Lead singer John Kay wrote the lyrics. He got inspired when he put the demo tape in a home stereo system he bought with the royalties from their first album. That's where he came up with the line, "I like to dream, right between my sound machine."
I like to dream yes, yes, right between my sound machine On a cloud of sound I drift in the night Any place it goes is right Goes far, flies near, to the stars away from here Well, you don't know what we can find Why don't you come with me little girl On a magic carpet ride You don't know what we can see Why don't you tell your dreams to me Fantasy will set you free Close your eyes girl Look inside girl Let the sound take you away

Live version off the old album is much better, more of a heavey rock sound to it throughout the whole album.Check it out,its the one with the wolf on the cover.Nick St. Nicolas (bassist) must have been a bit of a fruit cake because that sure is a pretty dress he's wearing.lol
@MistyMountainsky It was more that he dressed like that to PO John Kay. I heard he once appeared at a concert Steppenwolf played dressed only in rabbit ears and a jock strap. He did this to irritate Kay.
@68Forever68 He must be a bit of a bone head.Bass players are a dime a dozen.John Kay was the most talented one in the band,at least as far as song writing goes, but I must stand by my words and repeat my earlier comment. It sure is a pretty dress,LOL
@MistyMountainsky The band members affectionately or not referred to John Kay as the fuehrer. The original bass player Rushton Moreve was fired when he refused to return to California for some gigs because his wife told him that an earthquake was coming and it would make the state of California sink into the ocean.
Other antics by Nick St. Nicholas: wore dresses to concerts and gigs, played his bass loudly and out of tune. He also loved stealing John Kay's thunder.Kay hated his blonde hair.
@MistyMountainsky Michael Monarch quit because of disagreements with John Kay. It has been reported that Goldy McJohn was fired because of heavy drug use that led to extremely violent outbursts. A later member Kent Henry was fired for conflicting reasons- he didn't get along with Jerry Edmonton and/or his performances had declined because of erratic behavior. Lastly, the drummer Jerry Edmonton always seemed to be in good standing with the band.
@68Forever68 Thanks for the info.I thought I once heard about Jerry Edmonton getting killed or badly hurt in a motorcycle accident.Do you know if it's true?
In the first verse it goes, "Flies far, goes near, get the stars away from here". The second verse is "Last night I hold aladdins lamp". I still say you did a good job getting the words right though. Two thumbs up.

John Kay is German to the bone. He was born in East Prussia and his father (who he never met) died during the war.
He lived in the country until the age of 13 and speaks the language every day with his wife.
Steppenwolf originate from Canada but John will always be German.
