That's funny, because I was never told that asthma is common in Aby's, but I just took mine to the vet today (Dec 2, 2010) because of wheezing, and the vet said it was probably asthma. Until we can find a vet to do a trach scrape or whatever he called it, she is on oral liquid steroids for two weeks until mid Dec. I have tried to get her attacks on camera, but mine doesn't catch the sound very well...
my cat, about 2 years old now, does EXACTLY the same thing..he was responding to steroid shots but got one about a week ago and is not much better..taking him back tomorrow, may have to go on the inhaler..but he's worth it :)

My aby does the same thing. It is NOT asthma. The cause is hairballs. My aby is a healthy 11-year-old, and when he wheezes like that, I make sure and give him hairball food and meds.
mine does that as well once in a while. I found out that dust in the air inside the home will cause it. I try to keep the cat fur and dust to a minimum. my mother's cat had asthma but the medication that was given to her caused renal failure and she died at the age of 14.
i loved my Abby Lola, she died two days ago of a stroke, she was only 9 years old, but she had this, the vet just passed it off, but i think it added to her stress level. its not a hairball
My mau did the same thing for several weeks until my vet and I figured out it was the use of those litter crystals that was the culprit. The dust from the crystals (which are silicone) can cause lung irritation (like in humans, aka silicosis) and infection (i.e., bronchitis). My cat was fine after a week of prednisone treatment and trashing the crystals.
Thanks for posting this. I have raised Abys for 21 years and only one has had asthma. He just had labored breathing, like his sides went in and out exagerated. Are you sure that is not a hairball? I don't think asthma common in Abys at all.
Oh my God, my Aby does that too, I had always thought it was hairballs! I never knew it was common. What an eye opener this was. Aside from the attacks, he is SUCH a delight!
My red abby, Clancy, has little bouts of this - never thought it was a problem - thought it was like sneezing and we all do it. He'll be off to the vet soon!!!
Oh, I am so sorry to hear that your kitty died. I can tell you that Aby asthma not only looks like the video, but can also just be very labored breathing. I had Pennalynn (my Aby) in the vet's office just yesterday undergoing oxygen, steroid, and bronchiodialtor treatment. Apparently asthma is common in Abyssinians.
Awwww I feel bad for her. :( I hope she is much better now and you have it under control! :)

Omg! My late Abby did that too. He would do it at least once a day and we could never figure out what it was. Thanks for clearing this up for me.

you sure that's not fur balls she's choking on?
its been a while, but I remember there was something you could do about that

Is asthma infectious? Will you cat's asthma spread to you?

Good of you to take care of your cat like that. This was unpleasant to watch. You're a good person.

There isn't anything you can do when a cat is having an asthma attack. Become more educated about a topic before putting someone down
