@memolovesvero there are easy to use settings like Handheld Twilight that makes it easy to capture pictuers like this in low light. It's quite extraordinary, really. I'm an amateur and I can get great shots!

@KMcraeMusic A couple of things... mostly adjusting the aperture for short focal length and a lens designed for that - like a portrait or macro lens.

@vorticusFJ You need to have the scene. In other words, be where the sky looks like that. I live inside city limits, so it's impossible to take pics of the stars, but I can manage to take great pics of the downtown buildings along with the night clouds fantastic. Depends on where you live: city, urban, rural areas, etc.

@vorticusFJ set the ISO to a higher setting like 800 or `600. You will have to experiment a bit to get the perfect shot.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but regarding the title... technically, the NEX series is NOT "dslr".

Still a great camera, I don't have one yet... But I've got 3 Sony dSLR's... I may get one of these for general walk-around stuff.

also the 5 has a different grip and is made of metal. The grip was the deciding factor for me.

@thatgonzalezgirl And NEX-5 has magnesium alloy body... NEX-3 is plastic. NEX-5's grip is chunkier than NEX-3 - worh considering if you have big hands!

@thatgonzalezgirl also the camera button layouts are a bit different. the nex-5 has a shutter closer to the front of the camera and makes it feel more slr-like. the nex-3 has the button more on top and feels more like a point and shoot. and the nex-5 is made out of a different metal - less plastic than the nex-3

@ltum2 I don't have any first hand experience with that, but I have seen the video that others have shot and it is beautiful too. Unfortunately, I don't know the difference between capturing with one vs. the other. I did see our professional version which is the NEX-FS100 for $6k. Amazing! AND our other new pro camera the PMW-F3 which is $16k and has more robust editing flexibility...

I knew about shooting with available light for ages. Since I started taking photos at age 15, I avoid flash as much as I can. Flash just kills the whole mood.

This vid is a bit deceiving if you watch carefully.. But it's true that the NEX has got great potential.. Currently, there's nothing special about the available e-mount lenses.. Best way to describe them is SOFT.. The camera captures good low-light photos though.. I'll have to pass with this one..

The video shows the camera shooting at f/1.4, however, sony doesn't make an e-mount lens in 1.4... They must be using an adapter for these low light shots. This camera has great potential because of its large image sensor, if it only had some 1.4 or 1.8 lens options, I'd buy it yesterday.

@BostonSeanSean that's not the lens stetting... it's the aperture setting on the camera.

BostonSeanSean wanted to say that sony doesnt have an e-mount lens able to have an aperture of f/1.4. If you see a setting of 1.4 on the nex-5, that means that this is not sony lens ! ;)
