my da was in the grand stand right there where the car hit the fence, he still has the ticket stub, after that he started working as an usher at Talladega, in 1993 he was in the grandstand right where Niel Bonnet hit the fence, he quit working there after 2006 aarons 499 and he haddent gone back untill me and him went to the 2011 aarons 499 so he was'nt there when Carl hit the fence.
I'm pretty sure he hit the fence in the neighborhood of 200 m.p.h. NASCAR enforced the restrictor-plate after this race in the hope that cars would not go into the crowd. The catch fences were reinforced as well to insure the cars would stay out of the bleachers. Thank Research and Development for the safety innovations through the years
stop being so angry! what stage of denial is anger? don't worry i think bargaining comes next and then finally acceptance, then you'll agree with my comment!!
without the plates these cars without the draft would ht about 230-240. in the draft, thats just too rsisky and deadly for drivers even with the safety equipment they have. possibly in the future, when things get safer, the racing will get faster. but in the draft without restrictor plates...too risky. these cars got some power, idc what you say lol
@didickcheeseburger Well Rusty Wallace did a test in 2003 or 2004 I think without a restrictor plate and he hit somthing like 230 or 240 at the end of the straightaways. But probably the closest anyone ever came was Bill Elliott when he went 212 in qualifying for this race, which means he was probably 220 going into the turns
@3fan4eva Davey Allison was running 207 and 208 mph laps at the end by himself, pulling away for the win. The 1987 Champion Spark Plug 400 at MIS was the best race of that year. Davey Allison, Buddy Baker, Bill Elliott, Alan Kulwicki, Richard Petty, Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace and Bobby Allison all going for the win and trading spots lap after lap during the last 40 laps of the race. The ESPN announcers were going bonkers in the booth. Bill Elliott won the race after passing Rusty and Dale.
A Restrictor plate is a part that is installed into the air intake to limit air flow inot the engine.
Good idea as it limits top speed and thus energy but it has the added side effect of making large packs of cars going around the track at close to 200 miles per hour.
not really--the only similarity is that they both hit the fence. The reason Carl got into the air is because he was hit on a sweet spot by Ryan Newman. I bet a lot of money if a rear tire shreds like Bobby's in the exact same spot, the car wouldn't go flying into the air.
It's a device put into a nascar to limit the RPMs so that the cars don't hit dangerous speeds. The reason that they are implied is due to the fact that Daytona and Talladega are so large and steeply banked that they would otherwise hit speeds that are unsafe for nascars. Since the drivers are in the gas 100% of the time, they race really close together, which makes for another problem: The Big One, a crash that involves a lot of drivers.
The reason they use restrictor plates now. Not that it's much better, now we just have 25 car crashes and once in a while cars still get into the fence.
Edwards didn't take out quite as much fence, but it sure is a similar incident. The fact that noone was killed is a testament to the safety equipment. That fence did its job.
a short track near pueblo, co had a crash that compared with this. a driver named ronnie mcdowell got clipped on the backstretch and almost flipped into the pitside stands. it was used on commercials for the track called beacon hill speedway for years til the track changed ownership.
I was at the race this past Sunday and it was an awesome finish. I am sorry that a few people did get hurt with some debris, however, everyone that goes, including myself, assume the risk of being injured if something like this happens. Now, because of the wreck Sunday, NASCAR will officially go down the drain because they will change everything so much that they cannot race. NASCAR was founded on good, hard racing and they have successfully screwed it up.
I was at the race in '87 - I was 16 at the time. I had a flashback to it while watching the race Saturday.
I remember looking at the fence in '87 wondering how the two cables that were left, kept the car from coming through. I was about row 20 and 15' to the right of the start finish line.
The postponed the race for a couple hours to repair it. And shorted the race by 20 laps as it was getting too dark.
i agree his windshield hit the top of the wall and shattered it. lexan is over 100x stronger than glass and is bullet proof and it tore it like it was paper
Some say Talladega was cursed by a medicine man when Jackson's army pushed his tribe off the land where the track sits on. I believe it after what happened today.
The finish of the NSC (Sprint Cup) race today had Brad Keselowski getting into the left rear of Carl Edwards' car, Edwards going slightly airbone, Ryan Newman hitting Edwards WHILE airborne, and Edwards hitting the fence in a manner similar to this one. Keselowski won, Dale Jr got second, Newman was third, and Edwards crossed the finish line ON FOOT and ended up 24th.
The people sitting there didnt have time to be scared of what happened. It was over and done before they could turn around. All the people who said they would've freaked out if they were sitting there, obviously have never been to a race @ Talladega. When they're moving a football field length per second, you wouldn't know what hit you.
my dad had this on. if nascar was racing, it was on at our house. i was 16 and getting ready for work. i remember this. the race was on hold for something like two hours.
my dad was sittin' right there in the 7th row.he told me about just a minute ago he said then he never sat th@ close.then he sat in the last row and a guy got killed inthe indie in the last row!
At Indy in '87 (a few weeks after this Talladega race) a fan DID die when he was hit by a tire off of Tony Bettenhausen's car. I wasn't there, but was watching the race at home and remember it... And I think he WAS in the top row...
But in THIS wreck at 'Dega, there were injuries in the stands...nobody died, fortunately...
When I was a kid, we lived down the street from the Allisons in Hueytown and he and my dad were good friends. I remember this very well because my dad and I were supposed to be there.
I don't even want to think about what would happen if God's hand hadn't been on that car.
I was at the Pocono race when he had the bad wreck...but never knew how bad it was until after the race. The worst part about Bobby losing his memory was that he couldn't remember his 1-2 finish with Davey in the Daytona 500.
A few people got hurt, including one lady who lost her eye, but for the most part, a lot fewer people got hurt than you would think, with all that debris flying around.
wow, that's amazing! I've seen this before but not like with this live footage. It's unbelieveable what the fence did...it's a good thing! I know over the years they made them alot sturdier! 'member the incident with Neil Bonnett at Dega in 93 in the DieHard 500? all 4 wheels bounced off the fence!! and it pretty much stayed intact..although they did have to repair it but the damage was alot smaller..
Don't forget, Ricky Horton went out of the track at turn one during the same race in 1993 and Ricky Craven's big crash catching the fence during the big one during the '96 Winston 500.

The front of the crank shaft broke off due to a harmonic balancer failure , thats what caused the tire to blow out.
I read somewhere that one fan lost an eye from debris, lots of cuts and some broken arms.
IF the car HAD gone into the crowd that would have been the end of racing as we know it .
what wit all the law suits that would have come out of it.
