motorized set and took most of it apart to fit the electronics.
