how can this type of analysis be done remotely? NASA uses light analysis to find the composition of gases that are light years away. can it be done to look for trace elements in our own atmosphere?
This can't be done remotelly. Astronomy uses absorbtion and emmision spectra...that is, the wavelengths that various elements absorb (or emmit when excited)...all you need for that, is some sensitive (wideband) light detectors and perhaps an optical system like a telescope.
