  • This song so incredibly sad, especially when you consider Ireland's history and the migration to America. The last stanza of this song is:

I got up two hours before day

And I got a letter from my true love.

I heard the blackbird and the linnet say

That my love had crossed the ocean.

I think sorrow is such an important part of Irish culture (especially music). Ironic, considering I read a study a while ago that said Ireland has the lowest depression rates in the country.

  • This brought a tear to my eye. For good reason it sings to my Celtic roots deep in my ancestry. These songs give me chills.

  • I would like to see Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh sleeping with a charming young maid in her arms :) Sorry if you do not like the joke, in my culture solist singing a "wrong gender" song is very uncommon. But it is soo beautiful.

  • The lady is everything I'm not. Young, female, beautiful, plays violin, and sings like an angel.

Where did I go wrong ?

  • Everything Donal touches turns to gold. Beautiful.

  • I see that Dónal is still diligently doing his work.

  • Dear Steve, I would thank you not to post these ridiculous comments on my screen or I shall go to the police if it happens one more time! thank you Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh

  • beautiful- that voice!

  • I love Mairead's voice. I'm seeing Altan tonight in NYC

  • Altan means Gold in Mongolian. Her voice is really from gold.

  • @szalard: I love Monoglia.

  • She's Irish......

  • i've got the Chieftains singing this with Sting. i like the all-gaeilge version better though. it is a beautiful language; one worth preserving. my daughter will grow up with the Religion, Language and the pride of her Da's people. just waiting for her to be born so i can start teaching. still learning myself right now though. lol

  • hope the wee bairn is healthy when it arrives keep the faith and remember the homeland

  • there is nothing better than a girl singing to the sounds of a guitar. thx for the video and of course thx for the wonderful and lyrics

  • Irish music at its best.

  • Beautifull..

Only.. who's the artist? Karen Matheson? Déanta? Not Altan, that's for sure?

  • it's Mairéd ni Mhaonaigh, who's the singer of altan!

  • I first hear voice where she sang "Will the Circle be Unbroken" in Transatlantic session, since when I've fallen love with her haunting voice that so exquisitvely sings the Irish.

I'm not Irish, yet no songs ever so fascinates like Irish songs. Wish I had an Irish love or friend to drown in the pond of Ireland. God bless Ireland and her people.

  • Great song. The images remind me of far away places I haven't seen for a long time.

  • That last picture looks like somewhere I've never seen before. Does Ireland really have it's own look and feel or am I just imagining it?

  • Looks like Rannoch Moor viewed from the Black Mount to me (in Scotland). Music, landscape....bliss.

  • only in ireland. woah lunny is so old now lol

  • Tá mo Chleamhnas Déanta - My match is made. But voice like that is hard to match.

  • I MISS IRELAND AND SCOTLAND REALLY BAD!!! I loved them!! BEAUTIFUL PART OF EUROPE!!!

  • Exquisite!

  • Perfect!Her voice is amazing!
