@lateralus462 how many songs does brand new even cover? remember this is just jesse lacey playing one of his favorite songs and it's not even garbage... if you listen to tool and neutral milk hotel how can you be this oblivious?
I respect Jesse Lacey for admiration Neutral Milk Hotel but his covers lack the power and beautiful inconsistency of Mangum's voice which is why no emulation will ever match NMH. Despite the flaws, the cover is done reverently and I appreciate Jesse publicizing this amazing to a new crowd. I'm not one of those Indie freaks who doesn't want certain people listening to my type of music. I rather have people become more openminded through the genres and subgenres of indie and, for E6, psych folk.
I understand what you're saying and to a point I agree, but I really think Jesse's voice has a certain emotion that fits this song extremely well. I love the original version, and I also like that this version is a bit different to fit a Brand New kind of style, instead of Jesse trying to copy NMH's unique vocals and emotion.
i think he sounds a lot like jeff mangum while he sings these. perhaps with less emotion ("perhaps" meaning "definitely" in this case) but still well done.
i too agree with most of what you said. however, i disagree with the stereotype a lot of people put on brand new fans. we are not a "new crowd". we listen to morrissey, nmh, modest mouse, animal collective, radiohead, etc.
a large portion of us are indie kids like yourself. we just like the heavier stuff a bit more than your average indie kids.
you completely fucking contradicted yourself saying you disagree with a stereotype and then proceeding to tell john doe precisely what us brand new fans listen to.
i listen to the cure, dixie chicks, third eye blind, the ramones, tegan and sara, ra ra riot....
he even sings the line "nineteen fourty and five" instead of "i'll love you for the rest of your life," which was the original version Jeff wrote but was not recorded that way on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
correct, though i wouldnt call it the original, merely the "in the works" version. i like the jittery joes performance out of all his stuff thats here on youtube.
I was referring to one of the NY shows being strict with cameras. BottleTree was super cool and chill. I do remember, though, when Jesse told people to stop filming because he wanted to see their faces.
And I wish I could come back to BottleTree, but unfortunately, I live no where near close to that area. Haha.
haha at alabny the security gaurd was sitting on the stage next to me and goes your not supossed to take pictures and i was like im taking a video and hes like okay. which i woulda fought him about if he said anything since i got jesse to play brothers and i wasnt gonna not tape it
jesse lacey wouldn't cover a song he couldn't do any justice.
this is beautiful, i'm desperate for a solo album.

This crowd is awesome. They shut the hell up and let the half-human half-god play his fantastic music so everyone can hear it.

I like both these bands and this actually isn't half bad.

I never really liked Jeff Mangum's voice in alot of NMH songs. It's better soft in songs like Communist Daughter.
And Brand New does kinda ruin every song they cover.
So yeah, theyre both good bands, but people need to stop acting like either of them are perfect cause they both have plenty of flaws.

This is garbage. Brand New ruins any sony they cover, especially if it's NMH.

He just needs to have one concert where he plays all of Aeroplane Over the Sea.

To get it out of his system, you jackass.

eh, i wouldn't mind that. i'd rather mangum just hurry up and start playing more often.

that isn't true at all. most brand new fans will be listening to stuff like taking back sunday, thursday, thrice etc.

That was at the Poughkeepsie show, where people literally got wrestled to the ground if they put their cameras in the air... that might be why :-)

Yeah, they were also REALLY strict about cameras that night. Did everything short of a full cavity search (at least for my group of friends).
