  • I did not quite like the recobbled cut, but that may just be because all the intervals from animation to picture per picture.

  • WERE DID YOU FIND THIS?!

  • Alright, if you watch the song Princess Yum Yum sings, you will notice, half way through, in the mirror, the feather in her hair disappears, and then suddenly it's not in her hair anymore, and then it reappears. It's like.... was NO ONE paying attention when they made this?

  • I watched the Recobbled Cut before I began watching any of the other remakes... Holy crap. I can't take the remakes 30 seconds into it. Just SHUT UP!!!! Tack was a fantastic character with his only 4 words. And they spoon feed EVERYTHING to the audience. STTTOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPP!!!! And the thief was a fantastic character because he didn't speak, ARRRGGH!! The original was a freaking unfinished masterpiece!!

  • it's weird I can't remember which one I watched when I was little

probably the 1995 verison but I don't remember Tak talking that much or opening his mouth until like the middle...but I do remember the Thief talking...so I guess I watched the 1995 verison

but yeah I haven't watched each of them but I probably will love them all in different ways.

  • I grew up the the Arabian Night version of this movie, but though is was butchered in many ways, I love the movie still in every version.

  • @LordBifford Apparently it's Robert Folk, the magician behind the magical score for the Never Ending Story sequel.

I guess he has a bad habit of making amazing scores for bad films. :P

  • The soundtrack in this is a lot better than the Recobbled Cut. Each cut has its merits, I guess.

  • @LordBifford Why is it better? Just curious.

  • Now THIS is the version that I am very familiar with. I watched this when I was a kid, I don't remember when, but I remember it. I also remember the song that the Brigands sang.

That is the indicator of how I know that it is the proper version, to which I prefer. :P

  • I remember getting high and watching this movie when I was in my teens....funny shit!! very messed up 2 lol

  • @slashnyaoi

his inner monologue talks in the Miramax version

  • Disney version of the original, yeah?

  • I KNEW THIS BEFORE ANY PERSON TOLD ME ABOUT iT.... it annoys me..

  • at least the thief doens't "talk" in this movie

  • @hackensac ....he talks?

  • hey, as long as theres no inner monologue and lame forced jokes, this movie aint so bad

  • As poor a version this is; This is still WAY better then Arabian Knight. Neither the Thief, Phido nor the alligators had voices, more of Williams' animation was kept, There was at least less useless narration and Steve Lively's voice is at least much easier to listen to then Broderick! But that doesn't excuse all the flaws that were carried over in Arabian Knight.

  • @121jakethesnake very true

  • Omg, this poor animated film.

  • 20 people are on Arabian Knight's side!

  • I once saw this version, when I was very small. And I never found it since, until I looked on here. Thank you for putting it up here, so I may taste childhood again. I love both versions.

  • now what have we learned today?

never steal from an old lady.

    they are verry verry dangerous.

  • .......wtf there was more to this movie?? That's what I get for watching the cereal box version :-P thanks so much for the upload

  • OMG i used to LOVE THE THIEF!!!!

  • Poor theif! That old lady's beating the shit out of him XD

  • I've been looking for this forever! T_T

Along with The Princess and The Goblin and The Black Cauldron, this film is one of best ones I've seen when I was very young!

  • I actually.. like both versions XD And their cheesy songs and I thought the cobbler's voice was cute. o _o at least i had a crush on him when I was little

  • i love this movie i remember watching it when i was young and laughing at the sex jokes :P

  • Well this version is closer to Williams' vision more than the Miramax, I still prefer the Miramax one cuz of the thief's dialogue with the moments.

  • Well... At least it isn't as bad as Arabian Knight.

  • i remember from this movie, we were able to here what the theif was thinking

  • @ropersun This was actually produced before Aladdin, but because of the popularity of Disney this film was lost when it came out and not many people heard of it. It was the greatest work of the director and he worked on it for 15 years only to have it trodden on when Aladdin came out. It's a similar story with similar character, the hero, the princess the simple king and the evil advisor; character in the classic fairy tale that is seen in many other animated movies :)

  • y golden balls y not golden spheres

  • I mss ths movie so much

  • :D I remember my uncle showing me this as a kid, good times....

  • @ropersun This was in production fifteen years before 'Aladdin' was a picture on Disney's storyboards.

