Love fedorov and all the russian 5 back in the day but when he left to go to anaheim for less money he turned his back on detroit. He couldn't handle being second banana to stevie y
The Wings were playing somewhere out of town. Detroit went on the power play. This was in like '97. Scott Bowman put the Russian 5 out on the power play. They gained control of the puck and went to work. There was about 7 tape-to-tape pinpoint passes and a goal scored. And, I will never forget this, the opposition announcer said, "Did we just see that?" Yeah, it was amazing, but they did it pretty regular. That is the ultimate compliment to these 5.
@karkkipussi1000 The difference from your American friends (Russian Five) that they are dead traitors. Kharlamov was fighting for the Soviets. And did not betray his country. And this scum had not allowed into Russia. Let this shit would stay in your shitty "Detoylet." They do not RUSSIAN five. Russian Five is - Kharlamov, Petrov, Mikhailov, Maltsev, Vasiliev. @PHDLUV8 This guy has no idea what the hell he is talking about. I'm Russian and I don't feel disdain or consider them traitors. As a matter of fact, I don't know ANYONE in Russia who considers them traitors. They are people, who saw an upportunity to earn more by playing abroad. PERIOD. They didn't sell out government secrets. They are hockey players and they chose what would allow them to realise their potential. And they fucking did just that. sports always has a lot of "what ifs". but the vladdy accident is the worst. no telling how many cups the wings would've won. nor what a career he would have had. no, he won't be forgotten.
fedorov never looked more handsome on the ice than when he was wearing a red wings jersey. and i'm not even a wings fan :s i wish they'd pick him up for one last stint.
@USMCRedneck71 funny how modern Russian stars aren't ''ovs"... Malkin, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk, Semin.... ins and uks... ok, YakupOV will be next probably
Definitely. You couldn't take the puck away from them. They were incredible. They are what turned the Detroit Red Wings franchise around. Not to mention having a great captain in Steve Yzerman.
Haha I kno rite? But me personally, along with Howe/Yzerman I have always thought Fedorov was the best player to wear the Winged Wheel. Zetterberg n Datsyuk are getting there as well IMO.
And Lidstrom has already proven to be one of the greatest, just I feel not as great as Fedorov, Howe or Yzerman were/are.
This just proves that Europeon hockey players have the most talent. I would rather have a team full of europeons then a team full of canadians. (CAPS FAN SINCE 97) and I was born in bulgaria but came to the U.S at age 4 in 93, so thats part of the reason why i love europeons more, cause i am one
@ApachePiL0T Detroit will always love Vladdie!! I named my cat after him and he's a BEAST, just like his namesake, lol! I loooooooooove the "RUSSIAN 5", baby!!
Thanks for the video, i have looked for a video like this for a while. The greatest five. Vladdy will always be remembered by the wings, even after his accident.
did you heard about the swedish five I do believe that Vancouver had sundin to play with the 2 sedin's that made 3 and then Matias ohlund and edler on the point.
washington caps need one more russian to complete another russian 5 they have so far ovechkin, semin, fedorov, kozlov just need one more then that will do the trick.
Konstantinov was a beast, very influential in games. I believe if he had not been injured in an auto accident, he would have gained Scott Stevens type respect league wide, (if he hadn't already). The Redwings always seem to draft talented, thoughtful players. The Redwings could very well repeat in 2008-2009.
it was not actually soviet union you know they said this was in the 95 when the Russian five was complete. The soviet union fell in 1991 so its more correct to call them Russia.
Larionov, Konstantinov, Fetisov, Federov, Koslov, God these guys were awsome i miss watching the russian 5 play and i miss yserman and god PROBERT he was a terror on the ice
Well in the Olympics Sweden had Zetterberg, Samuelsson, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, and Kronwall on a line. In the gold medal game all 4 goals were scored by Redwings haha
i know its not really fair because hes only around 40 and probably still can play hockey if he has not been in that car accident. Same with Pavel Bure too his career been cut short due to injuries.
When you try to diminish the contributions of other on those championship Wings teams it is a pretty good indication that you can't prove your point by illustating Stevie's merits. Federov carried the selfish Number 19 from 91 to the end of his time in Detroit. During that time, Stevie allowed people to heap praise on him while Federov toiled in the shadows. An unselfish person would have shared the limelight. Stevie was always about Stevie and nobody else.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Get serious, there wasn't anybody else on the team that had the skill set to be able to do it. There isn't a player in the league that would like to do it because it hurts their capacity to put up numbers. In the real world, a players offensive numbers is what dictates their contract. Federov is just another player from those championship teams that did not get enough attention due to Stevie's selfishness. A real leader would spread attention to his teammates... but not Stevie... selfish.
I agree -- one of the great what-ifs of hockey, wondering how many Norris Trophies he would have won by now. Either that, or he could have easily become an actor to play a villain in a James Bond movie...
