  • horrible sing, simply awful. what an insult to the song.

  • Love how the blonde is Sarah and the brunette is Adelaide :D

And btw, Lauren is supposed to sound like that; Adelaide's character has one of the most annoying voices in any musical (expect maybe Audrey in little shop of horrors)

  • @spacklegirl I wouldn't say it was the WORST but it was pretty bad. Lauren's voice is NOT Broadway live stage quality; I thought Titus (who I'd seen in The Little Mermaid and it was decent) was great but far and away Oliver Platt is the worst stage presence I have ever seen in the universe. Nevermind, sweaty.

  • @genungapearl While Adelaide is trying to marry Nathan the entire show, + 14 before the show, she's also trying to make him give up gambling first. The first lyric she sings is "...You can't get alterations on a dress you haven't bought" Meaning, she can't alter/change Nathan before she buys/marrys him.. So now, they're going to focus their efforts entirely on marrying the men and worrying about their "problems" later.

  • I think the thing I love about this song is that if you were to cut it into a Disney movie, it would be the song the villains sang.

  • This song, catchy as it is, never made much sense to me. "Marry the man today". What has Adelaide been trying to do for the entire show?

  • Ok a few things from this: 1.) Lauren is good, but brings nothing to the role...she keeps giving this look as "Wow, this is cool". 2.) Lauren is way too still and boring 3.) Did they lower the key for her? 4.) This looks like a special of called "Singing with the Stars" and at one point someone will get voted off!

  • @curtainswoods 1) She's trying not to fall down in those shoes. 2) See #1. 3) She was right on key...if anything the woman playing Sarah was a bit low but it works fine. 4) If you read the label it was from the nomination special for the 2009 Tony's.

  • I'm watching too much gilmore girls. I always think: Why the hell is Lorelai singing that? :D

hahaha, but Lauren is a good singer!

  • I love Lauren don't get me wrong, however she feels wrong in this. It's rare for me to say that I feel a casting choice isn't so hot but in this case it's true. She's had many successes in her career but this was more of a bump. She's definitely a good singer but this just feels wrong.

  • Kate Jennings Grant is incredible in this, and as much as I love Lauren she really does outstrip the poor girl. Then again, Adelaide is such a hard role to play, and I compare everyone to Vivian Blaine...

  • those ridiculous shoes are restricting her, and making her look extra nervous and awkward. I still can't believe they cast her as Adelaide. There is nothing remotely like Adelaide in this besides the lyrics :(

  • Woah!

    Lorelai

  • they were great! I love Lauren Graham so much! She is so funny and just amazing!

  • ick...that last note.... man, I like Lauren Graham but she just looks awkward and scared in this video...

  • I just wish this song was available on iTunes. I like Lauren's version.

  • we are doing guys and dolls for our school musical its gonna be awesome

  • Although Loren Graham is a good singer, when she sings in her character voice, she is rather off key. Yes, I realize that she's supposed to sing in a character voice (nasal, New York dialect), but that doesn't take away the fact that Adelaide needs to be able to sing.

  • So weird not seeing her talk super fast as Lorelei.

  • I didn.t know Lauren was that good, and she looked amazing, that dress is stunning, so she is a amazing, and I just love her!

  • lauren is amazing!

  • Have a baby! Have 2! 6! 9! STOP!

  • You people are soo not getting it, Lauren's being a good actor, her voice is supposed to be flat and nasal, it's her character, if u listen to other times when she sings, she doesn't sound like this at all, her natural voice is waaay different, she's acting people!

  • love this. I played sarah is my school production recently and this was my favorite song to perform!!!!

  • love it! : )

  • This is so difficult to watch! I had tickets to see this and was so psyched about it - until the show closed early. :( I really wanted to see Lauren! My high school did the show, so it's not like I haven't seen a production of Guys & Dolls, but darn it, I was this close to seeing Lauren...

  • lauren graham is amazing!

  • I completely agree with everything has been said here, it's definitely more of a character voice. Any performance that requires a character voice isn't always going to be sung real well. Take bye bye birdie for instance, the teenagers in that show are supposed to be played nasally and annoying, yet that cast album has some of my favorite vocalnperformances on it. Personally, I though this was good, other than the semi-out of characterness of it all.

  • wow i was in a production of guys anddolls and i was nicely nicely johnson and im soorry to say but the 8th grade prefromed guys and dolls and our sarah and adelaide was sooo much better then these to why are they on broadwya couldnt have they picked some one...better?

  • apart from tottering ridiculous on the heels which inhibited their performance, they were very good!

  • i love lauren from gilmore girls, but both of them just seem bored.

