My first impression was a negative one, definitely. I hate the new rating system for all the same reasons you said but I also hate it because I can't tell the rating of a video before I watch it. It also feels like everything is broken. I mean, they should at least give people to option to keep the old layout if they prefer it over the new one. That way everyone wins. If you do happen to like the new layout, then good for you! If you hate it, then revert back to the old one. It's that simple.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates the layout! I hate the new rating system, besides videos not being able to have a more accurate rating, I can't tell what the rating is unless I rate it! And the comments are a mess, has anyone noticed how thumbs down don't show up on comments? Bring back the old rating and comment system! Or better yet, go back to the old layout completely!

The reality is, instead of getting rid of problems, it has created more problems. Minor ones of course. How many of us LIKE 'dumbing down' youtube? "Thumb up or thumb down"? The star-rating system was much more meaningful for rating accordingly. Simplifying the system makes it childish and shallow based on the "like/dislike" concept. I never thought youtube would ever become closer to resembling some backwater, reject-of-a-forum that ran meaningless polls for 'feedback'.

I'm glad somebody ran a video on this. This new layout is terrible. You're right, the 5-stars were great. The new layout also hides relatively new comments for no particular reason. This appears to have been change for the sake of change. I see no practical reason for what Youtube has done.
