A very fine performance. She needs a little more work on phrasing to get a more dance-like feeling into this Allemande and a little less vibrato. But on the whole, a fine effort from someone with a great future. It doesn't matter what cello she uses or what strings. For those who asked, do you think you'll be able to do it to if you had the same cello or strings? It's a really dumb question.
"She needs a little more work on phrasing to get a more dance-like feeling into this Allemande" ...well, this is the Prelude...and there's nothing like a dance-like feeling into a Prelude, as it is a Prelude infact (and this one has a Toccata-like style) and not a dance. ;-)
I realize that this is a constant issue with interpretation of baroque music. I realize that there are always issues with a time period and how you should play the music, but pieces such as these are hard to not put a feel into them. Unfortunately, he wrote solos for one of the most expressive instruments :) My teacher told me I played this too romantically, but decided to allow me to because that was how I wanted to interpret it. Sifei, you sounded awesome!
I would like to note that your playing is too romantic for my taste. Bach never would have created this piece if he was born a romantic. You can argue that he was very advanced (maybe about 200 years?) and that interpretation is based on philosophy of sound. Then again the music she made wasn't ugly, but it lacked meaning. I can tell she is quite creative and very musical, but I think imo baroque music sounds HORRIBLE when played in a romantic fashion.
One thing I can tell you, Mr/Mrs RedWasabii with wrong spelling, I like hearing music in different interpretations. Hypocrites' opinions should made if they can proof their own performance have better audiences in quality and quantity. Otherwise their criticisms will generate the tone of jealousy. I can not hear the difference of her romantic level and yours in actual sound so it is very difficult for me to compare. May be you can post your performance and show me exactly what you mean.
I wonder why audience did not respond at the end. Some say when the music is performed perfectly, audience will fall sleep because it is so nice. Is that the case? Could be.
Her performance is almost perfect. It is scary. She should be a pro right now. I can listen to it without worrying about hearing any missed notes. Lots of potentials to become a master cello player.
Someone needs to improve the recording and sound quality so she can have hight impact presentation on YouTube.
These are rhythmic dances, and whoever taught this girl needs to take it back. There's very very very very little room to put in your emotions. Also, more vibrato would be nice. Now for some praise for the performer-- YEAH!!! Sorry who taught this girl. But her technicality is great (she hit both e^E and eb^Eb octave notes!) Nonetheless... bachs notes are musically fulfilling enough. That is what this piece is about, so there should be no over expression of emotion!!!!
You obviously don't know who her teacher is... Besides what legitimate musician discourages someone from phrasing Bach? Good luck in your cello career, making a living playing Bach without emotion. Let me know how that works out.
Cuatdcamp and Cellorubik are both wrong. The prelude is the only non-dance movement. Any Bach appreciator would also know that the dance movements lose their physical characteristics and increases in musical depth, just to let you know. I think she should follow her teacher's teachings but in the future I really hope she doesn't play this romantic. Baroque music tends to sound MUCH better when it is "imitated" in a baroque fashion. However I guess it's just a philosophy of sound..
rhythm and intonation were flawless. The phrases were long and made alot of sense when you break the whole peice down. You hardly missed a single note. I also liked how you controlled the bow perfectly near the bridge, but you moved to the fingerboard occasionally for added color.
i loved it. your technique is way awesome compared to mine. i've been plying for 7 years and i still don't have the bow hold down yet. lol but yea, still awesome
its amazing i respect u. but just a little bit slower. =]? that way to have more time to stick some more vibrato in there. this is a very melodic suite.

This is in reply of cuatdcamp.
I think you are mistaken. Only the first suite is full of dances not the third. The second and the third suites are more lyrical if you will.
