im 14 and im playing this for 8th grade. i love the piece.
one of the hardest pieces ive evr played. omg i hate it and love it at the same time... if you know what i mean. like those lip flexibility things are ridiculous and the odd intervals throw u sometimes. good job to you was that at the ITG in sydney? i reconise the backdrop
Yeah, I agree with BachStrad95. Definitely not a bad performance at all, but the tempo kept the music from coming across in some spots. Even though I shy away from Wynton's tempos on some stuff, the tempo he takes on his recording of this is perfect (as is his articulation, dynamics, and intonation!) Phil Smith's recording of this is a great place to start also! Trust me though, these comments are meant to be very modest critiques over what was a very solid performance of a very hard movement.
I like how you know what you want to do and feel in this piece. Tomasi is relentless, especially with Trumpet players like us. Really take your time and know your intervals. What my professor Eric Berlin tells us, Sing, Buzz, Play. If you can't Sing or Buzz it, don't bother playing it yet. You've got a great feel, and I agree with mitrompeta, the tempo was just a little too fast to keep up with. Keep working on it. All in all I would give it a solid B+/A- performance.
But still I think, the tempo is still a bit high for you, shame, because i can hear you can play it very well, it just becomes a bit sloppy here and there.
And please, remember, Tomasi was a FRENCH composer, this a very American interpretation, i'd recommend listening more to Maurice André or Eric Aubier for grasping the right feeling of style.
Nevertheless, awesome job! I played this piece myself not long ago, and I know how difficult it really is!
I've recently been getting back into to Antonsen myself! Have you checked out his recording of the Gregson trumpet concerto he put out not long ago? It's fantastic!

Thanks!
I will definitely try to find a recording of Maurice or Eric. I only have recordings of Phil Smith, Ole Edvard Antonsen and Marsalis.
And, yeah........it was a little too fast!!!
Thanks again!
