Well, it doesn't come across that well, you have to read between the lines, but the thing about Edward is that he is very much a self-loathing creature. He has trouble distinguishing between who he is and what he is. Because it's in Bella's POV, we only see how she sees him-beautiful and kind and amazing, her hero. But Edward thinks of himself as a monster, and not worth an ounce of Bella's time.

Yeah, yesterday I read the scene when Edward left Bella (again, probably the 6th or 7th time) I wasn't just crying, I was really sobbing. I hate that scene because Edward is being such an idiot.
