  • What music. Please don't tell me this is not magnificent. Perfect

  • Amazing how far we have come as far as interpreting Bach and baroque music in general...

  • Bach is so righteous.

  • I came here after spending all day reading and writing about and discussing politics and economics. Within seconds, the genius that was, is and ever will be Bach had put the world to rights. There is harmony in the universe and Bach's music is my proof.

  • is he chewing gum?

  • why to sing while recording and not in concert? I m not a big fan of recordings when i can hear him singing in the bach !

    I dont get it !

  • @xbob1966

Gould was an excellent Bach interpretter. However, he was also very excentric. I'm sure he was told many times to not sing while recording, but alas, he still did.

  • @earwasel2 maybe a bit egoexentric , i think bach would have deserve a better recording ;)

  • Glenn Gould is my idol.

  • This sounds surprisingly good with the piano, but I still prefer the violin version

  • Nice MALMSTEEN cover with classical instruments!! :D :P XD. just joking.

  • Only ONE Glenn Gould!! I know the angels are dancing in heaven!!:)

  • This is Toronto Symphony

  • Good piece I like 1:00

  • Muchas gracias por compartirlo.

  • Genius. Perfect. What a piece. Glenn Gould is the music he plays

  • 61 dislikes? Really!?...

  • Look as he mouths each note he plays! lmfao

  • ...And the man is not counting, or keeping time. He's reciting dialogue of the story he is telling.

  • If you love this video have a look at: Well Tempered Joy

  • i sadden at the thought that many many poor, poor people will waste their lives (musically speaking, at least) away totally ignorant of the beauty and passion of J. S. Bach

  • @LACO777alessio thats part of the beauty of being one of the people who knows.

Some people just don't know, and they will always be ignorant, but even if they were exposed to Bach, their ignorance would not allow them to have any sort of desire to understand nor appreciate, and thus they fall into the deadly trap of crappy music.

doomed to listen to lady gaga forever. sad story.

I've never heard this piece with Piano in it, just violins, this is great.

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe I agree. Sad story.

  • @SqueezeMyLemonBabe Well, it's a piano concerto :D. (Although I'm sure it was arranged that way) - and I completely agree with you.

  • Glenn Gould is nothing special, he had a natural talent and manipulated it in the right way.

  • baroque is bitchin

  • Comment peut-on ne pas aimer ce génie du clavier !

  • @Shaywebber now thats complete bullshit, why would an orchestra ask someone to record a piece one night before the event? ^^ and what do you know about when he had the practiced the piece last time?

  • 60 people are...they are stupii....forget it!

  • I will never get over how he always mouths "something" while he plays...so odd

  • @machngunjoe... not odd at all if your know that his mother pushed him to be a singer before he showed his full talent for piano.. as a musician I often have other lines of a score going through my head whilst I'm playing my own line... but it's not possible for me to 'mouth' them as I play wind instruments.. . it's just how we all concentrate... very few sit doing nothing whilst they play!!

  • Thank God for giving us Bach! There is nothing else in life that can be compared to this masterpiece. All heaven lies in this music.

  • @AntiBaltak well I sort of agree but I have found other pieces by other composers over the years which seem to hit the right spot in my soul... I'm just grateful for listening to and playing, however badly, many of the classic works by our great composers.. but then, those I like and enjoy aren't always the same for someone else

  • "sem Bach, Deus seria apenas um mero coadjuvante"

  • So expressive!!! I love the melody. My favourite is 1:54 - 2:00...

  • My thought: Amazing.

My 4 year old daughter's thought: How many violins do they need?

  • No!

  • @1Thompsonmusic . Body/facial expressions are typically a result of anxiety. Mr. Gould was very anxious when playing "live" and in front of cameras. This was a way of phycologically coping with his anxiety. While often viewed as strange or subject to criticism by other, this is not atypical behaviour; every person will exhibit some form of external release when anxious. I would also add that his is completely subconscious and Mr. Gould was never fully aware of it, including his humming.