  • @BAWK0 well then if you hate that word, what about Child

  • oops sry i just realized that this was made b4 aladdin!! i feel so stupid!! srry srry SRRY!!!

  • @BAWK0 IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WORD KID THEN DON'T PAY ANY ATTENTION TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lol Tack sounds so funny xD

  • Did you know that 2 of the writers of this version of The Thief and the Cobbler wrote the screenplay for the Super Mario Bros movie? I guess they have a bad habit of taking something awesome and just ruin it for everyone.

  • @Silvergirl231 first, the name´s song is ''she is more'', and no, bobbi page may sing well but the song itself sucks animated balls

  • 7:33 Makes you want to have an anal evacuation.......if you know what I mean

  • Sounds like Roark vs. Keating, if anyone knows what I mean...

  • If this version is called "The Princess and the Cobbler," why is "thief" still in the title?

  • @GameStation3 the video releases kept the original title

  • wow this reminds me too much of Aladdin, except the music sucks. The Miramax version is so much better than this butchered version. At least the original version seemed more unique than anything I've already seen.

  • @aPrincessyetaSoldier i think you switched the versions around, the version with the music sucks is the Miramax/Calvert versions, the one that is by considered the best animated picture (the reccobled cut) is the original version.

  • The premise is VASTLY different from the re-cobbled cut! One-eye wasn't even introduced until close to 1/3 of the film in that one, and this downgrades the kingdom to a single city free from the one-eyes.

  • my sister and i used to watch this movie all the time when we were kids.. it used to scare the crap out of me.. i love the old lady with the saggy boobs

  • Holy crap, that is good animation, and a nice princess! O.O

  • Eh, it's not as bad as the Miramax version *shudder*

  • I don't ever remember watching this with a voice when I was a kid :S

  • the flowers at 9:30 are a testament to how good richard williams was as an animator

    they look real!!!!!!!

  • i love how u can see the obvious shifts between animation...its horrible how they couldnt even shade it properly

i wouldve liked the recut version more if they would hav stuck to the original animation

  • @BRLproductions I'd still show my kids The Recobbled version first, lol.

  • Thumbs up if you wish you could go back in time and have the original version of this movie finished and released some time before Aladdin.

  • can I buy a bootleg from you?

  • @77DarkButterfly No this isn't the original. The original version has Tack and the thief pretty much not talking at all, it was more about the animation. As others have said, The Recobbled Cut gives the best idea of the original.

  • I love this cartoon its been so long since ive seen it but its still one of my favs!

  • @77DarkButterfly Truth be told, I'm just as confused, yet intrigued at the same time at which version to watch. I don't think the Richard Williams version had any songs, though. The re-cobbled cut is said to be the closest to the original version.

  • @puppetmaster1011 I see.

  • I grew up on both versions. As a child this version was more entertaining. But getting older the original was definitely better.

  • But I could've sworn Tack's voice was different...

  • wow the intro music is a rip-off of ET's theme.

    indeed a john williams rip-off

  • @lilmizlulu16 Watch the recobbled version first, then come back to this one. The recobble is the workprint or 'true' version of the movie and you'll see how much things were shuffled around in this one, but it doesn't mean this version is bad.

  • I've seen the original and it was truly a masterpeice as you said.

I decided to check this version out to compare...and my God...it was truly, if not brutally, butchered.

  • O_o How could the king forget the city's one and only weakness?!

  • It's been ages since I've seen this. And like many others, I grew up with this version. I'm gonna watch this one, then watch the other one. But this will always be the version I grew up with, so I can't really diss on it without kidding myself. When I was little, I did like the stupid songs.

  • people seriously, all the versions are good, and some of us grew up with different versions so stop complaining.

  • With Matt Brodrick's voice removed and replaced with an older self with less monologue, no voice for the thief, but still with the songs and the always-CG animation, and the princess complaining fordoing nothing but still ends up as the disney-stereotypical damsel-in-distress, i would give this version a C- grade.

  • @EpicSammich Yeah, the vocals were pretty bad, the instrumentals were alright though, at least I thought so. It's miles better then that awful Miramax cut, that one treated it like it was a used car commercial or some kind of monster truck rally, something along those lines at least with a cheesy announcer and everything, ugh...

But yeah, the original definitely tops both of them.

  • This actually doesn't anger me half as much as the Miramax cut, so far at least.

