I am sorry , your information is not correct. In Punjabi, Jugnu means male firefly. Jugni means female firefly. It flies( comes out) only in nights mostly in the places where there is vegetation - especially during the summer in the fields. The underneath of its wings is membrane with a phosphorus based material which shines when it stretches it and makes contact with air during. Its wings flicker with light as it flies. That attracts other insects which become its pray(food).(continue 2)

This a very common sight at night in the green fields of rural Punjab during summer and during the Fall season. City folks may not be aware of it. The term Jugni definitely was introduced in poetry by Manda and Bishna by seeing the "jubilee flame" celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The flame was carried from place to place  (city to city ) in a gold vessel which had holes in it.

To Manda and Bishna ,this gave the impression of light flickering as if do dozens of Jugnus are there. They called this Jubilee flame in the perforated vessel as Jugni. Where ever the jubilee flame went, there would be official celebration and crowd will gather. Manda and Bishna seeing it as opportunity to make some money would also set up there stall in the same city and sing " Jugni" verses that they made -- quite often mocking the official celebrations. With time they became more popular

with the common people who came to the city for celebration and started to attract larger gathering . Sadly, they paid for mocking the Jubilee celebration with their lives. The Jugni style of poetry became very popular in villages of Majha area and the surrounding districts. There are hundreds of verses, written especially during 1920s and 1930s. They were mostly of "underground" nature. Alam Lohar seemsed to to have picked up from that. (continued to 4)

Jugni is a fictitious women created by Punjabi Poets. Word Jugni means "female firefly" She is supposed to be continually traveling. The poets generally describe what she saw at various places and make their comments in poetry. Poetry associated with Jugni ranges from a very thought provoking poems to outright her sexual adventures. In this song only the first section comes to the Jugni genre' Rest of the sections are in style of Punjabi Folk songs

Jugni poetry was actually created by a team two Punjabi folk singers around 1906 (over one hundred years ago). They used to perform together. Their names are Manda from Amritsar District ( a Muslim Marasi -- a village bard) and Bishna ( Bishan Singh - a Jatt also from Amritsar District). The versification was very simple - mostly associated with a city and about what was happening in that city. Later It developed into a satire of British Rule and anti British It stayed underground till 1947.

Jugni is originally a Punjabi song created by Alam Lohar (Late) of Pakistan.

The true meaning was about spirituality, probably with some sufi link.

However it has since been re porduced by some Indian Punjabi artists and sung as if it was about a girl.