  • @Frozentoes1 100% correct!! I just think it makes him seem less genius and more human. I'd have loved to have been able to see him live... I recently watched a film made of the recorder ensemble I belong to and was shocked to see some of my own actions whilst playing which I'd been unware of for years!! The profs are no different

  • @Frozentoes1

Nice try, Youtube psychologist. When one creates music, paints, dances, or almost any other form or art, there is usually drive to use different tools to express the feeling you are interpreting into art. For example, if one is creating musical composition, they may use dancing, humming, drawing as supportive tools. Socially anxious person, like me, is more likely to be more restrained and embarrassed by seeming quirky when performing publicly, which harms performance.

  • @humppamonsteri If you are so certain of yourself, perhaps you could provide us with emperical evidence to support your assertions. Then again, don't bother - you are an intellectual lightweight not to be taken seriously as evidenced by your use of sarcasm when disagreeing with and addressing others. Should you be interested in educating yourself about Gould, I would suggest Glenn Gould: Music and Mind by Geoffrey Payzant. However, it may be too difficult for you to understand.

  • @Frozentoes1

How I phrased what said was unnecessarily snarky, I'm sorry for that. I'm not questioning anyone's intellectuality, but personal experiences. I've met many people with general mental problems, drug and autistic spectrum problems and I have struggled with my social anxiety. I don't see direct connection with Gould's quirks while playing with anxiety here, even if he had such "problems". To me it very much seems living with the music and expressing it with whole body.

  • Oui!

  • have a look The madness of genius Glenn Gould english version and for the french one go to Le génie et la passion

  • His piano playing is like the 18th century guitar prodigy Wilhelm deCastro. And I must say his facial tics lack the tensile strength displayed by Football virtuoso Benardo Rothlisberger of the Pittsburgh Civil Chorale. Aside from that, I think we can send Mr. Gould straight to wardrobe.

  • @badjaycl - and of course you are trying to sound more intellectual than you are.

  • @AlsatianCousin Indubitably, my good cousin. One must always be on guard for the "real" intellectuals. They skulk around the fringes of our pure minions, such as Gould, and proffer their so-called opinions in liberal journals such as the New York Review of Books. We are on to them, of course, and by standing Visigoth-like, these "barbarians at the gate" shall receive their come-uppance. Long live Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain and Alfred E. Neuman!

  • @badjaycl - it would remain most unfortunate from my meager dispassionate point of view if you were ever to gather the remains of your dignity by simply re-attacking your preposed disposition which was already false to begin with. Finland thanks you. English is my 3rd language so I can no longer be bothered, I fear I might be upper-handed...

  • @AlsatianCousin Adios, my amigo, restez tranquil!

  • @badjaycl what rot.... how on earth would you know how Wilhelm de Castro playing his guitar in the 1700's??? were you there??? and pleeeeeease....can we get through at least ONE day in our lives without having football, English or American, shoved down our throats?? but then that might explain your comments regarding Glenn Gould... jocks tend not to be very bright!!

  • Love his face

  • Bach IS alive!

  • Best part 0:59

  • And I thought I could play Bach O.O

  • drew carrey is so good in this!

  • this composition is fantastic

  • Glenn Gould must have practiced at least 10 hours per day

  • @caddencadden No he never practices more than 3 hours a day. He said he didn´t need to play the piano to learn a piece and that he couldn´t understand how someone needs so much time to practicing. He spend month without playing, only playing the music in his head. Also he said that he didn´t really like the piano, because he couldn´t play the music as it was in his head. You can read this in the book: A Romance on Three Legs: Glenn Gould's Obsessive Quest for the Perfect Piano!

  • Espetacular : D

  • Gould's playing is so moving because he was in touch with a Higher Energy. He was pure genius expressing the spiritual dimension through his piano playing.

Just to listen to Gould is a life changing experience.

    Thank you, Mr.Gould!!

  • people who hate this are just jealous to not being able to play like that

  • in touch with god

  • @shaywebber The comment I made about Gould that he hadn't played the piece in a lifetime goes on the emperor concerto. Sorry for mistake.Only considering Gould's genius it could have been true in this case too !

