Please listen, this was the song that the Nazi's fought to - and was then taken up by the Allies (World War Two - come on - you've heard of it....Hitler..? Right!) and both sides fought and died to it (except the Russians, who had their own songs). Fifty million plus died in the Second World War - so you must have heard of it..? No! Okay, put the TV back on.....
@Snihhora sweden was nutral ww2 but roul wanneberg saved a lot of jews from the God Dam Fucken NAZI'S & THE ARROW CROSS when CCCP LIBERATED HUNGRY ROUL WANNENBERG WAS TAKEN PRISIONER SO HE WAS NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN. AFTER THE SPANISH CIVIL WAR SPAIN WAS NUTURAL. SWITZERLAND WAS NUTURAL AS WELL AS FOR THE PERSON SAID SWEDEN WAS INVOLVED IN THE WAR NO HOCKEY HIM HA HA HA
Marlene Dietrich sang this song and was anti-nazi and helped debunk a lot of nazi propaganda during the war ,and she is synonamous with this song during WW2
This song was liked by soldiers on all sides during WWII. I don't know what you want to say with your comment, but this song has nothing to do with nazism. The original text was written in WWI.
Superb! I was probably living in Morocco when Anita recorded Lili Marleen, and I had no idea. She was the last great star of songs, films, musicals, revues, television, until Social Democrat tax policy forced her to leave Sweden just in order to survive (or pay 102,5% income tax). Her fantastic career ended in a room on the French Riviera where she cares for stray cats, while she could have been the Piaf of Europe. Anita's Lili Marleen is on a par with Lale's, forget about Dietrich!
It sounds like combination of many European languages, doesn't it? At least the last line is English. Anyone can tell how many languages in there? Thanks!
If possible, a lyric of it (this one sung by Anita,not the original one that I have already.)
I encourage love in all it's forms, but I perceive war as a form of mass insanity expressed on a grand scale. Hope that helps to clarify my intent in posing the question.
I love this song about true love during difficult times. I think the most difficult aspect of being seperated from someone is the fear that you'll be forgotten.
I never sent the comment attributed to me...but anyway, it was first sung by Lale Anderson (a German Danish woman) right before the Second World War.
The Germans adopted it and it became a propaganda weapon, at one time they broadcast it every twenty minutes over a Belgrade radio station.
It was adopted by the the British in the Western Desert (North Africa) and then Lili Marlene sang it.
It was very popular on all sides because it was a good song and carried no overt propaganda message...

@struanrobertson1606 LIli Marlene is the name of the song, not the artist singing it after Lale Anderson. That was Marlene Dietrich.

Such a lovely song and such a lovely voice. My dear late grandmother used to play this song for me on the piano. Thank you for posting this.

Bortset fra Lale Andersen er der kun Anita Lindblom, der får sangen til at lyde af noget stort

HuggableAngel posted verse 1; here's #2:
Time would come for roll call, Time for us to part;
Darling I'd caress you and press you to my heart;
And there 'neath that far off lantern light,
I'd hold you tight, We'd kiss good-night;
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.
dancegypsy 4 years ago
#3:
Orders came for sailing somewhere over there,
All confined to barracks was more than I could bear;
I knew you were waiting in the street,
I heard your feet, But could not meet,
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.
dancegypsy 4 years ago
#4:
Resting in a billet, just behind the line,
Even tho'we're parted, your lips are close to mine.
You wait where that lantern softly gleams.
Your sweet face seems to haunt my dreams.
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.

Underneath the lantern, by the barrack gate,
Darling I remember the way you used to wait.
'Twas there that you whispered tenderly,
That you loved me, You'd always be,
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.
((((HUG)))) loved it
