Thank you for the video!! I am interviewing in 11 hours for an excavation company in northern PA working in the gas well industry and feel more comfortable after watching your video to remind me about the controls incase they want me to hop on some equipment before deciding on hiring me or not!! Lol thanks so much for posting!!!
scoobeedu - Depends what kind of work you are doing with an excavator. I have operated excavators for the last 20years and find the smaller they are the more technical the work gets with them. Generally bigger machines do alot of bulking out ie: just moving alot of product earth, coal, ore etc. I am operating an 8 tonner at the moment and working on a new port facilty. On the smaller machines you tend to be more involved with final trim work and undergroung service infrastructure. I enjoy !
there are two major type of controls... the controls you are useing are call SAE or atleast thats what we call them here... the other type is ISO, which switches the right and left forward and back controls.. like.. SAE you control the boom with your right hand... with ISO its with your left hand... SAE is what I learned.. good video...
Thanks so much for this very informative video . Ive always wondered how they work .Looks like quite a fun job.Ide love a job where i can siit down .Easy on the back! Is it enjoyable to do all day?
@loneseerious, the reason why that happen is because he has the Cab of the excavator backwards...the cab can rotate a full 360 degrees, so that means that he was 180 degrees from the front.
john deere controls i can run cat controls and johndeere controls but i can run cat better but good john on teaching great demo to all the people who want to learn how
@RATHAHONNI Thanks for writing! I am only familiar with these controls. Not all machines have the same controls. Read down through the comments and you'll see some other people's input which is very helpful. Also note that things work a little differently when the machine is turned around forward (as mentioned in someone's comment below).
@RATHAHONNI ,Thanks for the reply,i figured it out that the cab must be backward when u had to push the control to move backwards and vice versa. Also i make videos and it would be beneficial to, as u explain the control for the short arm to show it's operation from outside the machine.
Well there are different settings for excavators Such as Caterpillar, Deere, Hitachi, Daewoo (Shit), Link belt, Case, Terex, And much more, They all have the different settings on a circular key in the engine compartment, Like this Operator said hes only familar with these controls, But if he ever ran a caterpillar he can change the controls to the Link-Belt setting
As far a i know 3, EURO is what you see in th movie, here in europe common to.
FUCHS (Russian controls i did that for 8 years) everything is turned around. E.g : here in vid left righ turret, same lever but then push pull , and left right to use the bucket on that stick ehehehe ...
then you had O&K i cannot even remember that one...the worst part, now i use EURO again took some time to get that russian system out of me.
@RATHAHONNI basically yes... there are 2 types of controls for excavators, they are commonly known as Cat controls or John Deere controls, the excavator in this vide is running Cat controls. In a John Deere the right joystick controls the stick and the bucket while the left one controls swing and the boom (the boom is the part of the arm connected too the machine and the stick is the part connected to the bucket and the thumb)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i hope u dont drive that 4 a living.
its not a TURRET.and it aint a short arm its callesd the dipper arm and the 1 u called a big arm is the boom. and most 360 drivers call the hyd cylinder a ram.
Well, I did state that the video was made for kids. And if I used jargon instead of words a child would understand, it wouldn't make sense to them.
Nonetheless, in spite of your arrogance, your point is well taken, and I should have used the proper jargon and defined the jargon with an explanation.
You should also bear in mind that terminology in different countries is often different (like hood=bonnet in England).
Oh, and since you dislike Americans so much, GET OFF OUR YOUTUBE!
Well u cant hot wire one but they are easily stolen because if u have a cat key then u can drive any cat machine or a deere key can operate any deere or hitachi machine. Sane for case. they all have the same key for their brand.
This a graet basic how to clip. When you are digging it is very important to place the drive motors behind you so when thn bucket gets close to the tracks it will only hit the tracks but not the drive motors. I have heard a story about a "operator" riuning a drive motor when the tooth of the bucket came out of the ground and caught the motor housing.
