People didnt call him "The Buddha" They probably called him "A Buddha" when translated to english, its easy to see how it could be misenterpreted. Now, i remember him saying, "Do not call me buddha for I have only reached the middle path." Also do not believe what other people say no matter who they are or what they say, not even me just read what they have written and understand it unbiasedly so that you can decide the truth for your self with no "Beliefs".
My understanding is that once one is enlightened like Buddha was, he will not be reborn or reincarnated. Once enlightened there is no longer a use for a body. To be beyond a body and exist in spirit only defines enlightenment.
