You learn something everyday. I always thought Frank Ifield's version in Aug 1962 was an original arrangement. Apparently not so if this was recorded in the early 1950's
Slim Whitman has the gift of a beautiful voice! No one can sing any kind of song - greater than Slim. Thank goodness he shared his fantastic music with us all. Marje Morgan..Member of The SWAS on Facebook...
Let's get this straight; it was Frank Ifield who brought this song back to life in 1962 and unless I'm mistaken Slim covered Frank on both the song and arrangement. That's not to say I don't like Slim singing the song, but let's get the facts right shall we?
@tarquin45 So Frank's version with the Norrie Parramore orchestra was indeed the original arrangement??? I recall it was #35 one week in the top 40, and #1 the next. I'll try to do some research on Slim Whitman's discography. Ifield had a purple patch of hits and they were big sellers in Australia.
My first love taught me how to dance to this this very tune in 1960; How prophetic. I will remember her when I recall the thrill of it all when my life is through too.
@desireee1939 ...heroes to their country, and carriers of love in life become like the angels in heaven...to enjoy eternal joy with God. You will see him again.
@JAT763 Exactly! I'm not really a Country and Western music fan having grown up on Pop and R&B,but why is it that just about every country and western song that I like, from either male or female C&W artists, hails from the '50s and '60s? Is it possibly because those older songs had some memorable melodies(one can hum), great instrumental licks, a simple message, and yes,a catchy "hook",among other things?
Sam Cooke said a good song has a "hook" line or sound.Today's C&W music has no "hooks". :(
@PalaniRides I love Slim Whitman's version of this song, but it was not originally written as C&W. It dates from 1941 and was composed as a ballad by Victor Schertzinger (the music) and Johnny Mercer (the lyric). During the '40s it was recorded by many pop stars. Several versions are available on YouTube.
How could anyone dislike this song? I should find those three people and punch them in the face while I sing this. Sing it with all my heart, tears streaming.
So beautiful. And it's got a great sound. You did a good job. Thanks alot. I love all of Slim's music. Such a voice. Thanks alot to you too Slim. Love you.
I just remember it as the song that repelled the Martian invasion in Mars Attacks
When I was a kid Ronco or some such company was marketing his albums, that was the first I ever heard of him, but apparently he was a big hit in England
I Remember my Grandfather listening to this! He's passed almost 3 years now, but yesterday I got to go through some of his old tapes! I picked out Slim, Conway Twitty and Boxcar Willie! :)
It's sad that people only know this song because of "house of 1000 corpses" but it got new people listing so guess in a way it's kind of good but still sad.
@TheYankeefan87 House of 1000 corpses? Never heard of it so thats good news. Bad news (if you'd consider this bad) Heard it from Beavis & Butthead! Either way, good song.
@ISLAVERDE29 well i like Beavis & Butthead so I'll look past it and like you said it's still a good song . the only good thing in the movie is this song and some of it's cast like Karen Black & Sid Haig .
Not really, most of "us" are forced to listen to this new pop crap, and therefore, unless our relatives show it to us, are unaware of some of these songs. So no, it's not exactly sad.
@AbyssCrown well who the fuck is forcing you to listen to the crap of today ,i choose to listen to what i want and so can you. you don't need a older person for you to know the great songs of the past, the songs are there and all you need to do is look for them.so it is SAD that YOU force yourself to listen to crap and that your to lazy to find something better.
Yes you do, because no one else reminds you of good singers such as Whitman. It doesn't just appear out of nowhere.
And I mean that not literal (that we're forced to listen to garbage music), I mean it's just around us. At any rate, you can't find good music that isn't promoted anymore, let alone rarely talked about.
@AbyssCrown if i came off like a "dick" i'm sorry and as far as the music that's all around it's simply a matter of listening to something else . i like some of the music today but I'm oldschool. i look for music that catches me , look and you'll find great thing's.a lot of song's are past down i'll you that and some were past down to me,but when you don't like the music of today and have no one to help guide you to better stuff then what do you do , look for something better.
Well, as long as you weren't intentionally being one than that is OK. BUt yes, it is about where to look to find good songs/singers/bands from the past, and I enjoy almost everything from the music of the 1960s through the 1800s. There may be the odd song that I like that was released in the present, but that is far and in between.
@AbyssCrownThank you i didn't mean to come off like a "dick", yes the 1960's and far back are great but you can't forget the 70's and some of the 80's, a little of the 90's . So please look and find the artist's that have been lost to time and enjoy , oh please tell me you know of Wanda Jackson?.if not then look and tell me what you think.
YEah, I've heard some of her music before awhile back, but never knew her name. Though yeah, I do like her music quite a bit. Which reminded me that I wished Jerry Lee Lewis did as much rockabilly as he did rock and roll, especially since his first cover, Crazy Arms.
@AbyssCrown Well sorry can't change the past LOL, plus i'm not a big fan of Jerry Lee Lewis i mean i like his music but if i hear "Great balls of fire" one more time i'll kill my self .so tell me what is your favorite rockabilly female artist? , mine is well Wanda Jackson.
@AbyssCrown,I don't mean to be pedantic (well actually I'm fully aware that I'm being pedantic but don't wish to restrain myself) You might find the expression is few and far between, rather than few and in between.Other than that, you make a fair point in your previous comment, music released in the last 10-20 years is mostly unimaginative drivvel, and you don't get the same quality in musicians anymore, you don't even have to hold a tune with auto tuners and computer enhancements they use now
It was written by Johnny Mercer as a tribute to Judy Garland who left him heart broken by marrying David Rose. He gave this song to her the day after she married Rose. It was originally introduced by Dorothy Lamour in the 1942 film "The Fleet's In."
@Gipdac1 Agree all the way. What made me search for Slim Whitman and this song was from one of the older episodes of Beavis and Butthead which was mad funny!! Its the "Ballon" episode if your wondering. Go search it here on youtube cause it's so funny. If you have problems finding it here let me know.
That song was at the scene when Otis Driftwood and Mother Firefly kills 2 of the local cops. My favorite scary movie is the Devil's Rejects the sequel to House of 1,000 Corpses.
I heard Slim singing Rosemarie in mid-50's stuck ever since as perfect....then I heard I remember you - far better than Frank Ifield's version - what a voice, what a voice!
Very handsome man. And a truly unique voice. What a talent! THANKS for sharing this delightful "blast from the past" with us! May ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year! :)

