I'm so sad that I was only 2 when I saw my only game at Tiger Stadium. My dad told me when I asked him what happened at the game that the Tigers won so that's cool.
I have a glass full of dirt from home plate from the last "kids run the bases day" the tiger stadium had. I miss the historic feel everywhere you went in this stadium.
I was at a game here in 1992 while traveling through and they played the White Sox and I remember Robin Ventura hitting a HR to deep center field, which was a section over from where I was sitting. A fan next to me was telling me how rare it was for a HR to be hit to center field at Tiger Stadium.
Im not nostalgic ,i dont have good memories of tiger stadium, sitting up in the bleachers, sweating ,Those old blue walkways, that were littered with popcorn, atleast we have comerica now
I have two quiestions. On in the video I have of the last game I notice the sign in the background kept changing. Did they have a changing sign there. I know they didnt have it when I was last there in 1975. (2). According they the internet they finished the demelotion of tiger stadium in 1999. But part of it was still standing when I was last up there in 2010. What ever happened to the old place?
You really did a nice job of capturing the feel of this ballpark. Interesting note; when the Minnesota Twins played their last game at Metropolitan Stadium in 1981, they also played the Royals.
I was in the bleachers for this game. This brings me back. Way to capture Fick's grand slam on camera. That was one of the happiest and saddest moments of my life.
The only game I ever saw at Tiger Stadium was in the last year there, 1999. I was 7 years old and we played the White Sox. I vaguely remember the obstructed seating and even then I could tell it was a historic, classic place.
What an honor it must have been to take the field for this one. The last game at historic Tiger Stadium. So many great childhood memories. In the end though, I think most of us can agree that the time had come for a new stadium. All great things must come to an end.
Wasnt here Tiger Stadium closed September 27,1999 Todd Jones threw the last pitch to Carlos Beletran and struck him out on a 2-2 Curveball. The Tigers won 8-2
@alashieve - Comerica park is awful, its not a baseball park, stupid condo developers design that cooke-cutter dump.. It's too big and so far away from the field, Hitting a homer is boring in that cow pasture. So what, if there was obstructed views at Tiger Stadium, at it was magic place. It was Detroit Rock City.
Tiger Stadium just had a different sound to it. Listening to the radio broadcasts, you could litteraly hear bits and pieces of the crowd talking. Going to a ball game will never be the same again. Upper deck seats at Tiger Stadium were much closer than those at Comerica Park. I am glad I took lots of video my last few visits to the park.
Being in that Stadium was like no other. When I was a young kid we would always go to Tiger Stadium. Their is no reason in hell why they could not have kept it.
Haunting video...I spent so many Sat afternoons with my Dad at games. Seeing it comming down last summer when I came home for a visit was like seeing an old friend dieing,
Geez, it makes you wanna cry, you know? Kinda like the last scene in field of dreams or something. I remember watching games there when I was a little boy. I work in sports broadcasting now and it's all because of summer nights in Grand Rapids, MI listening to Ernie Harwell.
this stadium was a proper representation of the city, the oldest ballpark in the US, and it felt like baseball when you went there. and what did they do? they built another cookie cutter stadium that looks like every other new ballpark in the country, and they destroyed all of the wonderful and unique history that the stadium created over a span of 90 years. at least build a new stadium replica, like the yankees did. i don't care how clean comerica is, it will never compare. anyone feelin this?
Yeh, axisbrain...you described it right. The politicians and big money idiots don't care about tradition, history...only more money. I've sat in every corner of that ballpark and loved every minute. I will never walk into Comerica Park ( stupid name anyhow.) By the way, anybody got a video of the last game, I'd pay cash money for a copy....I'm serious.
I'm an architect and it's sad. This is one of my favorite stadium designs. Ok they build a new one.. WHY demolish the old one??.. I mean USA is not Japan where every square feet is gold.
It's sad to know big money idiots only care for the profit, not the spirit of baseball...
I feel ya bro... Im an Indian fan got to love the stadium during the 90's when the Jake was always sold out detroit was a closer drive always had tickets left and during those years detroit games were like home games for thr tribe....
This video does choke me up a little bit...gotta hold back a tear
@axlsbrain Exactly, Comerica park is poorly designed. It's for fathead sheep suburbia morons. Some crap mall designer build it, cookie-cutter dump, Illitch's fault. It's a huge cow pasture and the seats are soooo far from the field. The new Yankee Stadium plays just like the old one. real nice. Out of the new parks, Astros field is real cool. has nice overhang in left with great design. Twins new park is awful huge cow-pasture dump as well! These stadium designers are should be fired!
For the last game, all the players wore numbers honoring Tigers greats: Karim Garcia (uggh) wore #6 to honor Al Kaline for instance. One exception: as seen at 6:13 Gabe Kapler wore no number to honor Ty Cobb.
I paid $120 on eBay for a pair of upper deck LF obstructed view, last row. ($8 face) My back was against concrete. Not only was it worth every penny, I'd have paid double that.
I dont appreciate that. Yankee and Fenway are not cool. But coming from a die-hard true cubs fan, Wrigley is the best. And coming from a Tigers fan, Tiger stadium is a close second best and is one of the best stadiums ever built.
You probably already know this by now, but just in case you didn't they preserved the field and the stands and area behind home plate for little league games and tournaments which is awesome. A little bit is better than nothing especially when it comes to Tiger Stadium.
well wake up. obama wants government housing every wear. thats the real reason the old stadium is being torn down .sheepole evrey wear. once Gm leaves Detroit, and the auto show, ill have no reason to go to shit town. AMEN let the crooks take it over. detroit still is murder capitiol of the us.