  • Fact1 : Gould was asked to perform this the night before

Fact2 : He hadn't practised the piece for about a lifetime

Fact3 : He performs it like no one else can or ever could.

Conclusion : A treasure of a person who will forever be missed.

  • @Shaywebber - Fact4 - Gould had played this zounds of times before.

  • @Shaywebber Fact3: When Bach himself played this it would have made Glenn look like a novice

  • @EITrollo fuck you

  • @xtreamgamer100 then fuck all music! (btw, that shit couldn't be more inaccurate)

  • @xtreamgamer100

Classical music is not the "first kind of music created" by a long shot, humans have been making music for thousand of years

  • @carswell98 I agree only I couldn't formulate my words as well as you have. Thanks (*_*)

  • @xtreamgamer100 well of course it was... but I'm betting the Egyptians and civilisations before them had their own music too only we have not way of knowing what it may have sounded like. but there is classical and classic depending on which part of the world you live in.. those of us in Europe are used to Bach, Telemann, Schubert, Purcell etc. but the Japanese and Chinese cultures have their own classics as to eastern europe, all of which sound a tad strange to our ears

  • increible!! i love bach

  • FUCKING AWESOME! Music to sink your teeth in and refresh your soul at the same time. Like sucking up a thick vanilla poem shake through a huge straw...my taste buds are exploding rainbows of joy.

  • @kesagatame Hahaha yeah something like that !!!!!!!!!!! Words are not enough to describe such a beauty...

  • @kesagatame

Wow Spongebob. I didnt know you like classical music too!

  • @kesagatame what a vulgar and unsophisticated response to a piece of spiritual and immaterial music. vanilla shake, what the fuck...

  • @EITrollo you might consider his/her remarks vulgar and unsophisticated but who really cares how he/she expresses themselves... it's just obvious they enjoy Glenn Gould's rendition of the Bach piece or just listening to Bach being played. I'm a classical musician and can empathise with likening listening or playing music to food stuffs or colours.. kesagatame obviously enjoys vanilla milkshakes (I prefer chocolate!) and any music appreciation can be likened to our favourite foodstuffs

  • @suzeb50 quit classical music, go work in fagdonald's or in a slaughterhouse. my advice.

  • @EITrollo what an incredibly intellectual piece of advice!! I guess you know all about being vulgar and unsophisticated. Perhaps YOU might consider that each of has the right to hold our own opinion, expressing them in our own individually unique (even you!) My advice you you? Get a life!

  • @suzeb50 not the most grammatically advanced sentence i have ever come across but i understood your point. you lose anyway. his comparison WAS vulgar and unsophisticated and your defense of his argument was weak. give up pal, you're not up to my level, just give up and enjoy your milkshake. *kisses*

  • 3:12 HIPSTER VIOLINIST! ahaahahaha

  • Superb. Can this ever be better played. TY stephen for posting.

  • Now that what I call music !

  • BORGORE brought me HERE!

  • Magnificant!!! So much power and intensity... And a great melody...

  • Anyone have and Grey Poupon?

  • You know, I love other genres of orchestral music (classical, romantic, impressionism, etc.). And I love jazz. And I love the best of rock. And I can appreciate some hip hop. But there's no music I love more than baroque. And there's no baroque composer I love as much as J.S. Bach. So for me, his is the best music of all time.

  • @wordzly It's the same way with me. Usually I only like hip hop in a humorous way though.

  • @wordzly If was asked, i would say excactly the same words. As if you are describong me. :)

  • muito bom

  • Bach foi o maior.

  • actually this is harpsichord concerto

  • @TonyWRO Obvious comment is obvious.

  • @TonyWRO Sure! Bach didn't write for a piano, it has been invented a little bit later ))

  • @TonyWRO Your point being . . . ? Ah, I see it now--that Glenn's genius wasn't limited to playing, he was also a genius at transposing, but you know those universal polymaths--they're simply the best at everything they do!