Then again I haven't seen the Recobbled cut yet, I'm saving the best for last and getting the lesser versions over with.

  • It wasn't until I re-watched this film that I realised Zig Zag has 6 fingers.

  • aside from the narrator, is there a difference between this version and "Arabian Knight" version?

  • @hachi301 Several voices are changed (Tack and Princess Yum-Yum, most notably). Also, the Thief, Phido, and the alligators all talk, and they cut even more stuff out, like the old witch's human form, and One-Eye's death. Oh, and they cut one of the songs. but who cares.

  • i remember seeing this on vhs as a kid and then later watching the recobbled cut. have to say, williams was a true artist and I love that version alot more than this! nice description btw haha

  • Okay before everyone starts ranting on me, this is MY opinion

I like the recobbled version AND this version, the original version is a masterpiece and very adorable as for this version it's very cute :)

  • @EpicSammich This is vincent Price. I have planted a time bomb in your house before it was built. you have 50 seconds to leave. 1,2, skip-a-few, 50! (EXPLOSION)! oh i just love being devious!

  • is the Recobbled Cut good or is it better compared to this

  • @recon500 The Recobbled Cut is definitely better, it's much more how the film was meant to be seen.

  • @marrey9 why?

  • You know, the cobbler looks a lot like a character in a DVD out now. "The Secret of Kells." Any relation?

I did see this in the theater. But which version?

-I have the soundtrack and I recognize that song. (I'm pretty sure the version I saw had the silly Bom Bom Thief song - which I liked!)

-BUT so far this version has little spoken word and I thought the theatrical release had some big names. Mathew Broderick, Vincent Price, and the thief muttered continuously but I foget the actor!

  • What is really sad about the Fred Calvert version is that all of this crappy animation was done by good animators who have also worked for Disney/Bluth/etc. Nobody's hearts were in it. One of the former Bluth animators I asked about the project referred to it as "prostitution."

And the horrid rushed Thai ink and paint work didn't help. (It's a crime how reams of Williams rough animation were simply junked, after the half-framerate ink and paint job akin to those Korean traced colorizations.)

  • @TServo2049 (continued)

The best scenes to come out of the Completion Bond production were the Williams scenes finished at Premier Films by the original team. For example, I know that Premier completed the Thief in Yum-Yum's bathroom playing with the bubbles, and the Thief stealing the "The End" and running off with the film. They're finished on ones, and they look basically indistinguishable from completed Williams footage.

  • @TServo2049 Since those had already been finished in pencil before Williams was fired, and the original team finished and shot them, it's not surprising. There are a few somewhat decent scenes which WEREN'T finished in pencil during Williams' direction, but nothing that was animated after Williams was fired, even by the London team, actually holds up to Williams' work.

  • @anaisabelperez "I dont like the Recobbled because of the too many animation changes (pencil sketch to the colored to whatever was next)"

Well to be fair, it wouldn't have been that way if the creator had been allowed to finish his own film. ;)

I do think this version has some good moments. But I also think the Recobbled version is funny in its own way as well. It's just too very different ways of telling the story.

  • @addictableAble

    RECOBBLED!!!!!

  • after watching the recobbled version, this version is pissing me off.. the narration is so annoying... and the song is sooooo lame!!! but maybe im just biased lol

  • @Sezthemouse Omg I was thinking the exact same thing! maybe I should've watched this one first and then the recobbled version because idk if i can even finish this movie now

  • @silvermoonlight29 lol yeah the recobbled version is totally worth watching, i got to like the 3rd vid of this and gave up lol

  • @Sezthemouse same here! when I got to about the end of the 2nd vid - beginning of the 3rd vid I gave up.

  • PFFFFFFFFFFF.... don't listen to me - movies aren't that smooth either - news programmes or smth like that.

  • BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA - what the hell? Tack's next generation is 50 cent or what? And you can clearly see what is the Williams' work and what is those shitheads' lead by Calvert work - their animation goes ~12 frames per second, like almost every animation around the world; Williams animation is going full 25 frames per second, nearly like in movies. And THAT'S just awesome.

  • SPINNING!

  • I think a lot of us should thank the Nostalgia critic. I didn't even know about this hunk of shit/beautiful animated masterpiece before he told me about it.

  • @koyoteblue1998 Same here. I might make a video comparison of the three versions.

