  • Hey man, been following you for a while and getting into this. Currently I'm using the Alesis module and triggering addictive drums but I'm still finding the latency to be bad. Did your firebox help or did you just pick it up for recording inputs. When you say 0 latency, I assume you mean the sound directly from the mic pre to the headphone amp (pre computer processing) so in this case the trigger signal coming back off the computer would certainly have some latency? Help! :)

  • Hi Mikey, Please check out the vids on my page for a new drum module software programme that I have created, wondering if you would like a copy to review? Thanks Lee

  • Hi Mikey,Can you have a alesis dm5 kit working with any toontrack product, and how ?Or do i have to buy the alesis i/o and scrap my module Thanks

  • when will the metal masters will be released?and how much in euro?

  • wats a good drum kit thats under 900 bucks

  • Hmm... acoustic: something from Peace, Pearl, or Ddrum. Electronic: I don't know. If you wanted, you could always buy individual RET drums and slowly build your kit up? Depending on what you want, my site can do single drums for about $380 each.

  • any alesis

  • I tried these drums, they are the kit to have! Extremely nice feel. Can't wait for the METAL MASTERS KIT "Whoa"

  • Absolutely correct! Metal Masters is going to be amazing :-)

  • Hello, if you want to output the sound to an amp/speakers, do you hook it up to the alesis or laptop? thx!!!

  • You can go from the laptop, but I would recommend an external sound card, like the Presonus Firebox. If you go to my website, you'll find out why!

    Thanks for the question!

  • Have you ever considered choking up on your sticks a little bit? Serious question actually...

  • I have... but I use 7A's, which are pretty short to start. I like to throw my sticks a bit, too.

  • I got some V Expressions packs for my TD-12. I think they might be a bit over-rated. They don't sound as hot as folks say...

  • I would highly suggest venturing into some VPT Drum Software. If you're not into the module sound anymore, I would recommend visiting my site to at least look around:

  • Hi Mikey... thanks for all of the very useful information! I have a Roland TD3, midi out into Edirol UM1 midi interface into dell laptop. I have BFD2 on the laptop. I see you are using the Alesis Trigger I/O. Does this give lower midi latency as it is direct USB to the laptop - missing out a midi-out / midi-in step as in my set-up?

  • I always go out of my Trigger Io USB. It's actually faster than MIDI, especially if you have multiple steps.

    -mikey

  • the BFD sounds like poopie. Get the DFH Superior or Superior 2.0 software.

  • Hehehe... check my other videos ;-)

    -mikey

  • I had a soundcard that gave me 4-5 millisec in latency and it was playable.. i mean the midi triggered the Superior drummer but there was a little feeling that the samples triggered a bit late.

So I bought a new soundcard the m-audio "audiophile 192" and now i am down to 2-4 millisecs of lateny much better.. the playability i awesome..

i am thinking of a firebox for my mobile studio.. but is it good?? I hear alot ocomplaints on youtube. whats the latency in millisecs?? thanx mikey/lenny

  • Firebox is great. It has 6 outputs, which is as much as I need. It doesn't add latency, so I have 2ms which is standard. Very strong. I've never had a problem with it... it actually solved my problems!

    -mikey

  • sounds terrific. whats the price? And is it for Mac or PC computers?

  • $299 from VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) and it's compatible for both!

    -mikey

  • how did you connect it to an amp?or how could you?

  • Because I use an external sound card (PreSonus FireBox), I have some outputs, which I could use to go to a mixer/powered speaker/amp.

I select the FireBox as my sound card, then I'm off!

Here, I recorded the drums to Cubase, then imported the drum track into Vegas Video.

Thanks for watching! Make sure to subscribe and check out my latest vids!

    -mikey

  • Hahaha you again... hilarious!

  • Hahaha... dude, maybe you DID watch all the videos! This is BFD1.5, by the way. Not EZdrummer. That's in different videos ;-)

    Thanks again!

  • Great vid. YouTube needs more videos like this. Very good quality stuff. It's surprisingly hard to find proper videos that demonstrate V-Drums properly.

How would you say this setup compares to a Roland TD-12 kit through Superior 2.0?

  • Thanks for the message!

Firstly, these are NOT V-Drums. These are RET Drums using VPT (Virtual Percussion Technology).

To be honest, software is always going to sound the same through any kit... the BIG difference is how it feels.

It doesn't make sense to hit a mesh or rubber pad, to hear an awesome acoustic drum sound. Drummers aren't often fooled. If you hit a DRUM with DRUM HEADS, and you hear a DRUM sound... well, it just makes sense!

    I don't have my S2.0 yet... ;-)

    Thanks!

  • Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose this kit wouldn't be for me as I'm more in the market for an E-Kit to accommodate the needs of my touchy neighbours. =)

S2.0 looks and sounds fantastic. It's supposed to be shipped in June, right?

Also, I realise you aren't particularly fond of E-Kits, but have you by any chance had experience with Hart Dynamics? Their kits have also caught my eye. Sorry if this is a bit off subject, I'm just very keen to hear a professional's opinion!

  • I wanted to clear something up here.

The RET Percussion drum sets are MORE quiet than a practice pad, while giving you a much better feel than anything else on the market.

    Just our opinion, though!

    -RET Crew

  • They look and sound great. Almost enough to make me want to move to the states just to get some. =)

  • sorry 2 botter ya again u,u

i been trying 2 record with fl studio and ezdrummer, i just cant record:s when im playin the kit with my triggers, i mean. i can do it manual with the piano roll but i cant record like you do it on this video..

    how can i make it:O?

  • hey mikey i love your videos. keep doin what ur doin with V.P.T. great job in demonstrating the future of drumming

  • Hey, thanks a lot. That means so much to me.

