Teeth is right. Hackett was one of the founders, and it's too bad he was drowned out by My-Way-Only Banks. I like the way Collins sings this epic one, though. This was their Stairway to Heaven.

While bouncing back and forth between Genesis and Yes, I once again realize; they are some of the most musically gifted people of any period and have provided the sound track to my life. A most beautiful one I might add!
Wow! Two minds think alike!! Love love love both Genesis and Yes very much and I have been a diehard Genesis and Yes fan since my first year in uni (college) back in !986.
And both of us the fair sex? I haven't heard this song in nearly two decades and my heart is melting!
err, well... it's rather well known that Tony was a control freak of the highest order and was responsible for not only a lot of Peter/band tension but deliberately downmixing Hackett's playing when Steve was at the peak of his guitar. He mixed him almost entirely out of the Lamb but if you watch vids here or get bootlegs you can finally here how awesome Hackett became.
God, Gabriel was sexy...he kind of frightened me back then, but in a good, yet uncomfortable way. They had that Pink Floyd, Ziggy Stardust/Bowie edge also, but were unique in themselves. Great era of bands....
Gabriel gave the band his personality and those surreal lyrics, both things combined are 50% of what Genesis was all about when they were good...the remaining 50% was great colourful music but is mostly due to the others. The fact is that when Gabriel left, the remaining 50% could sustain them just for a couple of lp's. When progressive music faded, the others became a quite lame refined-pop ensemble. I mean, Phil Collins, come onnnn!!!! Better put him on them drums!!!!!
The early Hackett solo albums do have a strong Genesis feel, and if you listen to the pre hackett Genesis (e.g Trespass) there is a significant change into the "classic Genesis" even though Gabriel was in it from the start. Gabrial leaves af Lamb lies down but it wasn't till after wind and wuthering (the last studio album with Hackett) that the classic Genesis feel departs. with all the PG Vs. Phil, the importance of Hackett has been much overlooked in Genesis discussions.
@DrTeeth02 I agree but add that everything you said about Hackett's influence is doubly true for Ant Phillips. He is truly the ghost who haunts and pervades the "classic" Genesis sound.
@DrTeeth02 That's exactly what I think. Steve Hackett had a big influence in early Genesis' sound. I wouldn't say he made Genesis sound how they did before he left, because Trespass although different has most of the elements of the latter and classic albums. Tony Banks is also worth mentioning, many of the best compositions where made by him. What I do think is that PG lead Genesis to the direction they had, Steve Hackett contiunued that line but PC just took another path.
@DrTeeth02 it's also really true, in a different but very similar way, with george harrison and the beatles...nice to hear someone explaining a bit about the genesis mystique, cheers
@DrTeeth02 I feel the same. Even tho Peter gave a certain feel to the band, it is when Hackett left that, in my opinion, Genesis lost the depth they showed in earlier productions.
@DrTeeth02 I completely agree. Of course, peter gabriel was very artistic and had great showmanship, but when hacket left, genesis turned pop, and i just couldnt listen to it....
@DrTeeth02 The balance of commercial & non- commercial tastes changed over the years. Tony, peter & steve did it just for the music. Phil & mike were very capable of writing pop songs, tony was outnumbered. However they still came out with some strokes of brilliance!
Peter's voice just blows you away..I saw him in 86 and now I am fighting to get tix for his new tour....I just have always found his voice amazing...I love the music by the way...Carpet Crawl is my fav alltime Genesis tune
@maxigonnet -- I think that's a bit overstated. Gabriel and Hackett BOTH have solo material that's very "similar". The same? No. But similar? Absolutely.
Great masterpiece of music. The greatist one after the classical music era. And great soud of this video version through. But why is missing the (great) very end?
I saw these guys in Vancouver in the 70s this music is well thought out and meaningful truly should be heard by anyone who love music. I really like "The music box"

