Surprisingly, a lot of the checking out is actually posturing and threat displays... These little birds are amazingly agressive towards each other, and will sometimes attack their own reflections when nectar sources are scarce and they are defending their few resources. Very intersting to watch them up close and understand their fast and furious little lives! :-)
@jcmegabyte maaan I hate when they attack eachother and their own reflections, they are so pretty, and there are so few where I live :/ wish I could let them know it's okay and that they don't have to fight and I'm watching and will fill up their feeder every time it runs out so they have a never ending supply until migrating time!
That's what I was thinking too - I could put out a dozen feeders with an unlimited supply of juice and still they would fight! I guess they are just instictually "programmed" to hoard and defend resources! Silly birds! :-)
When I first captured that, I couldn't believe it.. I had never seen that. You are right, they go a lot, and I've probably seen it about 4 times in the stuff I've taken. As much as they drink... it makes sense!
It would be cool to get that kind of activity here but my birds are anything but sociable. Two or three females set up territories around my feeders and chase away all the others. There are many others around but they rarely get near the feeder. I'll check out your vids...

They seem to do that quite a bit (after all - they gotta go SOMETIME! hahaha) but not often during the 5-10 seconds I'm shooting. :-)

It's interesting when more than one shows up but that's rare. They usually fight so much that only one can sneak in at a time, IF lucky! :-)

Not rare in my area. I usually get 7 or so at a time. I got video of at least 5 on my channel.
