Eschenbach is a Mozart specialist but he is a wonderful conductor of modernist composers like Barber, etc. The write-up is a bit dated. Eschenbach is now music director of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. This is an excellent use of his talents, although many of us in Chicago hated to see him go. You can't go wrong in purchasing recordings or tickets to hear Christoph Eschenbach!
We don't know Eschenbach personally but he has a wonderful clarity in his playing and his conducting. At Ravinia, it appeared to us that CSO musicians were especially fond of him and he did deliver some truly memorable performances. He is missed and his return guesting is valued by his fans in Chgo. He seems more humble than many other "stars" and one feels he is genuinely interested in emphasizing the composer over himself.