An absolute gem of the greatest generation......one of the best interpretations of modern poetry intertwined to contemporary progressive rock. Peter Gabriel is the Prog Richard Burton/Alec Guinness......as a 25 year old I thank the god who is undoutbutably dressed as a sly fox that dances the foxtrot that my father introducted me to early Genesis....it is and always will be my own musical Genesis.
Looking at this video reminds me of something Huey Lewis once said "don't ever take yourself too seriously or when your old you'll be embarrassed as you reflect back on your youth"
With or without you... (U2 song, take the joke...) gabriel, and without him, everything was ...ok, this song maybe is my favourite, and I´ve many, many of Genesis, with or without.... Phill Collins, maintained Genesis, in another way, but the quality of the band , ok, go down, but going down from the first, still maintain some power....
Let´s go to Marillion with or without Fish?
Interesting debate. Anyway, Genesis was the best Sinfonic band in his time
Genesis without PG is like a crayon. Pointless. Without SH it's totally pointless. Phil Collins- what happened to you? Should have stuck to drumming and left your oversize ego at home.
I really love this video--I loved this song in the 70's and never saw it or Genesis in concert then, so this is the 1st time I'm seeing Gabriel singing it, after all these years just hearing it.
I will be seeing both Peter Gabriel (with orchestra) and Peter Hammill/Van der Graaf Generator this month!! That will keep me going until Lacrimosa can be persuaded to perform here again.
If some VT engineer has the rest of this performance, may make him post it on Youtube. Don’t get me wrong: it’s great to have even these parts of ‘Supper’s Ready’.
Whereas I agree that the two post-Gabriel albums with Hackett were excellent and ‘…And Then There Were Three…’ was OK, ‘Duke’ was sterile, and what were they thinking after Duke??!!
When I was in college in the 1970s I used to listen to this side of vinyl before every exam. I am not sure if it helped with exam scores, but I burned the song, lyrics and all, into my memory cells (some of which still remain). Listening to it brings back some amazing memories. To the other posts on this page ... who really cares if PG "engaged" in anything mind altering. He was clearly always in control. Great presence on stage. Musical genius.
The fact this video has only been viewed 617,000 or so times is proof how undiscovered Genesis is - fine by me. wouldn't want a bunch of idiots weighing in on their greatness!
@ClassicRockDVD Yeah, you're right - I don't think Gabriel needed to do drugs! Just a silly rumour I heard, but when have we ever let a little thing like the truth stand in the way of a ripping yarn...? Genesis were on of the first bands I saw live when I was about 15, back in the glory days of 70's prog - along with Hawkwind, and Gong, and Van der Graaf Generator...
@profbarkingmad I don't know about that, I've never heard of Peter Gabriel being associated with any type of drug like that. Ever. I doubt very seriously Peter Gabriel was on any type of drug in any of the performances that I've uploaded.
Genesis even after PG and Hackett were still one of the great rock bands of alltime! Different but great and Phil remained loyal to the band and it's history and legacy even when he could have jumped ship or been on a major ego trip.
It's funny because both Phil and PG became interested in black american music, R&B and soul and it reflected in their solo music yet it is Gabriel who is viewed as the great artist while Phil is seen as a sell out. White progrssive elitism?
here you see Gabriel in semi-make up trasformation, prior to his total imersion into what would be described as shocking, yet what brought about the complete message of their songs...LOL
phil is an ass,and he turned genesis into kiddie pop music....50 year old guys singing juvinile junk embarising..............man but wot a drummer one of the best ever the first couple years after peter left he was alright because he had some humor on stage and he sorta brought them back to earth but after that yeach! like you expected music from a drummer hmmmmm.
Yes you've got to admire Peter's stage presence. However - In my opinion - his vocal range let him down a bit on stage. It's easy to slag off Phil because everyone attributes his vocals to the more commercial songs and Peter sang when they were pumping out the good stuff. That just happened to be the case due to the circumstances. People say it's either Gabriel or Collins years; for me it has always been the Banks years.
I Love PG. But i didn't begin to discover Genesis until wind and wuthering, then back to Trick of the Tail and backwards, forwards and sideways ever since! Lets not compare PG and Phil: that's foolish! on selling england by the pound we have "more fool me" PG and Phil's duet: a beautiful masterpiece! They have each/all had their contributions: and the combinations and singularities are epic! Let's celebrate Tony and Mike and Chester and Steve and Daryl and all they have given us!

@micgelbart I would disagree on Hackett, however The Lamb was itself a huge change from what had gone before (I remember being really shocked the first time I heard it) so God knows where they would have taken the music if they hadnt split. Wind and Wuthering and Trick of the Tail were almost a throwback to Selling England in the mood and instrumentation.
Genesis was never the same after Gabriel´s and Hackett´s departures, but when you take a look at Gabriel and Hackett solo albums (as well as Phil´s) you can´t find nothing similar to Genesis music, wich prooves, to me, that everyone of its members where foundamental and what they did separately does not even compare with what they did as a band. Long live the 69-76 Génesis!

