The "yarn Winder" Appears to be a Center Pull Ball Winder. The nail was probably a hook to guide the yarn from a skein to the porcelain the yarn most likely ran between the center wood thing and was attached to the pin on the crank side. the yarn was not let within 1 inch of the non drive side so you could remove the spindle to remove the yarn in a center pull ball.
The shaft on the top with a gear on one end is the center shaft for a missing 4-post warping-like reel. My reel contained about 1/2 inch thickness of (rotting) finely spun silk single. What's missing appears to be a part that would guide the thread onto the reel, with one end resting in the v-shaped groove below. I used mine as a prize at a spinning guild retreat so this is all from memory. Hope this helps.
The sharp edges and stain indicate that its not very old. Also lack of wear on the cogs point to it not have been used much if at all. Maybe it was built for something but didn't work.

I've been too busy to blink! But good. Can't wait for this damn winter to be over. We had nearly 20" of snow on Monday, but it's supposed to be almost 60 degrees tomorrow! Welcome to the fifth season... the mud season! How are you and Jill and the kids?
Cool that Becca moved back home. One more dog to the mix then? :-) How is Jill's mom doing? We might have to postpone the casino trip until we get our tax return back, things are tight, tight tight! No one at the bank got raises this year, but at least everyone still has jobs. It sucked though because this was our branches best year ever, we beat all our sales goals by a mile...then no reward. it was kind of depressing, but a sign of the economy, I guess. Jake is doing great! A very good dog!

Nope, I tried to find out from the seller but they had no clue, they were antiques sellers and called it a "yarn winder" but that was it for their knowledge. Besides, I've had it for 3 or 4 years and just now, since we are in the new house, have I been able to get it out and really look at it.
Most things I like to do, spinning, weaving, knitting, e.g, would drive most over the edge! LOL
well.. does the yarn feed up from the large porcelain knob uwpward or does the yarn feed downward?
If it feeds upward, it may be a spool feeder... the curves make the yard/thread go back and forth (passing it back and forth on the spool evenly)... otherway, I dunno.
LOL, I do that sort of thing all the time! It is a really cool antique if nothing else. It looks great just sitting there in my yarn/craft/sewing/fabricology studio. ;-)
This tool is a Zakuri. Japanese silk reeler. It appears to be missing the reel/srmed spool.

We are all good..Becca moved back home, Bobby is home till this weekend..so lots of family time..:)
We made a trip to the casino last night..we did OK..lost some money, then won it back and decided to come home..:)