  • @koyoteblue1998 I found out through a trailer on Disney's "The Swiss Family Robinson."

  • @koyoteblue1998 i always loved this movie when i was a little girl, but i could not remember the name for the life of me! then some dude in my college class was looking at pictures of the movie and then i melted in my seat.. couldn't wait to get home that night.. but he didn't release the class early that day =/

  • You know, I've only watched the first part, but you know what it reminds me of?

Sailor Moon, which was equally cropped, for "censorship" purposes, though a lot of episodes were edited/cut and the original dialog run through the mud.

I'm willing to bet that, since SM also hit English TV in about 1993, the same people that edited this also were in charge of that anime.

  • Yup I see a huge difference already. This one basically has the cobbler narrating, but the recobbled version has a narrator telling the story. The sound and music is also better in the recobbled.

  • @Pooky1991 To be fair, the original was narrated by the cobbler, but you didn't find that out until the very end when the cobbler speaks for the first time.

  • @mardeninthegarden Hmmm Thats a clever way of doing it. Reveal the narrator at the end. Not many movies do that.

  • thumbs up if the nostalgia critic sent you here!

  • @Punkchic207 I haven't even seen his review of it yet, but it's thanks to him that I even know this movie exists. I wanted to see this movie before I saw his review of it.

  • You have to admit, compared to the Miramax version, this is heaps better.

  • I like both versions. I like this version since the Theif, to me, is hilarious. The other since its good good good.

  • I love arabian princess! With pants and veil, they are beautiful!

  • I loved all of the versions, but after watching the recobbled cut, I realized that they were Horrid. my favorite comparison to the recobbled cut, is probably Fantasia. Because the music does most of the speaking.

  • One of the main problems with the other versions of this film is that they made Tack (and the The Thief, in Arabian Knight) talk. Granted, Thief's dialoug was funny at times, but Richard Williams intended them to be the silent protagonists, much like Tom and Jerry. Sometimes there's a lot more charm just by not saying anything.

If I had to say that there was one thing I like about these versions, it's that they make the Princess desire to be useful and not like other princesses.

  • Odd how they changed the movie! :o

  • Did it really just start the movie by acknowledging the ending, and that the narrator is Tack? Holy shit...

  • It tells you something about how badly the original was butchered when this version has a slew of crappy songs added to it and its STILL shorter...

  • YESIFOUNDITTHANKYOU

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE xD I love Tack!!

  • @addictableAble i like this better

  • The combination of almost scarily fluid animation, design, the crudely inserted cheap-footage, plus knowing what actually happened to the film, makes it all a little haunting.

  • God the animation is so FUCKING WEIRD in this movie, it freaks me out, I can't imagine watching it as a kid.

  • Okay, I hate the narrator DX I watched the Recobbled Cut version first, it was amazing, even though it wasn't completed, and it was easy to follow along, without the annoying narrator >.< He's explaining EVERY detail! Practically ruining the movie D'X

  • note to self don't mess with a woman with bannanas o.o

  • The fountain at 3:29 is inspired on the one in the Alhambra of Granada. ^-^

  • thanks you for uploading this I use to always watch this.

  • For some reason PrincessYum Yum reminds me of Jessica rabbit

  • @catloverattack They have similar facial designs. Large eyes and mouth, barely any nose, and they're both very curvy.

  • i personally love this version because i grew up with it. i'm not saying that i don't like the first one, i'm just saying that i prefer this one.

    And the versions of this movie in order go like this;

    1. The Theif and the Cobbler

    2. The Princess and The Cobbler

    3. Arabian Knight

    salvarez

  • @Salvarez001 agreed, ive seen the others and enjoyed them, but im just so used to this one.

  • I watched this as a kid , and it was the most funniest movie i've ever seen . it never got old

  • "There's a mind in the body of this pretty miss..."

UM WAT. How could you write such an insipid line? Didn't someone look at this script (or at least the lyrics) before giving an OK??

And this "pretty miss", of all animated characters, does not seem to be the kind who would break into an "I Want" Song. :(

  • I laughed at this because the cobbler's voice does not match his character. XD

  • 192 people are animation haters.

  • This version is ruined by the added cobblers narration

  • I've watched a bit into the "real" version of The Thief and the Cobbler and, it's still amazing but, I love this version more, I grew up with it <3

  • this is pretty terrible compared to the original i'm watching now... down to the voice acting and sound effects and everything.