@jajus125100 Lol, learn how to correctly spell and punctuate before using the Internet. Unless you're utilizing it to exploit how much of a degenerate you are. You are honestly the scum of the earth that I wipe off the bottom of my shoes. And thanks for noticing how wise my comment was :). However, due to your botched writing, I could not conceive what you posted afterwards. "Looks or it is posted by a 13 years old lost in a for him too..." Take your dad's dick out of your ass while typing.
@ijurcough Lawl, you're almost as bad as the kid you're talking down to. Usin' dem big ol' words to try an' make 'em feel dumb, shame on you! Utilizing it to... exploit how much of a degenerate he is? By stating his opinion on a song on YouTube? Don't you think that's a stretch? I'm gonna go ahead and say you're an idiot, and I'm willing to bet you're a freshman in highschool, or just becoming one, based on your "look down my nose at you" perspective.
@TehPwnage1337h4x0rz Why are you jumping in on a conversation? If you're saying what I have done is "such a stretch"--by the way, nice use of a cliche i.e. an instantaneous example of an inflammatory response--then what you're doing is far worse than my response. By the way, who can take you seriously with your screen-name? Nice grammar. Spelling with numbers? This is sickening. Now go back to your mother who has a UTI :). And by your usage of ad hominems, I bet you have a lisp. Trolled :D.
@TehPwnage1337h4x0rz Now go back to that little hole you crawled out of, aka your parents' bed. Stop living on your dad's juice and hot pockets, get laid (oh wait, my bad--you already have "LAWL"). Also, nice talking like a hick. Now I'm positive that you are a mamzer. Wanna-be troll. You just trolled yourself. Now be a good little bitch and do as I say :). By way, typing like a jackass will only make you lose credibility. As for now, I'm done replying to you. I don't converse with imbeciles
Lol, thank you for attempting to type correctly. But, you failed once again. Nice caps lock too, lol. What's up with your fragment sentence? Man, you really need to work on your inferiority complex. You should probably start bowing down to me :D. Starting... now!

@braineater316 this is the version I remember best - there's a later version that just sounds like yodeling that I really don't care for

@freakyartist16 Something about that scene and this song that works magic. Its so out of place that it makes it creepier.

@freakyartist16 That movie sucks dick. It's a pity that you only know about this song from some B-rated, wanna-be horror movie. Disgusting.

@ijurcough What a wise comment, looks or it is posted by a 13 years old lost in a for him too intelligent world
jajus125100 9 months ago

Trolled :D.
ijurcough 9 months ago
@TehPwnage1337h4x0rz Now go back to that little hole you crawled out of, aka your parents' bed. Stop living on your dad's juice and hot pockets, get laid (oh wait, my bad--you already have "LAWL"). Also, nice talking like a hick. Now I'm positive that you are a mamzer. Wanna-be troll. You just trolled yourself. Now be a good little bitch and do as I say :). By way, typing like a jackass will only make you lose credibility. As for now, I'm done replying to you. I don't converse with imbeciles
ijurcough 9 months ago
@ijurcough LOL you IMBECILES! Trolled in school too hard? Kiddo's super angry!
TehPwnage1337h4x0rz 9 months ago
Lol, thank you for attempting to type correctly. But, you failed once again. Nice caps lock too, lol. What's up with your fragment sentence? Man, you really need to work on your inferiority complex. You should probably start bowing down to me :D. Starting... now!