  • a genius

  • @Stebanick Yes, he was a sort of genius :)

  • @Stebanick If Mozart was a genius, Bach is definitely beyond genius.

  • Actually It's Concerto For Violin in A Minor

  • Gould way playing of Bach, although superlative in many respects, is outdated, just like the recording of Joachim's playing the Bach violin sonata... Scott Ross went as far as saying that Gould didn't understand Bach. At the time I thought he was clearly exaggerating, but I now have to agree with him ;-) For those in perennial awe of Gould, and who cannot stand any criticism: I have everything he ever recorded - and still listen to it with immense pleasure :-)

  • It's bach a minor violin concerto :S

  • @cellisto1995 Well, it's so complicated :)

  • @JDawgBro86 That has to be the most retarded comment ever posted on YouTube, for so many reasons: deliberately typed with "I'm a mouth-breathing 14-year old who thinks I'm hot shit" spelling and grammar, no point to your comment, no telling what the hell you're trying to say anyway, and, from what little sense we can make of anything you typed, it's clearly disrespectful, ignorant of music, culture, and facts, and... should I go on?

  • @beakt No, don't go on. We already have a pretty clear impression of the arrogant, intolerant, and narrow person you are. JDawgBro86 is entitled to his opinion, and to express it, just as much as you are. Were you once ignorant of music, culture, and facts (and I am not agreeing with you that JDawgBro86 is) or were you born 'perfect in every way'?

  • @blakewater Got me. You're right. I was once ignorant of music, culture, and facts, and I typed comments like "dis sum dood got dieded and shiznit lol 4 realz" on videos of great artists performing their craft. Now that I've grown to be perfect in every way, I'm arrogant, intolerant, and narrow, and think that no one is entitled to their opinion or to express it. Good call! You're a great judge of character, even from reading just one YouTube comment, and you certainly put me in my place.

  • @beakt I had a great role model sir.

  • Glenn has given every note a lyric, thus keeping them distinct, even, separate. Genius in action. For the ignorant, it takes years of practice to gain great strength, control, to play Bach correctly.

    Thank you for posting.

  • A delectable ethereal performance how Bach must have heard it in his divine ear

  • What is the pianist saying during the whole song?

  • @Flockaduck He is humming the melody to himself..

  • i swear to god if a violin player ever says again that bach is his favorite im gonna fucking kill him PIANO DOES ALL THE WORK AND VIOLIN IS MERELY ESCORDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am in love with that man and his way of playing. He is amazing.

  • 55 people never learnt how to read music

  • If you are one of the 55 who dislikes this you should be very worried.

How can you not hear how great this music is.

    Played to perfection.

  • genius =)

  • Comment removed

  • How can you not love his obvious passion for the piano!!!! People that call him a freak just don't understand real talent and passion for the classical music!

  • He's not a freak. He's a super-freak, he gets super freaky yow!

  • FREAKKK!

  • @mikeflanny22 better a FREAKK! than an ASSHOLEE!

  • Only Art Tatum could play piano marginally better

  • @paulostroff99 Art Tatum's recording of a Chopin waltz reveals that his little fingers were not developed for classical music. In fact, the technique he used is called the 'bowling ball' technique because it emphasizes the thumb, index and middle fingers as evidenced by his endless use of pentonic scales. As spectacular as he was with his version of jazz piano, his is no match for the best of the classical pianists as evidenced by his atrocious rendering of a little Chopin waltz.

  • @josemagus -Pseudo intellectual responces are no match for the opinions of those such as Artur Rubinstein and other such experts on the subject.Rubinstein and other noted performers took in performances on Tatum whenever possible to so do.For the record A.R.was quoted as saying that if A.T.ever decided tyo take up classical piano playing he himself would give it up.A.R.had small stubby fingers It has also been said that of any music performing only A.T.stood out as a performer by himself.

  • @paulostroff99 It was V.H. that made the comment about A.T. ever deciding to take up classical piano, not A.R. And there is nothing pseudo intellectual about objective facts. The fact is is that A.T. never took up classical piano, and his poor performance of a little Chopin waltz proves it. He may be the king of his style of jazz, but G.G. is the king of Bach, etc. And name dropping the likes of AR is no substute for correct analysis.

