I've never tried a crab cake, because they're always so expensive at restaurants and they usually serve you these tiny quarter sized portions. But now that I know how to make them, I'm definitely going to try them! BTW you guys are great, thanks for all the great recipes!
@GummyTumor I know that in college at the summer ArtsFest, there was a stand that made no-filler crabcakes for five dollars and they were pretty big. They got away with the price because of how stinkin popular the stand was. I think it's usually a matter of accessibility. Crab cakes in Maryland and Alaska will be a lot cheaper than crab cakes in the UK or middle USA.
i made this, it was sooo good. my sister could not stop eating them. only suggestion to those who try. that potato looks pretty big but you only need one regular sized potato and i used canned crab. doused them with some lemon juice and success!
@LIVELISTENLAUGHLOVE In the US (and probably elsewhere) cilantro refers to the leaves of the plant, whereas coriander refers to the seeds. In the UK, we use the same name for both... simply coriander seeds and fresh coriander. Hope that helps?
I am from Maryland too and we do have THE best steamed crab and crab cakes in the world. I am sure this recipe is very good too, but it is definitely not a Maryland crab cake. The ones we have use lump crab meat, mayonnaise, eggs, crushed crackers (saltine or Ritz), Old Bay seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon and/or dry mustard, and parsley. Maybe add a squeeze of lemon juice if you like. Fry it up a couple of minutes on each side. A good crab cake doesn't need a sauce!
@saashena I think you can, but I'd say switch out the flour for some bread crumbs to get the crispy coating. I'm not sure what the temperature for the oven should be though.
Great job! This looks really good. Is fresh crab better than canned or do they both have the same taste? Its so strange, I never knew there was a such thing as canned crab til I saw you using it,lol.
@2PurpleStars6 nothing beats fresh crab if you can get it... use the white meat for this recipe. But tinned is pretty good, a lot more accessible (in the UK anyway) and cheaper.
I was born in Maryland! My mum used to bring me to her favorite sea food restaurant and give me bits of her crab cakes! Only seafood that wouldn't end up on her shoulder or my lap later xD
i've been watching these videos for the past i-don't-know-how-many hours, and since i have no kitchen available, i've had to settle for 2 minute noodles. this makes me so sad coz i now feel like a pro chef just watching you guys ;-;
If you can swing it though, guys, the best crab cakes, in my opinion, use the least binder, but that also means it will be more expensive. Traditionally, you use saltine crackers for the binder, as they are drier and will suck up and retain the crab juices. But I will give you guys credit, you managed to blend PA chicken croquettes and MD crab cakes into one recipe.
@wenceefoo You probably could but it won't taste at all the same. They used canned crab meat, and to be honest, I'd look for that first. But also, this recipe is also a good basis if you switch the crab out for canned tuna or salmon for a good fish cake.
I'm from the UK but leave in maryland right now and the crab dishes are unbelievably good here. They make a cheesy crab dip. Do you think you could do a recipe like that?
@casi198920 I've had really good crab dip as well, but most of the time it's a cream cheese base with a lot of crab meat and spices. One of the best I ever had was from a restaurant in college, and they made some killer crap dip with white wine and crab and so much other stuff that it was divine.
im actually from Maryland and worked in a sea food restaurant when i got out of college. One of the things thats really popular is adding bread crumbs, i would think that be like a good replacement for the mash potato
i was just very recently introduced to this wonderful channel and im so happy i was. instead of doing my hw i decided to watch quite a few of the vids. i decided to make the crab cakes 2nite for dinner for my mom and i and it turned out wonderfully! i love crab but ive never had crab cakes before, so im feeling pretty satisfied right now. im gonna make the chocolate cake in a mug pretty soon :] thanks for all the recipes!

@Emmaisanerdfighter Fresh crab is amazing! I'm very jealous of you in Maryland! But this recipe means people can try to make them much easier and cheaper. Relatively classy but with a few cheeky cheats and shortcuts!
@sortedfood i'm from Hong Kong, lots of fresh seafood here. if i'm going to use fresh crabs, which part should i use? the muscly arms of it? should i chop it into small pieces, or put the whole thumb-sized crab meat into the cake? one last thing, should i cook the crab first or cook it INSIDE the cake? thanks a lot, mate :)
@timothychiu6 It's the white crab meat you want, not the brown. If you have the option then certainly keep the bits quite chunky. And yep... should be cooked before you add it to the potato - but then presumably it has to be to get it out the shell properly.
that sounds delicious! i love making crab cakes! but i have never used potato, i usually use panko to make the outside a little crispy.. too much breadcrumbs is awful though haha . ill definitely try your recipe next!
With the sweet chilli sauce if you want it kinda red in colour just add some red food colouring to it, it won't affect he flavour and will make it look like that stuff from the chinese. You can also use this to dip in spring rolls, tempura veg/prawn, chicken or veg pakora, samosas or even as a relish to have with chilli burgers, its pretty vesitile.
@littleplayer2000 paprika does have flavour. depends if its the smoked stuff or not. red food colouring only takes a few drops. try both and see what works best.cooking is always trial and error :-)

@thefridagee Try mixing some natural yoghurt, with mango chutney (bought or made) and fresh coriander. Also great if you don't like the chilli.

how hot does the oil have to be before you put the crabcakes in them?
inuyashafreekXP 1 year ago
@inuyashafreekXP hot enough for it to sizzle a little. Otherwise the cakes just absorb too much oil. No where near smoking though!

With the sweet chilli sauce if you want it kinda red in colour just add some red food colouring to it, it won't affect he flavour and will make it look like that stuff from the chinese.