ur a fuckin moron, they were ready to trade him in 92 and 93,,,, he was the captain for his skills on and off the ice, i've been a wings fan as long as i can remember, when they were the "dead wings", you dont know what ur talkin about, shhhhhh
Actually, the trade talks really started to get hot when the Wings lost to the Av's in 96. Bowman felt that the team had plateaued with Stevie as the leader because of his declining play and relationship with the owners. The power struggle between Bowman and the owners was settled when it was agreed that the team would work towards bringing in another leader who had the fire that Stevie lacked. That leader was Brendan Shanahan and it was he who set the tone against the Avs, not Stevie.
you've never been more wrong,,, i cant believe ur tryin to pass this off as truth, check the stats jack-ass,,,, stevie was a huge impact, what you fail to realize is this, you dont have to be the leading points man to be the most dominent player in the league, there aint a hockey player out there that will argue stevie was one of the best to play the game,,,, and look at what happened over the next five to six seasons, ur a moron, shhhhh
Stevie was a good little player but the movement to anoint him the ultimate leader is foolish and revisionist in nature. Stevie was a nice guy and that's why he lasted in the league and with the Wings for so long. Wings fans are unable to assess Stevie's leadership abilities because they have been bombarded with media telling them a partial truth. People are unable to move beyond the sentiment for Number 19 and that is why they are unable to accept my controversial but fair assessment.
ur dumb, i tired of trying to explain to you how wrong you are, its not what the media says for gods sake, its the olympic teams, the all star teams, and many many hockey player throughout the league have said these things about him, opponents, coaches,,, you think what you want, and downplay stevie, ok, facts are facts, and ur statements are an opinion,,
Actually, it is your assessment that is only an opinion. My conclusion that Stevie was not a great leader is one that is built on sound, logical reason. I am the only one on this post who can distance myself from my childhood affections and rationally determine through inspection of the record that Stevie's achievments are built on misplaced hero worship. The record clearly shows that the only time the Wings were successful was when the leadership burden was shared. Stevie's overrated.
ok, i guess you know more about hockey than i do,(not really) you know more about detroit red wings than i do (not at all) and are just all around mr know it all when it comes to everything in life (i doubt it)
I guess you are able to search wikipedia, like everyone else. My knowledge comes from watching the games on TV and in the stands. My understanding of the game comes from the fact that I think for myself and allow the results one the ice to form my opinions. I don't allow fluff coverage to form my opinions for me. Part of being an adult is realizing that the common consensus can be wrong and that a discerning opinion, that is logically sound, is often more relevant and fair... puppet.
It's hard to know, a lot of the time you saw in Fedorov what you see in Datsyuk: when he wanted to score, there wasn't a goddamned thing the other team could do to stop him.
I guess he just didn't want to score often enough.
Bowman placed a lot of defensive responcibility on Federov and that impacted his offensive numbers. If the reins had been taken off of him he may have produced like Guy Lafleur. However, he didn't have the same ability to finish like Bure and Mogilny so it is likely that Bowman used him properly. Instead of winning more Harts he was caste in the role similar to that of Jacques Lemaire.
There you go pup... there's another great analysis by the brightest thinker on Youtube.
it was great watchin these guys the passin and the chemistry was beautiful... i just didt like it wen they did it to toronto lol dont think there will ever be a five like that again
I totally agree with you bout Konstantinov, my fave Red Wing, period. But I don´t know if Fedorov still has that fire to put up all these tricks and moves. To me he seems burnt out.
I miss Konstantinov, he'd probably still be playing on the Wings if it wasn't for that dumbfuck limo driver...pisses me off each time I think about it...and Fedorov needs to come back, I miss him on the Wings!
Awsome vid!! :) gosh i miss konstantinov, will always remeber the good days with him infront of osgood/vernon ;)
Been trying to find a vid when bowman retire after the stanley cup titel, and konstantinov is there in his wheelchair. if you have it/find it here, please send me a tell.

We should grab fedorov before trade dateline. He is still a beast, he just needs to be a Red Wing again.

i'm a red wings fan, but theres now way we need fedorov back, he was a great player, but he never played up to his potential, and now he's washed up.

Konstantinov was the best thing going at this point. 6 foot, 180 lbs. & tough as nails.
seanbonjovi7 4 years ago 2
6ft and 180lbs is not a big guy...he had to weigh more than that
grafs707 4 years ago
I totally agree with you bout Konstantinov, my fave Red Wing, period. But I don´t know if Fedorov still has that fire to put up all these tricks and moves. To me he seems burnt out.

I miss Konstantinov, he'd probably still be playing on the Wings if it wasn't for that dumbfuck limo driver...pisses me off each time I think about it...and Fedorov needs to come back, I miss him on the Wings!
