Actually, Pokèmon Mystery Dungeon fits into one genre very neatly, a genre that has been around for around 30 years. That genre is named a Rogue-like, so named by the first game that had that type of gameplay, Rogue. It was one of the first genres, actually. It was popular on college Unix machines in the early-to-mid 1980's. Procedurally generated dungeons were there. Leveling up, items, movement style, all there.
