  • not every dude can pull off a pink shirt like Jim can. oh and I don't have a middle name at all, but I like it when Americans have like their grandparents' or parents' names as second names :) and I dont know whether you made a video about it - duzen/siezen?

  • of course we have short forms in germany

    josef= sepp

    johann = hans

    georg = schorsch

friedrich = fritz ... and so on

  • IN GERMAN EDUARD GO TO EDDY XD

  • at the end some woman is talking in hungarian

  • da muss man im herbst hochfahren :)

  • I have two middle names, Hunter and Nicole. My birth name is Nicholas Hunter Nicole Hurst, Da fuck dad? -.- My second middle name is my older sister's, raggle fraggle! I wouldve been fine with Hunter but no he has to give me a second middle name. Fick.

  • Hey , Alex ! Kommste aus Georgsmarienhütte ? :)

  • i went there when i went to germany, the rhein valley is beautiful.

  • haha, i can see my former school in this video :<

Macht weiter so

    - What you're doing is very commendable for the relationship between Americans and Germans. Keep it up

  • At some point in the video you said in credits, you will see middle names/ initials in america, this is not actually because people place importance on them, its really because Screen Actors Guild (The Labor union for Television and film actors) mandates that no actor goes by a name identical to one someone already used. For example Michael J Fox (Back To The Future) added a J (which is not actually his real middle initial) in order to avoid confusion with Michael Fox (Who was in Perry Mason)

  • The nickname for the not very common german name "Ignaz" is "Nazi".

  • hats and cycling glasses...ahhh you Amercians (eyes rolling)

  • ther are more big statues in europe than in he usa =P

  • We in Austria do use initials (Paraphen) but only for not offical documents like for example if you get a delivery. Furthermore in German the word "Initalen" only stands for the first letter of your name, not for a abbreviated signature, which is called "Paraphe".

  • Joseph can be "Sepp" too in Germany...

  • the picture at 0:39 makes Alex look like he has a peg leg :D

    PIRATE ALEX, FTW!

  • I love the Dick Cheney remark :)

  • Bill and Tom Kaulitz from the German band Tokio Hotel have no middle names.

  • I have a funny story to the nametags:

I went to the cinema in Duisburg, and the usher took my card and told me where to go, an when I looked at his nametag, it said: A. Schloch

Which means asshole in German if you say it (Arschloch).

Gibt eigentlich keine schönere Landschaft in Deutschland

  • @Gurumeierhans

    klar die nordsee =)

  • OMG OMG OMG ive been there AAAAAAA this is totaly cools

Greets from Bielefeld, and keep us entertained, love your show, guys!!

  • Joseph = Sepp ;)

  • Jaja die ganzen Kevins, Justins, Jaquelines, Jennifers, Chantalles usw :P

  • was war da was ihr am ende angeguckt habt?

  • First of all, your show is awesome guys.

I've heared once, that in america the middle name shows The status of the family where you come from. kids without middlename are considered to come from por families.

btw, Rüdesheim is a nice village. i've been living a few kilometers from there a couple of years ago, but my current home is near osnabrück and right now i am staying a year in canada. where du you come from, alex?

  • I'm from a little village near Osnabrück as well ;-) ...where exactly are you from?

  • @AlexandJim I'm from Bad Essen

  • @AlexandJim I'm from Bad Essen

  • @AlexandJim Osnabrück? OMG That's were I'm living :) Alex where r u from? Münster, Bad Laer, Melle?

  • @AlexandJim

  • I am from Bavaria and here we have lots of names who are changed to a shorter form (usually used by friends):

    e.g. Josef -> Sepp

    Magdalena -> Lene

    Sebastian -> Wast(l)

    Matthias -> Hias

    ...

see also wikipedia ->"Liste der bairischen Vornamen"

  • wow..:37 he does have a wooden leg ....lol:P

  • Sasha = Alexander

  • richt aber das ist russich^^

    russian^^

  • haha when i first saw :37 i thought he had a wooden leg

  • I don't think I have ever seen a more beautiful part of Germany. Thanks for the video!

  • Watching this video made me wonder; Alex, is your first name Alexander, or is it just Alex?

By the way, I love the show.

  • haha, verdammt :D

du bist echt soooo deutsch :D

also repräsentierst und doch sehr süß ;)

und mir fällt grade was ein:

ich trink immer tee zum abendbrot :D!!!!!!!

  • judith, oliver and paul are not american names ;) judith is hebrew, oliver is latin or german... from the german for elf and warrior and paul is latin.... judith, oliver and paul are the german notations. and english is based on the west germanic language

  • It's rather the case that a lot of names which you consider "American" are de facto German^^

  • does alex get paid by coca cola company?

there is always a bottle in his hands. :)

  • there was a article in a german newspaper about english names in germany. a sociologist said that the german underclass give their children english names, because they're trying to be modern. but english names are a disadvantage in the society. People have prejudices. it's like names ending wie -Y- in the US, OZ, Canada... like billy, jimmy, etc. a guy called billy must be a hillbilly :)

  • ahh i guess alex is right about the whole american name thing in eastern germany. my favorite band tokio hotel is from germany, and the lead singers are named bill and tom. the are from Magdeburg which is in east germany :)

  • 7:21 xD so geil

  • or Pepi in Austria (but Sepp is also used). Or Toni for Anton is popular too.

  • Great video :) I'm not generally opposed to English names in Germany. It just sounds weird if it doesn't match the last name (eg Justin Müller) or if they spell it German (eg Dschastin).