  • It's been two minutes and already I can see it's not half of the original

  • Look in any of these butchered versions, they can never mess up the Muscle Nanny's Indian burn on the Thief hahahahaha.

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE! <3

  • I <3 the Recobbled version, but there is something missing here without Jonathon Winters...

  • i really like the songs in this movie... can u tell me who sings please? are the titles "She is more" and "Am i feeling love" ? I mean these are the main songs, right?

  • i really like the songs in this movie... can u tell me who sings please? are the titles "She is more" and "Am i feeling love" ? I mean these are the main songs, right?

  • i really like the songs in this movie... can u tell me who sings please? are the titles "She is more" and "Am i feeling love" ? I mean these are the main songs, right?

  • @chiconcia Just look at the Wiki and you can learn a lot about the movie, as well as the vocal casting.

  • Majestic Films and Miramax didn't even FOCUS, they DIDN'T EVEN FOCUS on making their versions faithful.

  • I'm going to watch both versions. This one doesn't seem to bad. The animation style is unique. it took me a couple of minutes to get into it but now I really like it. Plus it's got Vincent Price!

  • I can't believe all these immature fangirls commenting on this version (and the Arabian Night version) are always thanking you for uploading it. I mean, you only released these horrible versions on YouTube to show how The Thief and the Cobbler was destroyed, right? Well, these fangirls must have probably hated Richard Williams, a great animator and creator of this really expertly done but butchered movie. The Recobbled Cut would always be the best version of the movie.

  • @Spidgewood3000 the Recobbled version is the best, but it is nice to see all three to see how different eyes construe things. It is horrible that they cut so much of it away and it isn't anything meant to be personal against Richard Williams who really is great, but this is in the childhoods of other people and by uploading it they are getting memories they can touch on AND they get to see what it was really meant to be.

  • tack's vocie does not fit him at all

  • yum yum dances like thumbilina X3

  • i used to watch this movie all the time as a kid, i used to always rent this & my parents thought i was obessed with this movie (:. i love the part when the old lady kicks the theifs butt :) & how he always trys to get that stupic gold and he always fails sort of lmfao

  • 3:40 the thief got owned by an old lady

  • OMG!!!!! I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! when i was younger i use to watch this all the time and i havent seen it in a long time and now im 16 and i found it again!!! yay!!! thank you so much for uploading it

  • The original's better, that's agreeable. But I'm glad I'd at least had this version as a kid because it was better then never having known it at all.

  • The Thief got Owned!

  • @addictableAble defiantly see the recobbled one D:

  • I loved this movie so much when I was younger and thought it was insanely amazing even now. Never knew the history of movie, thank you for posting that in the description btw, and will be looking up The Recobbled Cut now. Its hard that anything can be better than this 'hack' job, so I'll be looking forward to setting it!

  • this is version is nice, and i've yet to see Recobbled Cut. i have the mirimax version. it's weird not hearing the theif's thoughts... he made the movie much more funny.

  • @addictableAble You're supposed to watch the Recobbled Cut. These crap versions are only here for reference to how the film was destroyed.

  • @TheThiefArchive after watching the recobbled i have little respect for this if any

  • this is the version i remeber wathcign as a kid with my friends over adn over and over again. we rented this movie more than any other movie out there.

  • Hm, none of the Disney princesses ever said they were pretty out loud. I personally think Jasmine is prettier, even though Princess Yum Yum wears way more accessories than Jasmine. I like the movement of the characters and the animation of the flowers. I wonder why I have never heard of this film until now.

  • i love this movie. but i grew up on the disney version. so the change in actors voices annoys me.

  • This version doesn't complare to the original...But at least it's better then the "Arabian Nights" crap. Oh god, I watched 2 minutes of that version and wanted to throw my computer out the window.

  • That song is absolutely horrendous.

  • I LOVED this movie as a child! I've been looking for it every where!

  • This is really pretty and awesome. If this is one of the bad editions, the restored version must be amazing. Does anyone know anything about this version? I thought the lamer releases were called Arabian Knight and the Princess and the Cobbler, but this one said The Theif and the Cobbler at the beginning. Does anyone know?

  • This is garbage compared to the restored Recobbled Cut. Also viewable on Youtube.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheThiefArchive This version is not that bad when compared to Arabian Knight.