You better subscribe, because I've got MANY more videos coming up!

  • Hi Mikey,

How is the Smartrigger hi-hat when it comes to heal splashes for that "chick" type sound? Is there any tpe of foam between the hats that prevents them from slamming together and causing mis-triggers? I couldn't find any pics of the inside of the hats. Thanks! Thanks!

  • The hi-hat works really well with either BFD or EZdrummer, however, keep in mind that I'm using an FD-8 Roland hi-hat pedal, which is what does the foot splash/chick sound.

The hi-hats have a nice foam layer to prevent re-triggering when using a regular hi-hat stand.

    Thanks for watching!

  • Great settup! Addictive drums have more dynamic expression.Cheers!

  • Actuall the snare sounds a bit machine-gun-ey when playing at maximum velocity, but that's BFD 's fault. I like Addictive Drums a lot more, and maybe DFH. It just sounds better. Nice kit though, I'm also curious if you can make a huge electronic kit with lots of triggers.

  • We've talked about this before. It's more of my fault than anything. There is an "Anti machine gun mode" which I don't have "On".

I'm starting to get into Toontrack stuff, and I haven't yet tried Addictive Drums... but, I will!

    Thanks for the comment!

  • I've tried everything, and Addictive Drums I've found to be the best, there is just so much to choose from you can create and drumkit sound.

  • I'll have to try it! Thanks for the advice!

  • thank you for sharing your experience.

Do you know if it's possible to combine more then one Alesis IO trigger, to expand the avaible Inputs? I need more than 10 triggers for my new drumkit.

  • I don't know for sure if it's possible, although it should be. I'm sure there's a way to link them via MIDI cable or something. If it's not possible to connect two (or more) IO's, I wonder if BFD (or any software drum mod) would recognize multiple IO's both going USB into the computer? Something to think about...

  • if u make money from this videos you are going to send me... that kit:P

  • You got it, brother!

  • I'm trying to understand the PC-Module-Triggers setup here. My experience with eDrums is using Roland module/pad setup. So you configure your software for the Kit you want? Does the Alesis module need to be configured? I didn't see a lot of specifics at the Alesis or drum software sites. Thanks, again.

  • In Roland terms, the Alesis IO is like the module, only the software samples are in your computer. The IO triggers the software via the drumset. The software houses all the samples of drums/cymbals, and yes, the IO needs tweaking, too. I find it's more for sensitivity and dialing in your different sound channels. The IO is the face, the software is the brain...

  • 2,400 and counting! I'm going to be starting production on the next video sometime tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for the continued support!

  • nice set, nice video

  • Thank you.

  • Nicely put, sir. And, yes... your kit sounds a little hotter than it really is just because of the mic placement... no biggie. It doesn't matter what you do, they still want more! But, keep an eye out for a new MikeyVPT video 8-) Anywho, Dezz's (TonyEnamel)video deals with the RET setup with DFHS. Definitely recommended! It actually got me interested in using both BFD AND DFH! Keep the comments flowing, no matter how brilliant they may be ;-)

  • -8pixel, The RET drums in my video sound louder (acoustically) than they actually are because the mic was between the drums. It didn't catch my voice enough so I had to boost the volume a bit. Having said that, The RET kit is still quite a bit louder than a mesh head kit but it feels way better. Good luck with the purchase.

  • -noahhawk92, I love your constructive comments! Let's see a video of your AWESOME rolands. BTW, RET drums don't make any sound and if you mean to say that your td3 or whatever sounds better than BFD, you should Fedex me some of whatever your smoking! I haven't been stoned since highschool so this should be fun.

  • Hey Mikey, Nice vid! You look like you're having fun with those. What HH controler pedal do you use? I'm having trouble getting my hats to trigger correcty with BFD. No problem with DFHS though.

  • What kind of settings do you have for your HH? I have a few tricks up my sleeve for working around some problems. I don't want to jinx this whole thing... but I think VPT is really getting some notice, don't you think? ;-)

  • That's officially 1,500 views for both vids! Keep it going!

Also official: I'll be on the road to Akron, Ohio to demonstrate my VPT setup in this years FutureDrum Symposium. I'll have video and pictures, for sure! I'll keep you updated as the date of the symposium is Sept. 22nd.

  • Normally, I'd comment, but I'd rather not dignify noahhawk92's post with a response...

    ;-)

    Thanks just the same!

  • i'm sorry but your RET drum set sounds like crap

you should get a Roland V Drum set which has better sounds than the RET drum kit

  • Thanks! I actually started a few years back with a Roland TD-3, it's a basic e-kit. It was good... for the time. I now play with the VPT pack which includes the BFD software. After playing with VPT, I can certainly hear the difference between Roland and RET.

I noticed that you've favorited Dezz (Tony Enamel)'s video. It's a great video to display acoustic audio from the drums. I jam everyday for hours and you can't hear them from just outside my house door!

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I found Dezz's video after seeing yours and although you mention that you can't hear your drums from outside your door, his video makes them seem quite loud (might be just the video itself though). I'm very new to this (although I've been dreaming of a V-Drum kit for years) so I'm still doing research. I'm hoping that these are less expensive than the Rolands as that is the main factor that has been keeping me from purchasing them. I'll keep researching. Thanks!!

  • Great setup and great vid! Just found out about this kit about 20 min ago and I am very impressed. Have you played the Roland kits and if so, how does this compare? Can you give an idea how much the kit itself costs (I can't seem to find prices on their website). Lastly, how loud is this kit with the volume off? Will my neighbors hate me? Thanks again and keep those vids coming!
