they were so damn close to making it through reentry. The period of max thermal stress on the orbiter lasts just 10 minutes. They entered this period at 8:51am.. mission control lost tracking and coms at 9:00am.

We had no idea anything was wrong until one of our wives called us about an hour later and told us Columbia never made it.
