  • thank god that fence was there alot of ppl would have died that day

  • my da was in the grand stand right there where the car hit the fence, he still has the ticket stub, after that he started working as an usher at Talladega, in 1993 he was in the grandstand right where Niel Bonnet hit the fence, he quit working there after 2006 aarons 499 and he haddent gone back untill me and him went to the 2011 aarons 499 so he was'nt there when Carl hit the fence.

  • even thou it looked like his car was going into the stands i dont think it would of because the fence kinda held it in

  • tonsof years later, this happensthe Carl Edwards :l

  • so did they fixed the fence the same day or did they call the race another day? anybody know?

  • @wes3tomcat they fixed the fence that day and finished the race

  • @NewSavedOne aite thanks man

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. XD

  • Thumbs up if you clicked this link because of Carl Edwards crash in Talladega.

  • i remember this, and cale's crash.

  • man if he'd gone through that catchfence NASCAR would still be paying off the lawsuits.

  • it took bob jenkins 2 seconds to realize that the fence was gone, it wouldve taken espn a commercial and 3 replays to even notice.

  • I'm pretty sure he hit the fence in the neighborhood of 200 m.p.h. NASCAR enforced the restrictor-plate after this race in the hope that cars would not go into the crowd. The catch fences were reinforced as well to insure the cars would stay out of the bleachers. Thank Research and Development for the safety innovations through the years

  • Hoo, look at that.. Dayum.

  • The front of the crank shaft broke off due to a harmonic balancer failure , thats what caused the tire to blow out.

I read somewhere that one fan lost an eye from debris, lots of cuts and some broken arms.

IF the car HAD gone into the crowd that would have been the end of racing as we know it .

what wit all the law suits that would have come out of it.

  • and now we have restrictor plates

  • Oh, we have a problem! A gigantic problem.

  • lol at 0:22...

  • hell a few more yeards the flag man would of got hit .

  • a friend said that he was about 240 mp/h when he crashed .. anyone knows the speed? i think that was about 205 mp/h

  • i STILL cant believe this happened twice (unless u ccount the car flying over the wall)

  • fans were prolly injured but did anyone die?

  • @cmoney7463 No, fortunately.

  • so is this post. if you dont like it, dont watch it.

  • you're gay

  • fuck you you commie bitch

  • stop being so angry! what stage of denial is anger? don't worry i think bargaining comes next and then finally acceptance, then you'll agree with my comment!!

  • without the plates these cars without the draft would ht about 230-240. in the draft, thats just too rsisky and deadly for drivers even with the safety equipment they have. possibly in the future, when things get safer, the racing will get faster. but in the draft without restrictor plates...too risky. these cars got some power, idc what you say lol

  • correct me if im wrong but i dont think a nascar has ever went 230mph under any circumstances

  • @didickcheeseburger Well Rusty Wallace did a test in 2003 or 2004 I think without a restrictor plate and he hit somthing like 230 or 240 at the end of the straightaways. But probably the closest anyone ever came was Bill Elliott when he went 212 in qualifying for this race, which means he was probably 220 going into the turns

  • @3fan4eva

it was actually 215 mph Rusty did

  • @coldplayer112233 I coulda swore I heard he went way faster

  • @3fan4eva Davey Allison was running 207 and 208 mph laps at the end by himself, pulling away for the win. The 1987 Champion Spark Plug 400 at MIS was the best race of that year. Davey Allison, Buddy Baker, Bill Elliott, Alan Kulwicki, Richard Petty, Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Bobby Allison all going for the win and trading spots lap after lap during the last 40 laps of the race. The ESPN announcers were going bonkers in the booth. Bill Elliott won the race after passing Rusty and Dale.

  • i bet the flagman needed to go change his pants after that one

  • Thank God for the fence. Who knows how many fans would've died if Bobby's car went in the stands.

  • @switchhitter08 It would've been 1955 Le Mans all over again.

  • @jiminey6969 But I've never heard of an atheist in a foxhole, much less a race car.

  • @switchhitter08

probably as many that died in that LeMans wreck in 1955. that killed like 85

  • He was close to 210 not 200

  • @hitswinton officially, Allison was 211 when his tire shredded, 177 when he hit the fence...

  • A Restrictor plate is a part that is installed into the air intake to limit air flow inot the engine.

Good idea as it limits top speed and thus energy but it has the added side effect of making large packs of cars going around the track at close to 200 miles per hour.

  • If they didn't have the plates, cars would easily top 230+ MPH...

  • looks exactly like Carl Edwards this year.