Long live the 69-76 Génesis!
You must remember, Genesis is Tony Banks! He made Peter Gabriel and he made Steve Hackett. From the begining, he is the one who brought it all together. he combined the ingredients to make a great musical recipe. Without him, there is no Genesis. Period!
Sir Elton, like Banks, is a great pianist, but he never came close to writing the music and lyrics that Banks did. No one else comes close. As Barry Sanders is to football, Tony Banks is to Classic Rock!.
@leo50519 - I was always a fan of Tony Banks, but I totally disagree about him making Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett. Compare his solo projects with the others and his body of work doesn't compare. Banks was a master of keeping a melodic stream through everything Genesis wrote which kept it from being random, unrelated pieces of brilliant music. But the guts and the heart & soul of the music came from Hackett and Gabriel. This is why after their departure, Genesis became mainstream.
@maxigonnet Yep, every member gave his own part, Gabriel gave the creative support when he was in the band, but after he left the other members showed they had their own stuff to show too. Anyway, I think that the reason for their solo work is not only how fundamental each member of Genesis was for the band, but that they were not interested at all in simply recreating what they had donde previously. They had (have) enough talent to produce new things, without having to rely on old works.
Beautiful! When you look at Phil Collins, you can see him thinking "One day, this will be a dance band, and I will be it's leader!" Not really, but...
I consider "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" to be their best album, followed by "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering". My favorite songs are Supper's Ready, Entangled, Blood on the Rooftops, I Know What I Like, Lamia, Fly on a Windshield, Mad Man Moon, One for the Vine, 11th Earl of Mar, Musical Box, Fountain of Salmacis. I love most of their other early stuff up to Then There Were Three, then it gets spotty from there.
når vil folk innse at genesis med gabriel og genesis uten er ulike band. get over it. both made fine fine music in their own way. me, i love the early stuff, but time moves on.
Duke may be there best album. People say they lost the "music" when they went commercial. There were songs longer than ten minutes long on their last two albums! Every form of Genesis was amazing. Different, but amazing.
Even Peter Gabriel said that Genesis was much better with Phil Collins in it. His drumming has inspired generations of progressive drummers. Best drummer (and musician) ever!
@josiahlukespencer I'll have to give Duke another listen. It's been years, and I was so bummed out about their changing of the music, I couldn't bear it. Maybe now, decades away, I might find some good stuff in there.
Duke may be there best album. People say they lost the "music" when they went commercial. There were songs longer than ten minutes long on their last two albums! Every form of Genesis was amazing. Different, but amazing.
They did touring in France and Italy during these days; but i don't know much days before 1971 Genesis formations; i only know that; they did join from college in 1967,
and stock until «Trespass»album in 1970 is rare archives that may rehearse later for people who were alive these days to know the bands that went out of the Beatles era and for comprehension of the British rock movements, and next generations of those musicians !
This song is Epic....Saw them live just before they split.
"Buster" Phil Collins split the band. He sang while playing his medioca drums, all through the concert. Everyone watching knew that Genesis was gonna split because of his ego.
He sold out for fame and fortune just as the band was going Mega.
He will never be forgiven for fukin up the greastest band since sliced bread was invented.
"Judas Buster Collins". You made your shit, now lie in it..
@Kristopful I never thought about it that way before, but will consider that theory and research it. Not to doubt your impression at all. Did seem that Phil began going commercial once Steve Hackett left - and then there were three - Gabriel was gone already... But the thing is that so many more people liked Genesis when they went commercial. Me - I'm not a regular commercial music fan. I suspect neither are the other true early Genesis fans, either. Hard for me to dislike Phil or any of them.
I remember being in the college dorms of Eastern Michigan University in 1977 and everyone had their speakers turned up and was listening to Styxx or The Cars- not me- I turned my my Panasonic Reveiver and belted out Supper's Ready on my Ohm D loudspeakers- thinking I was very cool- and looking back- I was.
I was so in love with him when i was a teenager in the mid '70s... I still love him with a passion. He is a passionate soul. Thank you for giving us the great artistic talent that I can use to judge the standards of all creative talents.
Interesante performance de Peter Gabriel. Llamativo ver a Phill Collins en baterìa y coros. Lástima que Genesis después derivara en un grupo pop, sin la fuerza progresiva de sus inicios.
6:44 is an awesome break. Bettr on the CD though. A lot of people say Genesis died when Gabriel left. People have to realize that bands move on and roll with the times.
IMO Duke was the point of no return for the band. I wonder why older Genesis's fans didn't boycott the tour or album's sales. How many songs from their old catalog they played back then on tour?. Was it 50/50? By the time I was old enough to go to their concerts (invisible Touch tour) the only opportunity to listen the classics were with their infamous "medleys" Shit I hated them! I found them very disrespectful to the legacy of the band, and their fans. On what tour did they start playing them?
@vivelavidarocka I think they released "Seconds Out" with many old songs. Also "Three Sides Live", - I ordered the British version bc it had more old songs than USA version. Gabriel had gone solo and Phil fronted - is when the medleys came. My best Genesis concert was seeing them on tour for "Then There Were Three" at a 3/4 empty concert on orange sunshine with my head in the lap of a sweet blonde who looked like Portia de Rossi. We were all united there like "Ecstatic Seraphims on Eternal Tour"
Do not forget Tales From Topographic Ocean or Thick as a Brick... but yes, Genesis is right up there.
Unfortunately, the band was struck by lightning when Gabriel left, survived for a couple of years and passed away when Hackett did the same... But thanks to remastered CDs, bands like The Watch and Musical Box, those geniuses will live for ever
Everybody has their person bail-out point with Genesis. Personally, mine was everything after Abacab....well it would have been, except I loved the band so much I clung on for years after, in retrospect, with ever diminishing returns.
still so pure, in the vain of so few and never to be equalled. it can never be described or explained but when you are alone well..... freak out ethel!!!
My good friend, Kirk, always felt this song was one of the greatest rock songs of all time. I wouldn't go so far as to agree to that, but there is something deeply spiritual, mystical, compelling and moving about this song. I got turned on to progressive rock around 1975, and Genesis (with Peter Gabriel) is still the greatest prog band ever! I saw them live in Houston, TX. in 1976, and Peter had just left the band. It still, without doubt, is the best live show I've ever attended!
Isn't the whole Winston Churchill/plastic bag section missing?

