Man, this guitar solo... It's the saddest and at the same time the most hopeful and sweetest piece of music I've heard in a long time. There's a ton of magical E. Smith moments in his brilliant catalog, but there's something about this track. It's like a flashback of his happiest and saddest moments during childhood, growing up to his turbulent end. All this from notes from a guitar. Amazing. RIP

I can't describe in words how much I relate to this song--how little I always thought of how I looked and felt.
At some point in life you learn that more often than not it's not what you have but what you lack that matters; that it's what your lacking--confidence, looks, ect.--that define your life in this world.
And you go through life thinking that only you feel this way and then you hear a beautiful song like this one and you understand that you're at least not alone with your anguish.

Elliot was such a unique arranger his cord progs were very different than most. But what I like are the little things in the songs. His string arrangements are unreal. Listen to the cellos in the song Color Bars. Just pure genius. At times I hear a little "Alex Chilton Big Star" influence. But that might just be me.
people complain often about from a basement on the hill not being finished but whats there is definitely amazing and could be called complete, probably if he didn't die and it was released like it is people wouldn't say that nearly as much at all , i think. what do you think?
I can't believe how much of himself he put into his songs. And i still ain't heard a bad song from him ---> a true inspiration for me as a songwriter.
I agree brother. He was such a tunefull guy, really made you listen to his lyrics. not many artists hve the power to make you cry at a song but he had it in spades. A true great and to me a very uplifting guy always a light at the end of the tunnel in my view.
Amazing song! However, I kinda feel like this is about heroin.

There are some mistakes in the the lyrics... ^^":
'sometimes is all I feel up to now
but it's not worth it to you
cos you gotta get high somehow
is it destruction that you require to feel?'

The greatest ballad ever for all of us with self-esteem issues.
It's a good thing to say how you truly, painfully feel.
It's a great thing to say how you truly, painfully feel in a beautiful and meaningful way.
That is exclusively what Smith did and our world is a greater place for him having done so.
