I don't blame the factory workers, I blame the human's that create this demand, whether it be horses, cows or pigs, Etc. People are too far removed from their meat. All meat eaters should be required to kill, clean and prepare their own animals for eating. The days of factory farming should end now.

I believe that this is a very humane methode in which to run a slaughter house. There are a lot of places out there that feel killing the animal be4 the butchering actually begins, is a waste of money, so they are not shot in the head be4 their throats are cut and the dismemberment begins. I am all for the eating of animals because they taste good but there is a humane way to butcher them and this vid seems ok to me in that aspect.

The point is that no living thing should be made to suffer like that. There are humane ways of euthanizing animals. Cramming them into a blood-splattered box and shooting a bolt into their brain while they thrash in terror is not one of them.
The horses are not "stunned" it's a 5 inch bolt in the head. They die, instantly. Yes they'll shake and what not, but that's a reflex. If you shot anything in the head, it will shake after it hits the ground. This is still more humane than how your hamburgers are made. Now that horse slaughter is outlawed in the US, thousands of horses will be starved, instead of dying a quick death.
Although a death which involves being lead into a cold warehouse and trapped in a box to be shot in the head isn't a glorious death, you do have a point. Most slaughter houses are much more brutal than this.
If a few of you don't believe that, look up a few undercover PETA investigations involving cattle, chicken, and pig (just to name a few) deaths.

The problem is that captive bolt guns, although they are obviously stunning these horses, do not necessarily knock them out. This means that these horses may be getting hit in the head and then while stunned and unable to move having a knife stuck in their necks, feeling it the whole time.

honestly, this is one of the most humane horse slaughters i've seen. they ensured the animal was dead, or at least not feeling ANYTHING before stringing them up. all the horses in line look curious and fairly relaxed, not frightened or anything. i'll bet you any amount of money mexican slaughterhouses don't pay so much attention to the horses sent there! cut down on breeding horses, and there won't be a need for this. it's as simple as that.
it's to ensure it's dead so there's no suffering later on down the line. i wish foreign slaughterhouses would be so sure, but they're not. they don't care, so long as the animal doesn't kick them

French eat horse meat as far as i know as i went there as a child and they offered it to me, i didnt know what it was until they told me, i went mad after they did. But people can eat it if they want. and if you've ever eaten a french frankfurter then you have eaten horse. It says on the packet.

horse meat is considered a delicacy in many countries throughout europe. what is normal for u is thought of as disgusting to other people in the world & vise versa. an ex of which is that puffins are considered very cute birds & someone in the states would likely freak if you said that you ate one(you can find some in alaska). most are actually found in iceland and are considered a great delicacy. if you were there & you told someone that you ate puffin, it would just show that you are well off

I agree that this is terrible, I just want to put things in a little perspective. Horses aren't kept as pets for everyone. People eat Guinea Pigs in South America, Llamas too. I've heard of snakes, alligators, cats, dogs, all kinds of animals being eaten in different parts of the world and it is considered normal. Just because it's not the life you live doesn't mean it's wrong for other people to live theirs differently. That being said, this video was really really sad. I myself love horses.
There are literally THOUSANDS of unwanted horses in America today. Slaughter has been banned. Euthanasia is too expensive. Rescue groups are full. Owners cannot sell or afford to keep their horses in the current economy, so they are left to starve.

why don´t they use cartridge driven captive bolt guns like we do here in Belgium ? Much easier to place on the horses forehead and penetrates the skull much better. You pull the trigger - bang ! and they are done. I´m stunning up to 60 horses a day in the killing chute and rarely need more than one shot to get them down. It´s really humane and painless if you do it right, believe me !!
I am doing the same job here in Belgium but I get them knocked with one shot as we use hand held bolt stunners. They are much easier to place in the correct position on the horses forehead and penetrate the skull much better. With the large gun in the video aiming is difficult so the guy still makes a good job.

The horses are not "stunned" it's a 5 inch bolt in the head. They die, instantly. Yes they'll shake and what not, but that's a reflex. If you shot anything in the head, it will shake after it hits the ground. This is still more humane than how your hamburgers are made. Now that horse slaughter is outlawed in the US, thousands of horses will be starved, instead of dying a quick death.

Although a death which involves being lead into a cold warehouse and trapped in a box to be shot in the head isn't a glorious death, you do have a point. Most slaughter houses are much more brutal than this.
If a few of you don't believe that, look up a few undercover PETA investigations involving cattle, chicken, and pig (just to name a few) deaths.

Horses are instincually terrified of blood and you can see it everywhere here. Also,the 1st horse was hit in the shoulder with the captive bolt gun which is illegal. The REAL CULPRITS HERE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO BREED HORSES AND THEN SELL THEM. Every horse owner makes a conscious decision to breed their mare/stallion for money. The problem is that captive bolt guns, although they are obviously stunning these horses, do not necessarily knock them out. This means that these horses may be getting hit in the head and then while stunned and unable to move having a knife stuck in their necks, feeling it the whole time.

honestly, this is one of the most humane horse slaughters i've seen. they ensured the animal was dead, or at least not feeling ANYTHING before stringing them up. all the horses in line look curious and fairly relaxed, not frightened or anything. i'll bet you any amount of money mexican slaughterhouses don't pay so much attention to the horses sent there! cut down on breeding horses, and there won't be a need for this. it's as simple as that.

horse meat is considered a delicacy in many countries throughout europe. what is normal for u is thought of as disgusting to other people in the world & vise versa. an ex of which is that puffins are considered very cute birds & someone in the states would likely freak if you said that you ate one(you can find some in alaska). most are actually found in iceland and are considered a great delicacy. if you were there & you told someone that you ate puffin, it would just show that you are well off

I agree that this is terrible, I just want to put things in a little perspective. Horses aren't kept as pets for everyone. People eat Guinea Pigs in South America, Llamas too. I've heard of snakes, alligators, cats, dogs, all kinds of animals being eaten in different parts of the world and it is considered normal. Just because it's not the life you live doesn't mean it's wrong for other people to live theirs differently. That being said, this video was really really sad. I myself love horses.

There are literally THOUSANDS of unwanted horses in America today. Slaughter has been banned. Euthanasia is too expensive. Rescue groups are full. Owners cannot sell or afford to keep their horses in the current economy, so they are left to starve.
Slaughter isn't pretty, but at least it's quick. What else do you people suggest be done with the glut of abandoned, unwanted, starving horses in this country? You got a better idea?

why don´t they use cartridge driven captive bolt guns like we do here in Belgium ? Much easier to place on the horses forehead and penetrates the skull much better. You pull the trigger - bang ! and they are done. I´m stunning up to 60 horses a day in the killing chute and rarely need more than one shot to get them down. It´s really humane and painless if you do it right, believe me !!

I am doing the same job here in Belgium but I get them knocked with one shot as we use hand held bolt stunners. They are much easier to place in the correct position on the horses forehead and penetrate the skull much better. With the large gun in the video aiming is difficult so the guy still makes a good job.
We love horse meat here so horse slaughter is something completely normal.
It looks worse than it is, the horses dont even hear the bang when I press the trigger, it´s really humane!

Thanks for posting. In many cultures, people do eat horse meat. Unless you are a vegetarian, you probably eat chicken, pigs, cows and other animals, no less beautiful in nature, than the horse. Unless there is something more to this video, I can't see where the horses are being mistreated before being slaughtered. I'm trying to look at this in an objecive way. I've never eaten horse meat in my life. Not sure about what's in my pet's food, though.