Genesis without PG is like a crayon. Pointless. Without SH it's totally pointless. Phil Collins- what happened to you? Should have stuck to drumming and left your oversize ego at home.

I really love this video--I loved this song in the 70's and never saw it or Genesis in concert then, so this is the 1st time I'm seeing Gabriel singing it, after all these years just hearing it.
GeorgiaDeLaSalle 10 months ago
I will be seeing both Peter Gabriel (with orchestra) and Peter Hammill/Van der Graaf Generator this month!! That will keep me going until Lacrimosa can be persuaded to perform here again.
LordWottWottleigh 10 months ago

Genesis were on of the first bands I saw live when I was about 15, back in the glory days of 70's prog - along with Hawkwind, and Gong, and Van der Graaf Generator...
profbarkingmad 11 months ago
Phil Collins had to give Gabriel the bad news that he'd been sacked for doing too much acid.....shame, eh?
profbarkingmad 11 months ago

White progrssive elitism?

until "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" !
MaxKlimt 1 year ago

As Barry Sanders is to football, Tony Banks is to Classic Rock!.
leo50519 11 months ago
@leo50519 - I was always a fan of Tony Banks, but I totally disagree about him making Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett. Compare his solo projects with the others and his body of work doesn't compare. Banks was a master of keeping a melodic stream through everything Genesis wrote which kept it from being random, unrelated pieces of brilliant music. But the guts and the heart & soul of the music came from Hackett and Gabriel. This is why after their departure, Genesis became mainstream.

@maxigonnet If you like the early Genesis. Check out Anthony Phillips who left because
of stage fright and problems of being dissatisfied with everything. I think his The geese and the ghost
are as good as Hackett, Gabriel solos. After all Phillipps was part of writing The musical box, before he left.
Solo albums from Banks, Collins and Rutherford are, uh, hmm, well, kind of popular i guess.

Best drummer (and musician) ever!
josiahlukespencer 1 year ago
@josiahlukespencer I'll have to give Duke another listen. It's been years, and I was so bummed out about their changing of the music, I couldn't bear it. Maybe now, decades away, I might find some good stuff in there.

Tommygun1028 thanks for great post.!
Kristopful 1 year ago
@Kristopful I never thought about it that way before, but will consider that theory and research it. Not to doubt your impression at all. Did seem that Phil began going commercial once Steve Hackett left - and then there were three - Gabriel was gone already... But the thing is that so many more people liked Genesis when they went commercial. Me - I'm not a regular commercial music fan. I suspect neither are the other true early Genesis fans, either. Hard for me to dislike Phil or any of them.

Interesante performance de Peter Gabriel. Llamativo ver a Phill Collins en baterìa y coros. Lástima que Genesis después derivara en un grupo pop, sin la fuerza progresiva de sus inicios.

On what tour did they start playing them?
vivelavidarocka 1 year ago
@vivelavidarocka I think they released "Seconds Out" with many old songs. Also "Three Sides Live", - I ordered the British version bc it had more old songs than USA version. Gabriel had gone solo and Phil fronted - is when the medleys came. My best Genesis concert was seeing them on tour for "Then There Were Three" at a 3/4 empty concert on orange sunshine with my head in the lap of a sweet blonde who looked like Portia de Rossi. We were all united there like "Ecstatic Seraphims on Eternal Tour"
jeffteach 1 year ago
Do not forget Tales From Topographic Ocean or Thick as a Brick... but yes, Genesis is right up there.
Unfortunately, the band was struck by lightning when Gabriel left, survived for a couple of years and passed away when Hackett did the same... But thanks to remastered CDs, bands like The Watch and Musical Box, those geniuses will live for ever
