By the time this was made, Louis had already had alot of scar tissue on his lips from playing too much in the late 20's and early 30's. Supposedly his sound then was so very good, that he is considered the Genius of Jazz. Because of his medical issues with the lips, he was unable to sustain his speed and high notes of Jazz later, and turned to more classic commercial tunes like the one here. But, if you listen carefully, you can hear some of his genius at work. God rest you, Louis.

Hey, have you ever heard of a Jazz Funeral? They're traditional in new orleans. You should do a youtube search of "Second line New Orleans Funeral." There are lots of spiritual and jazz songs about death that are upbeat. It doesn't mean they were changed. Alot of them grew out of slave songs, which featured death as an escape from their lifestyle, like Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