  • not really--the only similarity is that they both hit the fence. The reason Carl got into the air is because he was hit on a sweet spot by Ryan Newman. I bet a lot of money if a rear tire shreds like Bobby's in the exact same spot, the car wouldn't go flying into the air.

  • Bobby Allison.

  • The same as Carls crash this year

  • what it is a restrictor plate?

  • wow, if u dont know, u shouldnt be a nascar fan. unless ur a n00bl3t

  • It's a device put into a nascar to limit the RPMs so that the cars don't hit dangerous speeds. The reason that they are implied is due to the fact that Daytona and Talladega are so large and steeply banked that they would otherwise hit speeds that are unsafe for nascars. Since the drivers are in the gas 100% of the time, they race really close together, which makes for another problem: The Big One, a crash that involves a lot of drivers.

  • It takes the HP down from ~830 to ~450

  • They didn't have restrictor plates then.

  • The reason they use restrictor plates now. Not that it's much better, now we just have 25 car crashes and once in a while cars still get into the fence.

  • wonder how many people that woulda killed. im guessing 25

  • This is why we have restrictor plates. Good to see it has prevented accidents like this. /sarcasm.

  • between the restrictor plate and cot nascars just getting worse every year

  • I was at this race and he almost landed in my lap! They just installed a brand new fence, if they had the old one, he would have came through!

  • this or carl edwards

  • That's a hard one.

    I say both

  • Shit! That look almost EXACTLY like Carl Edwards wreck last week, almost the same angle and I believe the exact same spot near the finish line!

  • Edwards didn't take out quite as much fence, but it sure is a similar incident. The fact that noone was killed is a testament to the safety equipment. That fence did its job.

  • Good thing too.

  • a short track near pueblo, co had a crash that compared with this. a driver named ronnie mcdowell got clipped on the backstretch and almost flipped into the pitside stands. it was used on commercials for the track called beacon hill speedway for years til the track changed ownership.

  • He just missed the flagstand, too.

  • HOLY CRAP..Was Just Like the 09 Talladega Crash last week

  • A few more feet and the flagman would be dead.

  • All the more reason to get rid of guard railings...

  • thats funny

  • You are sick if you think that was funny

  • im not a nascar fan but i think they should re inforce their guard fences even more after what i seen on sunday lol.

  • How many spectators were hurt in that?

  • 8-10 from what I remember, I think the worst was a women loosing an eye. I don't have the Stock car Mag. article but I'm sure it was in there.

  • i wonder what that flagger was thinking lol

  • he was probably thinking "Oh SHIT!!! That was close!

  • I don't think they had much time to think, watch them turn and cringe. YIKES!!!

  • looks almost identical to carl edwards crash yersterday

  • @fiddlenut24 thats why they compared it to this crash

  • it was the hand of god

  • I was at the race this past Sunday and it was an awesome finish. I am sorry that a few people did get hurt with some debris, however, everyone that goes, including myself, assume the risk of being injured if something like this happens. Now, because of the wreck Sunday, NASCAR will officially go down the drain because they will change everything so much that they cannot race. NASCAR was founded on good, hard racing and they have successfully screwed it up.

  • I was at the race in '87 - I was 16 at the time. I had a flashback to it while watching the race Saturday.

I remember looking at the fence in '87 wondering how the two cables that were left, kept the car from coming through. I was about row 20 and 15' to the right of the start finish line.

The postponed the race for a couple hours to repair it. And shorted the race by 20 laps as it was getting too dark.

    TAZ427

  • i agree. most nascar races are now boring because the cars get so spread out there not even racing eachother.

  • Carl's was worst, glad no one got too hurt today.

  • not hardly. Watch this video again. As the car hits the safety fence, it tears the fence down.

  • what i meant was that carl hit more than just the fence, but both are bad.

  • i agree his windshield hit the top of the wall and shattered it. lexan is over 100x stronger than glass and is bullet proof and it tore it like it was paper

  • windshields are made from lexan in the cup series, and have been since befor Bobby Allisons Crash here..

It was done not only for safety but it takes away weight from the top of the car.

  • Looking at that again, he almost took out the flag stand

  • That looked like todays race just like darrell said

  • thats the only reason i search 4 it

  • Some say Talladega was cursed by a medicine man when Jackson's army pushed his tribe off the land where the track sits on. I believe it after what happened today.