  • @josemagus -No,He too may have made reference to it,but it was definately Artur Rubinstein who made that statement as well as attending every concert of AT wITH OTHER PROMINENT PIANISTS,composers and conducters of note. The name dropping slur does not detract from the fact that it was indeed A.R who made that statement. It was said that of all players of music that a.t was the only one in a class of his own on an instrument-period.

  • Glenn Gould kept Bach alive!

  • @gryderz Bach is already alive, and always will be.

  • @Neonalfax no he's not, he died hundreds of years ago. Look it up if you don't believe me.

  • Back know Glenn Gould will play his notes someday wowww

  • 0:35 - Looks like he is having a conversation with the piano!

  • He was born to play BACH!!!

  • @isabelprado1978 Actually, bach is the reason why he became a musician. he loved music, and he loved bach.

  • ...um what is he saying...

  • @ChlorineHeart Gould would sing what he played

  • @angellikespie222 actually I was taught many years ago when learning to play music that if I could sing the piece then I could play it! If a musician rehearses a piece long enough, he'll eventually be able to sing it... I unfortunately need a little more time than Glenn Gould did to get a piece of music into my head! But I tend to 'sing' my scores just prior to a concert if only to get phrasing and timing correct

  • @ChlorineHeart his mother tought him to sing the notes when he was young...and he was doing that everytime playing...in other recordings you can hear him clear singing :)

    So great !

  • no one surpass gould's interpretation of bach's concerto

  • Owned. It's hope

  • we love u glenn

  • Superb! TY G.G.One of the all time greats

  • Spellbinding performance. however, y'all ought to know that he's just channelling the energies contained in that chair. It's for a good purpose, i mean good music is good music, but how are you guys failing to see his almost palpable smugness as he DECEIVES US ALL

    jk Gould is awesome

  • 54 people must not realize it's todays mainstream music they should be hating haha

  • @KelsoNfun Agreeeeeeee!!!!!!!!

  • @KelsoNfun Maybe they saw his face whilst he was playing..... he was a great pianist but I can't sand to watch him.

  • @KelsoNfun Yes. Everyone should wear hats.

  • chissa che steinway usa?

    comunque credo il cd 318.

dipende da che anna è stato registrato

  • i just noticed all of them are bald.........lol........

BTW i played this song on a international concur when i was 11...;)

  • Once you'll listen to his recordings, you'll want to listen to them over and over again :)

  • I love him. He is always so amazing.

  • This was my first serious recital piece. I miss playing

  • This gentleman plays like Bach did. What a privilege for us to hear how the maestro really sounded!

  • At least we can't hear his inane humming.

  • the more I watch of this, the more I'm convinced that Glenn Gould consists entirely of badass in its most condensed form

  • @MrAdamleightonfinger Very interesting information, thank you.

  • Why does he move his mouth like that?

  • love the honesty with which he plays this, and all of Bach

  • Excellent!

  • Can someone suggest a piano piece for me to play? I'd like to play something that's pretty, not too long and in grade 9 or 10.

  • at 0:45 the pianist is SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO damn funny!!!!

looks like George of the Jungle

  • at 0:45 the pianist is SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO damn funny!!!!

  • yyyeeeeaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No it's actually, the A minor violin concerto.

  • Is'nt this a transcription of the violin concerto in e minor ?

  • really greattttttt

  • Nice...check out Pipixcan69 to see LAGQ playing Bach (rare video in You Tube)

  • cool, I love this very much )) miss times when I playing it ((

  • just one question to break up the long paragraphs... and its one question i hope someone will answer properly... why does the pianist's lips move? its like he's either 'singing' the actual song or he's feeling the emotion in the song so much he's quivvering?

  • @TheRoseMusician

Gould is famous for his "singing" while playing the piano. He often hummed along his playing. He himself said that without humming his playing wouldnt be that good. His mother used to let him sing while practicing during childhood and he never stopped doing it