  • Alright, this is not a horrible performance, in fact it's pretty good. But I will say that I don't believe Lauren would have made through equity callbacks based on her voice alone. Vocally I don't believe she's strong enough for Broadway. Yes, performing 3 hours a day is hard, but this is what singer's are expected to do. I go through 2 hours of preparation before performing a show. Preparation and technique are what get you through not talent. Talent makes you sound good and she is talented.

  • this may very well be true, but you have to remember, all casting directors for musicals are all looking for someone who is first and foremost an actor and then a singer "an actor who can sing" other than "a singer who can act".

Also in my opinion Adelaide is more of a character voice, and I think it would be ruined by an actress who is singing very pretty or being too overstated with the performance.

    Just my 2 cents

  • I agree with you on the character voice thing, but her interpretation was a little too far off pitch when it seemed like nasalizing would have had the same effect.

  • great song... great performance...

    ...terrifying concept!

  • Omg lauren has an amazing voice its sopossed to sound like that im adalaide in the play i think i would kno

  • she sang on the show!!! it's an awesome episode. sings I will always love you :P

  • I had no idea that the actress from Gilmore Girls could sing. Whoa. Awesome.

  • @KikimoLie She can't.

  • okay, for everyone who keeps saying lauren doesnt have a good voice. how about you try to get up and proform a 3 hour show in front of hundreds of people. and do that every day, it might not b her greatest peice (not implying) but she obviosly has talent in order to be on broadway. which is a huge success if you ask me

  • I played iN pit orchestra for Jekyl and hyde musical. And the songs werent "pretty" but very difficult. And by the 4th night, all voices were so strained. I agree with you. It takes talent to perform that long.

  • People, stop judging Lauren from this one clip! She doesn't sound too good here, I'll give you that, but Adelaide isn't supposed to sound good!!! Actually Lauren has a really nice voice, it's not her fault that Adelaide doesn't ;)

  • I was Adelaide in this show.

This is my least favorite song in the show.

    by far.

    But this version is goood.

  • @Call911imshot -

I've done this show at a professional theatre, and this is BY FAR one of the best songs of the show, for the girls atleast.

  • Lauren Graham does this well. This song is really awkward and difficult. Besides, Adelaide isn't suppose to sound amazing, especially in this number.

  • okay you cant watch this and pretend its lorelai cause its not. I know its hard because Lauren is such an amazing actor she makes you believe its lorelai but its not, its lauren, and its not that she has a bad voice, her character is supposed to have that kind of monotone nasally voice, once again she is being an amazing actor.

  • @woah0we0cool Yep! I agree, with everything. She's awesome. :-)

  • Comment removed

  • i know:)

  • @woah0we0cool She actually has a pretty good voice I'd say.

  • @ritsfata she has an amazing voice!

  • ...oh my.

  • okay people need to shut up; it's not that Lauren isn't a good singer; if she wasnt a good singer she wouldnt have gotten on the broadway show;Adelaine's voice is SUPPOSE to have that nasally thing.

  • Um, that's not necessarily true. I can name a number of people who can't sing yet are in Broadway shows. That's not a good defense. Sorry. :(

  • Nice one ;-) Love Guys and Dolls

  • Gilmore Girls is my favorite so I was really excited to see Lauren play Miss Adelaide, but this is just terrible...i hate saying that, but shes monotone and isnt hitting the notes or is just can't sing. =/ i love her as Lorelai, but i don't think shes a good stage actor

  • ... I like Faith Prince from 1992 the best. She's just the PERFECT doll. Lauren's performance in this broadway classic is kind of sad to say the least.

  • i like Lorelei, but she kinda sucks in this! It's like Lorelei pretending to act and sing.

  • Yeah, I agree! It's too bad though because I've seen her act better than this and she can sing!

  • yeah i love lauren graham but i dont think she was too good in this song but she was probably nervous, she was great in Adelaide's lament though.

  • thats cause the only thing you've really seen her in was Gilmore Girls so you're so used to it. However, being kind of a musical junkie, I did see this play at my college a few years back before I started going there, and I have to say the girl who played Adelaide there was better, but I don't Lauren was trained to be a broadway star. But judging on her performance sans NY accent She's a really talented singer. Some people train to be nothing but broadway stars and you can hear it in their voice

  • They have that kind of talking singy voice, i can't really describe it, but you know it when you hear it. But she can definitely sing, that Lauren Graham. So cute and Talented she is.

  • @BrieLarsonfan123 lol, thanks! i luv when people comment on my comments

  • Lauren acts a bit like Lorelai in this, haha.

  • I simply love this!

  • fabulous shoes, ladies!

  • I saw both of these wome live!

    They were both brilliant!

Lauren Graham was such a surprise, she is CERTAINLY cut out for Broadway and theTony stage.

  • OMG! I never knew Lauren could sing!

  • I saw Lauren live a few days before it closed... Most the cast had no idea.

She seems nervous to me. I thought she was really good considering.

