What a tragedy...this sort of event stays ingrained in your memory forever...Who can say they do not remember what they were doing when they heard the news of her passing??? I shall never forget that day....
@koonkei Come on! It is obvious the Queen likes Camilla. The Queen broke 2000 years of history and allowed her son to marry a Harlot- not that he is any better! They are just happy Dianna could not be present for her sons wedding! The real question? If only Camilla or Dianna could be present- who would charles invite? We know William would want his mother!~
Wow, the bagpipes made me cry. So powerful. I was 7 when she passed away, and watched the funeral with my sisters and mom. Such a sad day. We all watched the wedding of Prince William and Cathrine yesterday. It was a much better day. Diana must be proud.
Naww William and Harry -3 Prince Charles and the Queen ddnt even look sad. If my ex had died i def. wulda been sad and hurt but here theres none of that
Wouldn't it be so great (for Camilla) if William and Kate named their daughter Diana, so she would then be Priness Diana of Wales, and if they got rid of primogeniture, o they didn't have a son, she would then be Queen Diana? I can't wait to see Camilla's face if that happens.
that is sooo sad, but nobody seems to be crying. I would have thought the boys would be very sad i mean it's their mom. Idk but it is just soo sad to have young children lose their mothers. like they are the ones that will do for no matter what.
This was such a sad day. Even though there were controversy about the Queen and herself (Diana) no one can deny that she was a great mum, person, princess, and activist. But, no one can deny that she was the People's Princess. And, she would have made a great Queen.
Notice the Queen bowed. You saw that, right? I love Elizabeth Regina. But I did not love her during this ordeal, UNTIL she paid her due respects, as she did here. God Bless Elizabeth Regina! May her name live forever and ever.
william walked with his head down the whole way!!! its such a shame that they re not allowed to show emotion we all know that their hearts must have been breaking!! much rescept to william and harry so brave xx
After 13 years, I'm watching this through a flood of tears. I'm still absolutely devastated by the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, a woman I loved and adored.
The Queen underestimated the love of the world for just one person, to whom she was so readily to be rid of. I do believe Tony Blair saved the monarch on this day, she may not have went willingly to pay respect, however she did. I do hope that 10 years later the world has healed from such a loss. When seeing her boys in the news, interent, or etc... Her death afforded them some privacy in their lives they may not have had. She was truly everything a person could be or should be. Di 4ever loved.
The Duchess of York looks very sad at 2:03....does anyone remeber if Sarah was still married in 1997??? I'm asking because she was standing away from the royal family.....
Diana's death touch the whole world. She was, indeed, an outstanding human being. But HM the Queen Elizabeth II showed how great she was in a gesture of such respect for Diana. She bowed. I am not monarchist and not English but I'd like to say that I also admire the Queen as much as I admired Diana. The Queen has served her Country with great dignity for decades and this is, whether we agree or disagree with many of her decisions or actions, something we should definitely keep in our minds.
I have to give it tho the royal family must have been very difficult time considering their relationship with Diana .But has always the queen put duties first ,,it will be the end of an era when she dies .
The way the media attacked Her Majesty after the this event was disgraceful. She has devoted all her life to this country and has never let us down or caused embarrassment.
@nemrudag It would be very hard in the moment to know when to bow. I believe the Queen did the best she could to pay belated tribute to the Princess. No doubt can be cast of how much she loves her grandsons.
I wish I could work for the Royal Family, as a Right hand. I could think of no greater honour then to be called friend by people who do so much for their country.
@ninatitina2 Prince Philip was walking behind the coffin with young Princes. As a matter of fact, Prince William didn't wanted to walk behind the coffin but Prince Philip told him, "one day you will regret that! Will you walk if I will walk with you?" And Prince William agreed.
@09SABBAS yah, the body language and facial expressions totally convey "oh come on! hurry up, let's get this over with!" ... and she didn't bow as the coffin passed, she bowed *before* it passed.. .the seemed to be bowing to her Royal Guard, *not* the coffin of the Queen of Hearts... i love that Diana sort of gave herself that *hoped-for* title
@ethereal51 surely you understand the reasons why the public and press were like at that time? I appreciate she wanted to look after her grandchildren however she is the queen of this country and as per her PUBLIC role - she should have made a statement earlier than the day before the funeral x
That bell is so intense. I can't describe the feeling i get when i hear it. Diana was indeed a marvulous person. It's true what they say... you dont know what you have until its gone.
@tribecatom Thank you for protecting the integrity of your chanel and don't aloud unwanted commets; I wish every one does exactely what you're doing. Thank you, and please do not remove this historical event.
I knew Diana, I held her hand, I feel so privileged, despite that, I have no words, my eyes just well up every time I see this. The world turned darker the day she died.
@scarezimoff I didn´t know her, but felt that I did. That is what was so special about her. She came into my life when I was about 10. The fairytale and the beautiful girl who was to become a princess. All girls my age were so in awe of her, and we cut our hair to look like her. I was deeply upset and felt that something precious was taken away from me and the world the day she died. I really miss her, so very much. She added such a sparkle to the world and had the most lovely smile. RIP
GOD BLESS OUR QUEEN, watching this scared me a bit. Just imagine one day our dear old Queen will die after more than 58 years of service to her nation!
The person in the public, playing the bagpipes, was go genius and so heart-felt. Thank you. True, no bagpipes or muffled drum within the congregation, but at least someone had the courtesy to do so. Thank you for uploading this.
watching the Queen bow @ :48 shows you how much power Diana held...even to a woman with whom she never really got along with; her mother in law, as well as a royal figure
