The M3 may have a high revving inline-6, but the 4.2 litre V8 of the S4 is smooth and the power delivery comes at lower rpm's with a huge torque advantage. Plus, you can't beat the mellow burble of the V8 in the Audi. Additionaly, the SMG is terribly jerky and the Audi can be driven year round thanks to quattro. The M3 might be great 6 months out of a year, but is cannot match the s4's all around driving excellence; plus, the S4 was quicker around Top Gear's test track.

The e9X m3 vs the new rs4 is a fair match, but the e9X m3 is brand new. a match between e46 m3 and the new rs4 wouldnt be fair.