  • Lauren isn't a COMPLETE train wreck, but she does seem to make Adelaine too dull and unentertaining.

  • I really don't think Lauren is cut out for musicals, I mean sure, she can pull it off but it's not the best. Personally, I don't think Guys and Dolls should have started out with a celebrity, they should've relied on orginal Broadway talent, like Kate. Lauren is a fantastic actress but she's more of a TV personality then a singer. :( So sad it closed.

  • And it was at the bloody Nederlander!

    Rather still have RENT anyday!!!

  • The point of Adelaide isn't to have her be played by the best singer ever. Adelaide is supposed to be a lil' rough around the edges. Although Lauren Graham isn't the BEST singer in the world, I think she played a pretty good Adelaide.

  • Stop being so harsh to Lauren Graham, she has a good voice and yes she is a bit over powered by the other woman. If she didn't put on the accent her voice would be less harsh and sound so much better; but that's the point, there's an accent to get rid of that, to create the harshness of her voice.

  • They are character actors...both of their voices are perfectly suited for this role. This is an older musical similar to Mame in the sense that the roles were more geared towards the characters and not their voices. Come on guys do you think Carol Channing had a beautiful sounding voice...no but shes one of the best character actors still around.

  • I don't know why everyone is saying lauren sucks. I mean no, she's not the best on broadway but she can still sing and she plays the character well.

  • Um, who let Lauren do this? Ouch.

  • Lauren Graham really has the voice of Adelaide

  • Lauren Graham really has the voice of Adelaide

  • Really bad... I honestly think that lauren, thought is a great actress, does not sing broadway-level enougth for playing that roel AT ALL...

    nor ensemble

  • that last note sounded.... bad?

  • I feel like it sounds bad because ratio-wise Kate is giving too much and Lauren isn't giving enough. That last note really requires balance, and I agree that the balance isn't really there.

Having said that, I really like Lauren as Adelaide. I'm sure there were a lot of people pissed that she got the part, since I'm sure it's partially the name, and that they could have found someone with a stronger voice who can play the character equally well, but she does make a super cute Adelaide.

  • I love that to defend Lauren people are saying that KATE is bad. Kate's fabulous, and if you say she did bad on this, clearly you weren't listening. I love Lauren dearly, but. Come on. Kate overpowers her here.

  • wow! lauren can sing!

  • aren't there a bunch of guys and dolls references in Gilmore Girls? lol Kind of ironic.

  • lauren's shoes are really cute.

  • i wish america would share some of their great talent... not that the aussie cast was bad. But these guys just seem a heap better!

  • Sorry!

  • Check out the english Guys and Dolls that had ewan McGreggor in, it was AMAZING!

  • AH! yes, i love that version! ewan sang a high B flat at the end of Luck Be a Lady too. Beautiful.

  • love this song!!!!!! both have great voices!!! although lauren is much better i love how she got into her character again!! loved the accecent!!!!!!!! Perfect!!!!

  • Bahaha, so cute! I loved this.

  • lol lauren usually has a really good singing vioce but she did excellent playing Adelaide!!

  • lauren has a very interesting voice, it has character

  • i still dont understand why this was revived again, the 1992 one was perfect.

  • i think that she should meet amy grant

  • Ok, not my favorite musical although I can see why it is a classic. The role Graham is playing, done by Vivian Blaine, on stage and in film, and Faith Prince, whom I saw, a few years ago on stage, is really a parody if the NY "broad" with the heart of gold" thing and is usually much campier than this, but this was not the show, just a song from the show. I'm surprised that Graham sings as well as she does and would like to see her sing a straight song without the affect before judging.

  • I LOVE Lauren (thus my username) but she looks kind of uncomfortable here, doesn't she?

  • it's called acting... she's playing a character even though she's in plainclothes...

  • Not a favorite musical of mine, it okay, just never a big hit for me...but hey thank good for everyone being different. But i have to say that im impressed by Lauren. Shes actually okay...

  • Lauren rocks! And the song is amazing!

  • Are they wearing the same shoes on purpose?

  • Lauren And Kate Were Wonderful! =] Great For Laurens First Time On Broadway I Think She Did A Good Miss.Adelaide ! :)

  • I love this show. can't believe they showed it.

  • hahah right but if she did it just like in the movie you bitch about that too

  • And you do?

  • Age shmage. Leave her alone. Not everyone can do accents.

  • Seeing as this was the first Broadway show Lauren has been in this is a good performance. It's probably hard going from TV to Broadway. Props!

  • I love Lauren's dress :D

  • Love, love, love, love Lauren!

  • awesome

  • I love Lauren and I think for her first time on broadway she has done really well. She has a good voice.