I have only used Linkbelt, so I don't have anything to compare them to. I have a friend who picked up a soda can with this excavator (something I sure can't do!) so I'm guessing the equipment is good but the operator's skill is more important.
Dragline is right. I did it just for those people who may be curious. Almost every male child is fascinated by heavy equipment, but few ever have the opportunity to see how it works from the point of view of the operator.
I've been very pleased at how many people have expressed their gratitude.
honestly i have operated quite a few machines before starting the program and i can say that the thing is John deere excavators and bachoes may have different controls. compared to cat and others. keep that in mind. i like the deere controls better
cool video. question. how come you have to pull the levers back to go forward and push the levers forward to go backwards. are all escavators like that. couldnt you just turn the cab around and it would be opposite
Yea it's like that, the only way to tell which way your going to move is to have your walking motors behind you then the controls are correct,,sticks forward to go forward but if your walkin motors are in front of you then yes they will be backward pull the sticks to you to go forward...I always look down at the inside of my tracks, and the motors have a bolted on cover that will tell you if they are in front of you or behind you.
I personally like standard excavator controls but I've only ran backhoes with the "retro" four stick case controls.. Although not as comfortable as probaly the joy sticks like they usually have in some other machines..
awesome video! i'm going to school for this in the fall and i'm really excited. i will be learning how to operate one of these rigs soon. thank you for the video.
If you like this video, make sure you do a youtube search for Yellow Metal TV and make sure to go check out the website. It's awesome for anyone into heavy equipment...
you shoulve turned the cab around to teach the turning and also turn a little bit and tilt the machine up to do an easier turn so you dont tear up a bunch of earth
theres also another pattern where the boom and stick are switched. (left joystick is swing and boom. right is bucket and stick) Im not too sure but i think this pattern is more common. Some machine have a lever to switch between the two patterns. Nice video
His excavator's on Cat (SAE?)controls. You're thinking of John Deere style. I'm not entirely certain myself, but I heard that the John Deere style is more popular in Asia (?). Where I live, almost all track excavators are on Cat controls, and many of the rubber tire backhoes are also, with fewer of them on John Deere style than I remember in the past.
I have no preference, unless I'm in a machine with no track pedals. Then I prefer CAT style, with the swing and stick on the same control.
I guess a majority of our machines in my area(nj) are "john deere style" as ive never used the other pattern. case,jd,kubota, jcb, and bobcat all were the same
As i've just said in my other comment here, in the UK it's really Cat pattern on an excavator, JD on a backhoe. There are variations though. On JCB backhoes the JD pattern is used but with the levers moving on the diagonal x and not cross +. That's standard in the UK but you can specify a different pattern if you wish.
With pilot controls on backhoes i think the Cat pattern is more popular.
I actually have met a few operators (usually about 20 years older than me) who still prefer Case controls, with four standard levers, instead of joysticks. One operator told me that he had ordered (or was going to order) a new machine with the retro Case controls.
I remember seeing an old, abandoned excavator (I think it was a Hi Hoe), that must have had six or more levers in the front of the cab. The thing looked like it was from the '70s or maybe '60s. It was just rusting away on a hill side.
I ran a Hitachi EX120 about 14 years ago that had the stick and swing on the left, but to move the stick in and out you had to move the lever to the left and right. To swing left and right the lever needed to be moved backwards and forwards. I ran it for a couple of years, the pattern just seemed normal to me.
I think there are also some other very odd patterns about in other parts of the world.
There are other variations to the two patterns mentioned here aswell.
In the UK though the standard (most popular) pattern on a tracked or wheeled 360 degree excavator is the Cat (ISO?) pattern. Swing and stick on the left hand lever, boom and bucket on the right.
On a backhoe 180 degree excavator, the more popular pattern is boom and swing on the left hand lever, stick and bucket on the right. But the cat pattern is being used more with pilot controls on backhoes becoming more popular.
very helpful, i just got put on the permit board this morning and this video helped my search for understand the equipment