she really was something you know, a 19 year old bursting on to the world scene with that bright smile and blue eyes, capturing everyone's imagination. I miss her.
I thought that the bagpiper playing was appropriate enough for this sort of occasion, had this been a proper state funeral, there would have been, bagpipes, muffled drums, funeral music, like the Queen mother had for her State Funeral in 2002.
actually the queen mother only had a ceremonial funeral as well because she was only queen consort to the contrary of Queen!!!! and everyone who cant tell the difference a state funeral instead of horses pulling the carriage its men pulling the coffin carriege!!!
As it turns out, analysis of the wreck of the car showed that Trevor's seatbelt was fully retracted at the moment of impact, they could tell by the damage to it. It was just an assumption made by a journalist at the time that he had his belt on and was repeated by other journalists who equally weren't in a position to check.
Appropriate? Appropriate? Ok Your QUEEN BOWED! Now as far as the ENTIRE royal family is concerned, Diana was the most adored WORLDWIDE! In my opinion as an American, Princess Margaret appears to be oozing with jealousy in knowing the tears shed at her own funeral will be British tears. The Globe wept for DIana. Margaret sits as stiff to this day as she did in this video. No disrespect but royalty still faces the judgment of God and there are no celebrity cards before him.
I knew that. My comment "Margaret sits as stiff to this day as she did in this video" is a reference to her stiff royal corpse. I don't buy into the belief that one should speak of the dead with respect. Respect is a reward you must earn in life.
I dont think there was any disterbances that day, just thousands of people there, to show there respects to Diana Princess of Wales, and to sign the Book's of Condolence.
Thank you for uploading this and the whole funeral. I was a kid but I still remember when I saw it on tv, that day. So many words have been spent around her life and death: When all is said and done, I still feel for a woman of value and character who died too young leaving her boys. Thank you again.
It is him indeed, you can see him in Part 1 and in the later parts (after Part 26)where he anchors the interviews and analysis after the service has concluded.
Au Contraire... she is indeed the Queen (i.e. Head of State) of those Canada and New Zealand and a few others, incluing Australia. Australia even had a referendum a few years ago on whether or not to abolish her.
That is ridiculous. She and Diana did not get on, but they both had a play in that. Diana is not totally innocent. And her son comes first anyway, as he is the prince.
Prince Harry was only a year older than I was when his mom died. I watching this ad remember looking at the coffin with the envelope with the word "Mummy" on it and my heart just ached so badly. I couldn't imagine losing my mom at that age. I know I hugged my mom a lot on that day. Though now it's been a year since my mom died. It still hurts. No matter how long it's been.
I think the most heartbreaking sight for me was that envelope on top of the coffin that said "Mummy".No parent ever imagines having to bury their own children but how in the world did those two boys ever get through this.Their mum was a beautiful young woman with so much life left to live.I think the order in which they were in the lineup was designed so that they were each surrounded closely by their male family members for support and protection as they walked behind the coffin.
GythaO, I, too, remember seeing the "Mummy" card on the little wreath. I was crying already, but seeing the closeup of that little card just broke my heart.
HM The Queen did not bow to the late Princess. Rather Her Majesty bowed to the Royal Standard which covered Diana's coffin. The custom of showing honor to the Royal Standard as the representation of the the authority of Monarchs as Sovereigns is quite established. All Kings and Queens do this honor. The Queen did not and should not have bowed to the Princess of Wales in life or in death because the princess retained an inferior rank to the monarch. The Queen's simple presence was honor enough.
Thanks, chas828, for this explanation. The "bow toward the coffin" was something that I wondered about; it didn't make sense to me that the Queen would bow to the late Princess. I found it rather disturbing at the time. Your explanation really helps.
What fool thought it would be a good idea as an novice to play the pipes. Guys like him give pipers a bad name. Often people grow a dislike of the pipes only to change their minds when heard getting played correctly and in tune.
Not really. Its common courtesy, to bow one's head to a coffin as it passes by. You'll also notice that when ever HM passes a military standard, she bows her head to it, as, like her, military standards are consecrated.
No for her boys it's not just life, it's not everyday you lose your mother and at such a young age too and what's more is they never got to tell her goodbye or anything it was such a sudden thing so it's not as if they can just get on with it and say "hey that's life" it's not that simple even today Prince William and Prince Harry both still miss her.
The Queen and Princess Margaret were chit chatting away. The Queen did indeed respectively bow as Diana passed but HRH The Princess Margaret did not I wonder why.
William and Harry are wonderful boys.Very composed and very brave.I remember crying when I saw them join the cortege. Diana would have been immensly proud of their courage on this day, probably the worst day of their lives.
The 2 boys with their father and their uncle folowing their mothers coffin. I'll never forget that.
I was the same age as Harry when Diana died. I cried watching the funeral, especially thinking about how I would feel if my mother had been taken away from me so suddenly like that.
I remember when the Queen bowed her head and my aunt remarked that her bowing was very unusal because the Queen bows for no one. I think that they were in the midst of a PR disaster with their response to her death. The Queen should be given credit for responding and showing eloquence.
I remember hearing the piper when I watched the TV almost 10 years ago. I assumed it was part of the ceremony and afterward had great trouble finding any information about it. I see it seems to have been the initiative of someone in the crowd. The song the piper played is "Abide with Me".
On bbc television tomorrow (sat 1st Sept) they are replying the entire funeral broadcast. I believe it is on around 8am on BBC3/4. Sorry if thats too vague :(
Loved more in death as she was in life.....God rest your soul our sweet Diana .