  • definitely one of my favorite musicals of all time. they are amazing and i met them and they are sooooooooooooooooo sweet :)

  • i've seen the musical 4 times and they're awesome!! i've got no words to describe them (L)

  • Really?? I had no idea! XD

I think she did a hell of a job on stage and off stage! I've seen the movie and I think Lauren does a terrific Adelaide!!

  • shes a great singer.. but i dont see her as adelaide :\

  • Lauren was Great. this is her first out of character song with part of her character still in. she wasn't used to singing in front of a life audience without her costume. i loved how she tried to remember her cues and listen to the notes. for a first timer she did wonderful.

  • I like this one alot!

  • i think lauren did a great job concidering this is her first i think she kept up well with kate, she definitly has a voice

  • she did amazing!

  • the first time i heard this i thought lauren didn't do too well, but then i went on itunes and listened to the original cast recording, and it sounds exactly the same...so it's the way she's supposed to sound....

  • lauren is suppoed to sound lik that. adelaide sounds annoying and has a high pitched voice.

  • they sound good together

  • I don't think Lauren sounds bad...

  • shes supposed to sound bad like that

  • It's not bad. It's stylized.

  • ...yeah, no she's not.

  • Hahaha. I love that this has THREE thumbs up, like this is a good point or something. Thanks for the laugh, YouTube.

  • No way! I saw the show and Lauren was great. She didn't turn the role into a cartoon as do many.

  • I think that most of these comments are unfair... you're missing the point. Adelaide is SUPPOSED to speak and sing in that way. In fact Lauren isn't doing the accent as strongly as many of the other people who've played Adelaide. It is annoying, it's meant to be and Adelaide's not meant to be a great singer, hence why the best job she can get is at the Hot Box when she's trying to be a big star. Go listen to any of the Guys and Dolls cast recordings and you'll see what I mean.

  • Her performance was disapointing, I gotta say. I love Lauren, but throughout the show she speaks with this weird monotone that came off as creepy and less cute. Secondly, her singing was.. It deffinitly could've been worse, but it wasn't good. And throughout the first act I asked myself "Why isn't she dancing more?"

And then the second act opened, and we saw "Mink" ... and I found out. She's very awkward on stage, as seen here. And I just wish there had been better casting.

  • lauren graham was born in hawaii but only lived there for 3 weeks and then grew up in virginia.

  • lol this is funny. anyone who has ever worked in theater knows that not every performance is great. this was a little off, but i hardly think we can judge either of these ladies and how well they pull the show off based on this performance

  • i just saw the play two days ago and there it was really amazing!

  • YAY YAY YAY YAY LAYREN

  • agreed...

  • i'm not saying that it's harder for anyone from Virgina to do a newyork accent, but im just saying it's not 1 of Lauren's strongest points. nobody is best at everything, and I think she is amazing at so many other things. I also think that Kate did a great job, too. =D

  • Lauren Graham is from Hawaii

  • just because it's her first broadway show doesn't mean she should be FLAT! This isn't community theatre.

  • I will admit though that the little choreography in the song is very simple and cute and i enjoyed that :)

  • well i thought they both were great

  • or stop?

  • she sounds great.!

she has to do a differnt voice!

  • TLM is The Little Mermaid-the show Faith Prince is currently staring in. My point is that Mary Testa completely outshines all four leads. And quite honestly, volleyballchick15luv, many young girls in virgina can play Adelaide much better than Ms. Graham did...and obviously we did find plenty of things to critize, you would be able to see them if people didn't just make all the post stating the truth disapear, because soon, there will be no posts left except the ones by peopel without ears...

  • saw Faith in 'Catered Affair', which was an ill-conceived production. unfortunately, i think faith's time may have passed and that's a shame. have not see TLM; is it worth it for her, or too limited a role for the costly ticket? btw, to others, not a lauren hater; she tries but the talent for this role is not there.

  • I agree with you, Faith's time has passed...I have not seen her as Ursula, Sherie Rene Scott was the only reason I saw the show in the first place and I couldn't imagine seeing it with some one different-but if you get cheap tickets, then yes, see it!

  • I do admit that the background actors and singers are very good, too, but I think the 4 leads are rightfully picked :)

  • i love lauren graham but she should stick to acting

  • LOVE THIS!

  • definitely not the best, but not horrendous either. and i think that last note was screwed up by kate j grant- lauren landed it, albeit a lil shrill.

  • ARE you kidding me! Lauren Graham was flat on the last note and Kate J Grant was the one on key! Lauren is great in the show at her dialogue but not at singing and Kate J Grant is the one that was great at dialogue and singing and had the most believable performance in the show!

  • No, that note was screwed up by Lauren Graham, Kate Jennings Grant absolutely nailed that note...I wonder what was going through her head when she heard that sound next to her....

  • completely unmusical, agree. they are not singing. faith prince, where are you?

  • delightful!!

  • =) truly amazinggg
