I also saw a film of Kirill Petrenko and Lars Vogt in conversation with Sarah Willis (a horn player of the orchestra). Somehow, Lars Vogt's image in that interview looks better, softer, more handsome, more engaging and more acceptable to me. But in this concerto, a bit fierce looks were exhibited which may drive people away in some way
I really liked this. Very clean playing, and the mood is high energy & driving forward, with no doubts. Very pure playing. I Liked it better than Zimerman's version. Yes, I know, it's all subjective.
I would like to note that there's a difference between strict and rigid interpretation. Alfred Brendel's intepretations of this this concerto are strict but not rigid (listen to him with Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra). Vogt is faithful to the score but in such unimaginative way. His glossy sounds and flat inexpressive trills don't realize Beethoven's original thoughts to my ears.
I have nothing against a strict interpretation of the piece. If Beethoven intended for the piece to sound like Vogt's rendition then here's to Vogt for bringing Beethoven's original thoughts to our hears.
I cannot understand how does Lars Vogt allow himself to deliver such a rigid and unimaginative interpretation (and it was not the first time he disappoints). I marvel how Vogt is Sir Simon's favourite pianist. Go watch Perahia's Beethoven 4th excerpt from last season and get the difference. Shame on B-Phil choice of soloists, though i appreciate Sir Simon's music making.
Although I admire Albrecht Mayer's playing (being an oboist myself), it would be really unfair for me to just brag on him. Each of these performers is just too amazing to not mention.
Another great performance from the Berliner Philharmoniker!