So many words have been spent around her life and death: When all is said and done, I still feel for a woman of value and character who died too young leaving her boys. Thank you again.

is the narrator David Dimbleby?
very distinct sounding voice

It is him indeed, you can see him in Part 1 and in the later parts (after Part 26)where he anchors the interviews and analysis after the service has concluded.

1st time I have ever seen the queen of England bow her head to anybody
czogg99 3 years ago 7
Well don't forget she's the Queen of the whole United Kingdom and a few other countries too, like Canada and New Zealand.
tribecatom 3 years ago
She is not queen and she was never granted the title 'princess'.
scottishnationalist 2 years ago
If she's not the queen, what is she? Old Mrs Windsor?
tribecatom 2 years ago
shes not the queen of canada or new zealand. shes only the queen of the countries that lie within the united kingdom and of course nothern ireland.
ephrayimlevi 2 years ago
Au Contraire... she is indeed the Queen (i.e. Head of State) of those Canada and New Zealand and a few others, incluing Australia. Australia even had a referendum a few years ago on whether or not to abolish her.
tribecatom 2 years ago
Our "referendum" was if we become a Republican Government, not to "abolish her."
swanie180 2 years ago
She IS queen of Canada, among a lot of other Commonwealth countries...
I see her every day on my 20 canadian dollars bills....she is head of state, which is why we have a prime minister, since Canada is a Monarchy...