  • agreed, the track is actually built on that Indian tribe's burial ground, makes you wonder

  • The finish of the NSC (Sprint Cup) race today had Brad Keselowski getting into the left rear of Carl Edwards' car, Edwards going slightly airbone, Ryan Newman hitting Edwards WHILE airborne, and Edwards hitting the fence in a manner similar to this one. Keselowski won, Dale Jr got second, Newman was third, and Edwards crossed the finish line ON FOOT and ended up 24th.

  • It was incredible that Edwards' car didn't take out the fence, as high as he flew into it.

  • This shows that these teams can go fast enough to fly and be safe too, and that the France family really cares for the fans

  • i love the improvments nascar made on everything...too bad they wont get rid of the cot

  • Bobby was a great driver...he was my dads favorite.

  • The people sitting there didnt have time to be scared of what happened. It was over and done before they could turn around. All the people who said they would've freaked out if they were sitting there, obviously have never been to a race @ Talladega. When they're moving a football field length per second, you wouldn't know what hit you.

  • my dad had this on. if nascar was racing, it was on at our house. i was 16 and getting ready for work. i remember this. the race was on hold for something like two hours.

  • my dad was sittin' right there in the 7th row.he told me about just a minute ago he said then he never sat th@ close.then he sat in the last row and a guy got killed inthe indie in the last row!

  • I bet. No one died there fella.

  • At Indy in '87 (a few weeks after this Talladega race) a fan DID die when he was hit by a tire off of Tony Bettenhausen's car. I wasn't there, but was watching the race at home and remember it... And I think he WAS in the top row...

But in THIS wreck at 'Dega, there were injuries in the stands...nobody died, fortunately...

  • The fence did its job. Horiffic for the flagman I bet.

  • Imagine if he would have hit the flagman. Only a few feet further and he would have.

  • i would have pissed and shit my pants if i was in that section he almost hit.

  • I bet all those people in that area never sat there again.. Why I don't sit close to the track.

  • holy crap. imagine what it was like to be one of those fans at the torn section!!!

  • If he had wrecked a little bit forward, he would have instantly probably kill the flag man and demolish the flag stands.

  • I always wanted to see this crash.

  • When I was a kid, we lived down the street from the Allisons in Hueytown and he and my dad were good friends. I remember this very well because my dad and I were supposed to be there.

I don't even want to think about what would happen if God's hand hadn't been on that car.

  • um... did he die?

  • no he didnt, but he seriously doesnt remember his career at all because of wrecks like this. he barely remembers davey

  • Most of his memory loss is due to a wreck the next year at Pocono, not this crash

  • I was at the Pocono race when he had the bad wreck...but never knew how bad it was until after the race. The worst part about Bobby losing his memory was that he couldn't remember his 1-2 finish with Davey in the Daytona 500.

  • love them engine sounds

  • I say They should make the COT's run at tally & tona run like they did in 2000(exept at the Tona 500- 2001)

  • WHAT????????!!!!

  • Learn to spell first of all its Talladega(Dega)

    then Daytona

  • Did anyone in the crowd get hurt in this wreck? It seems like all of that debris traveling at 200 MPH would be rather dangerous...

  • A few people got hurt, including one lady who lost her eye, but for the most part, a lot fewer people got hurt than you would think, with all that debris flying around.

  • Bobby's wrecked caused the plates to be on the cars-he then won the first plate race at Daytona in 1988.

  • Thanks for putting this back on youtube.

  • my relative took a beating

  • now we have boring restictorplate racing

  • With the big one involved. Tight packs causes multi-car wrecks.

  • its not boring

  • isnt this the crash that made them put R.plates on them?....think elliot quallied at 210mph!

  • 212.809mph to be exact!!

  • wow, that's amazing! I've seen this before but not like with this live footage. It's unbelieveable what the fence did...it's a good thing! I know over the years they made them alot sturdier! 'member the incident with Neil Bonnett at Dega in 93 in the DieHard 500? all 4 wheels bounced off the fence!! and it pretty much stayed intact..although they did have to repair it but the damage was alot smaller..

  • Don't forget, Ricky Horton went out of the track at turn one during the same race in 1993 and Ricky Craven's big crash catching the fence during the big one during the '96 Winston 500.

  • Ty for putting this back on youtube.

  • I remember this being the first time I had ever seen a red flag displayed that quickly.

  • i always wonder what its like to be in the drivers seat when something that big is happing

  • yea but what about when you're in the stands and u see that car go airborne and u think "o my god i'm about to die"

  • People in the stands?!? How about the flagman? That tire blows a couple tenths of a second later, and the flagman wont be worrying about whether to display a yellow or red flag.

  • Nice job getting a live vid of the crash. Wanted to see a live one as the crash happened.