I took a road trip from Chicago to see old Tiger Stadium that last season. It was beautiful--I felt like I went back in time to the golden era of baseball. It gave me the same feeling as old Comiskey with the double decked grandstands all the way around. New parks just don't equal the old.
It may have been old and had some obstructive seating but I loved that stadium! And that was a great game. I remember Al Kaline was calling the game and he told Fick that he was going to homer that night...and sure enough!
I suppose nothing lasts forever but I will surely miss this place. My first game coming up from under the stands and seeing the field that first time, the green almost hurt your eyes.
I would also like to send condolences to the Fidrych family on this sad day with the passing of Mark. Sad day for Detroit and for baseball with his passing.
Thats exactly how I remember it as a kid. The concourses felt like you were in a cave, but walking out of the tunnel, it felt like the stadium just opened up in front of you, with all the green grass and blue seats. I got that every time I went to Tiger Stadium. Never have at Comerica Park.
U R quite true. That stadium was intimate and traditional; comerica lacks character and intimacy.John mchale screwed comerica over with bad design and lack of public input; thats why he was shown the door.
Why would you blame Mike Illitch? Is it because he moved the team into a revamped part of Detroit? Or is it because he was instrumental in giving the Tigers a beautiful stadium to play in that was almost christened by a world series victory?
Bleacher Creatures forever!!! Right underneath the Budweiser billboard I think it was. Saw the homerun that hit the top of the lumberyard across the street. It was awesome.
Graet video and thanx for the memories. I am in my mid 50's and this stirred some emothions. Now, only 1/2 of Tiger Stadium is standing. Never should have torn it down and just modernized it. A great place in Baseball history. I was at the first game in 1984 when 'The Wave' was started.
God Bless you for this video. We were there that day, Sept. 27th, 1999...I walked with Kirk Gibson to the stadium from CoarkTown, Jack Morris signed my ticket and we sat by Gordie Howe. We arrived and started tailgating at 9:00am. It was 87 degrees and sunny. I missed Fick's homer in the old bathrooms with the sink like urinals. Memories, oh memories...what a day in the life of any fan.
Comerica Park is nice, but Tiger Stadium was legendary. There was a feeling that you got walking in there, through the dark concourses and up the ramps, and suddenley the park "opened up" before your eyes. I wish Comerica was more like Tiger stadium, but its a radical departure.
Well, to be fair, pretty much everyone in their lineup right now. :) That being said, Comerica would look great with an overhanging upper deck down the right field line. "Gibby's Porch."
It's pretty sad that they are going to tear down this piece of history and something near and dear to many Tigers fans hearts, just to put in a bank or a strip mall : [[ It pisses me off.
Damn Its too bad to see these old places go out. Yeah fenway and yankee stadiums still stand but this place always made me turn the tv on no matter how bad the o's sucked being a b-more fan when ever they went to tiger stadium it was always just a good game to watch 440 to center maybe never heard of again!!
I miss that stadium, my most memorable game ther was Mickey Mantle remembrance day(saturday after the Mick passed on)Toronto played the Tigers and i had to sit through a 3 hour rain delay. Great times at old tiger Stadium.
I remember going there in the middle to late 80's... a couple memories that stand out are the double wave. one in the upper deck and one in the lower deck, going the same way AND going opposite directions...
The other fond memory is from sitting near the tigers dugout and watching the whole left side of the bleachers yell and point to the right side saying "TASTE GREAT" and the right side doing that to the left side yelling "LESS FILLING". that is something I will never forget.
Thats the unfortunate thing- the old stadiums had an aura but we forget the inconvienences.
As you say better for the fan but not better to be or play in.
It will be a shame when they tear down because from my day I remember so many great Norm Cash-Jim Northrup and even Jason (WHO?) Thompson home runs when watching them on TV.
That right field upper deck was the classic and the Tigers could have duplicated that as the Rangers did in Texas.
Thanks for loading this. I was there, and it was beautiful. I'm tearing up watching that grand slam again. One of the best things I have ever witnessed.
You are very fortunate to be able to say you were there... looking back on it now, I would pay any price to be there. You don't really realize what you have until you don't have it anymore.
What A GEM!!! It sure was great being a Bleacher Creature. for $2 dollars you got a to watch a baseball game along with an average of 3 fights a night!!!
I'm so sad that I was only 2 when I saw my only game at Tiger Stadium. My dad told me when I asked him what happened at the game that the Tigers won so that's cool.

When I hit the lottery, I'll make a bid on the stadium. (Right now, I'd settle for Grilli getting out of an inning with no damage!)

I miss going there, Comerica park just don't have the same feel that tiger stadium had!!!
But Comerica it is a better ballpark for the fans.

AWESOME- AWESOME PLACE- While not a Tigers fan I always rooted for them to do well-especially agaisnt the Yankees.
This place was great-too bad its left to just die while crowds at Comerica will diminish.

Hey also you should burn it to a dvd and sell some on e-bay at decent prices, I'd pay $10 before shipping for a copy

Thanks for loading this. I was there, and it was beautiful. I'm tearing up watching that grand slam again. One of the best things I have ever witnessed.

I actually LIKE Comerica Park....still think Tiger Stadium should be a basebal museum or something

The Tigers should have moved to The Pontiac Silverdome for a few years and renovated Tiger Stadium.
:(

You are very fortunate to be able to say you were there... looking back on it now, I would pay any price to be there. You don't really realize what you have until you don't have it anymore.

Tiger Stadium = Best ballpark ever built.
Comerica Park = One of the worst ballparks ever constructed.