Many say she was bowing her head at the royal standard draped over the coffin, not at diana.
mattbowden90 2 years ago
And do you believe them?
Carfer22 2 years ago 3
That is ridiculous. She and Diana did not get on, but they both had a play in that. Diana is not totally innocent. And her son comes first anyway, as he is the prince.

It's hard to lose a parent at any age, my Dad passed away in 2000, I was 35, as the years pass the pain lessens, i still miss him a lot.
silvermoonbeam2008 3 years ago 4
Prince Harry was only a year older than I was when his mom died. I watching this ad remember looking at the coffin with the envelope with the word "Mummy" on it and my heart just ached so badly. I couldn't imagine losing my mom at that age. I know I hugged my mom a lot on that day. Though now it's been a year since my mom died. It still hurts. No matter how long it's been.

You people should be more respectful of the whoever started playing those bagpipes. Would you do it during someone's funeral?
Evilgidgit 3 years ago 2
People sometimes do play the Bagpipes at funerals, the person playing the pipes wanted to pay tribute to Princess Diana.
silvermoonbeam2008 3 years ago 2
playing the pipes at a funeral is a common occurance - a mark of respect and honour
everything diana deserved

I think the most heartbreaking sight for me was that envelope on top of the coffin that said "Mummy".No parent ever imagines having to bury their own children but how in the world did those two boys ever get through this.Their mum was a beautiful young woman with so much life left to live.I think the order in which they were in the lineup was designed so that they were each surrounded closely by their male family members for support and protection as they walked behind the coffin.
GythaO 3 years ago 5
GythaO, I, too, remember seeing the "Mummy" card on the little wreath. I was crying already, but seeing the closeup of that little card just broke my heart.

Our Queen *did* bow to Diana, Princess of Wales. Our Queen does _not_ bow to anyone / anything. I think it was a lovely gesture.

WHO THE HELL WAS THAT BAD PIPER...?
PIPERJIM08 3 years ago
HM The Queen did not bow to the late Princess. Rather Her Majesty bowed to the Royal Standard which covered Diana's coffin. The custom of showing honor to the Royal Standard as the representation of the the authority of Monarchs as Sovereigns is quite established. All Kings and Queens do this honor. The Queen did not and should not have bowed to the Princess of Wales in life or in death because the princess retained an inferior rank to the monarch. The Queen's simple presence was honor enough.
chas828 3 years ago 5
Thanks, chas828, for this explanation. The "bow toward the coffin" was something that I wondered about; it didn't make sense to me that the Queen would bow to the late Princess. I found it rather disturbing at the time. Your explanation really helps.

What fool thought it would be a good idea as an novice to play the pipes. Guys like him give pipers a bad name. Often people grow a dislike of the pipes only to change their minds when heard getting played correctly and in tune.

Who are the soldiers with the gold trim on their uniforms? Also what house did the princess belong to?
pred178 3 years ago
The Queen bowing to Diana has been described as one of the most "unprecedented" events in the history of the Monarchy.
cronoskronos 3 years ago 2
Not really. Its common courtesy, to bow one's head to a coffin as it passes by. You'll also notice that when ever HM passes a military standard, she bows her head to it, as, like her, military standards are consecrated.
MikeTTG 2 years ago 5
Notice how Princess Margaret didn't bow her head--typical rudeness. Hell just got a little bit colder.

paladin696969 3 years ago
No for her boys it's not just life, it's not everyday you lose your mother and at such a young age too and what's more is they never got to tell her goodbye or anything it was such a sudden thing so it's not as if they can just get on with it and say "hey that's life" it's not that simple even today Prince William and Prince Harry both still miss her.

bagpipes out of tune at the first procession, was it that they could not be stopped?
the second procession in this video, has dogs barking (could they not be stopped?) in the second procession and the bell

William and Harry are wonderful boys.Very composed and very brave.I remember crying when I saw them join the cortege. Diana would have been immensly proud of their courage on this day, probably the worst day of their lives.
karrew 4 years ago 3