Btw the statue you saw there (the Niederwalddenkmal) represents Germany! Her name is Germania. She's standing there to look over to what used to be the French side of the Rhine river and defend Germany against the French ;)

  • Where's Alex from again? He spoke German and I thought "wow Bayern."

And I'm suprised they didn't talk about how in the US, you can name your kid Mickey Mouse, but in Germany they have rules about what names you're allowed to give your kids and what names you're not.

  • You actually can't name your kid Mickey Mouse in the US, because Mickey Mouse is copyrighted and you can't use it. However, you can name your kid anything that isn't copyrighted. I heard about someone naming their daughter Talula does the Hula (seriously!) and someone in Atlanta, Georgia naming their identical twin boys Orangello and Lemongello (based off of orange jello and lemon jello!!!).

  • I'm sorry but there ARE people named Mickey Mouse. It actually came up during the Minnesota primaries while they were debating which ballots were good and which were bad. Whoever told you that told you wrong.

So yeah, anything goes in the US, but Germany has some rules about names.

  • haha really Justin is weird to you? :P lol . in Canada it's a really common name I guess Americans and Canadians would probably have the same names. :) man I love watching your show!! It's very entertaining.

hmm there is something I've been wondering about .. what about the medical systems in the USA and Germany?

  • Yes it is weird (a little bit).

As weird as german names like Knut, Thorsten, Hans, Heinrich or Wolfgang (not all very common, but well known) in Canada.

  • wow :) ahha , yea I have never heard them , well I've heard Wolfgang but outside of that I don't know a lot of German names.

  • Ok. The germans usually know names like Justin, Brad or Ethan from tv or cinema,.....

But it doesn´t fix to the german pronunciation.

  • haha oh I see. I guess I know of Hans, and I know Hagen , Klaus, Wolfgang, Moritz , Gustav , Georg :) haha yea thats about it.

  • I never got a middle name. The ton of middle names thing stopped with my grandparents.

Glad I found this new channel of yours :)

  • nice vid! (as usual^^)

I love to hear you talk about so common things of the everyday-life to make people all over the world understand it.

    :)

  • Great show (as usual) ;) I would just like to add that there are stricter rules for given names in Germany than in the US. For example it would not be possible to call a child Dakota in Germany, on the other hand, it is a fairly common name in the US.

  • thing is, these rules are quite arbitrary and vary widely between municipalities. in one town you may call your child Dakota, Merlin or Tecumseh if you like and in the other Maria is not acceptable, cause it's "not gender-specific"...

  • Ok, I didn't know that. Thanks for clearing it up! Btw in Germany, you can have non-gender-specific names, as long as you have a middle name which is gender-specific.

  • Joseph: Joschka :P

  • My name's Joshua Fern. I have an American first name and a German last name.

  • A & J ---Great episode ---as usual. I willl get to visit Germany again for the first time during the holiday season of Christmas. How about an episodea bout the differences in the December - Jaunary holidays and traditions? Even if you each do a section form your own coutries and areas.....this could be awesome. By the way.....if you don't mind sharing.......what editing software do you use for your videos? The diting and production quality is really great!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

  • You need a middle name; how else do you know if your folks are mad at you

  • Macht doch mal eine Show aus Hamburg ;)

  • my name is jared and im germen but im named after a person in the bibel and i have two middle names too : )

  • nice intro, you guys :D

  • great intro/exit!!!

  • : D if i look out of my window i can see the niederwalddenkmal : )

  • Comment removed

  • Modifications of German names (especially in the south, in Austria and Southtyrol): Georg : Jörg Josef : Sepp Friedrich : Fritz/Friedl Martin : Martl Agnes : Nese Maria : Moidl Heinrich : Heinz Johann : Hans Creszenz : Zenzi Adelheid : Heidi
  • Why do Germans have two middle names?? I find it odd but also kind of cool! hehe :-D Great video guys!!!!!!!!

  • long name-chains are sometimes used as a remembrance of ancestors.

Our minister of defense for example has the name "Karl-Theodor Maria Nikolaus Johann Jacob Philipp Franz Joseph Sylvester Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg" because he was born into an aristocratic family.

  • YEEEEAAAAH NOW I GET THE OLD FEELING BACK!!!! i like your intro and stuff like that

  • i prefere the american way of calling people by their first name (also because i like my first name better than my last name). it just creates a friendlier mood. and i know that in sweden people normally only call each other by their first names (e.g. students sometimes do not even know their teachers last name!)

  • Do i need glasses or does Alex need more space on the screen from video to video?

  • In Austria, middlenames are not important at all. Some people don't even have one...

Who is the girl working with you? Can't you introduce her?

  • She is a friend of me...she is also the one holding the Jim photo in one of the earlier videos.

  • I already thought so. Greet Nina for me. ;)

    Nice intro btw.

  • @xxxxGirlNextDoorxxxx You're from Austria? Hello there mate! Just messin with you, i'm actually a Neighbor, hello from Germany :D

About the Names, in more rural Areas in Germany, the abbreviation of "Elisabeth" would be "Lisbeth".

  • What about Johan and Hans??

  • The new intro is better than the one before ;-)

    great work

  • Wann kommt das Wattenmeer dran? :) oder die Ostsee ;)

  • Lol

Alex had a bottle of Coca Cola light in his hands :D

  • Alexander = Sascha !!!!!!!

  • Rüdesheim ^^ gar nich so weit weg

  • Hey Guys - when have you been to Berlin? Was there 2 weeks ago - would have been cool to meet you :(

  • but you forgot one of the most important things... in germany, you can't give your child just any name, if the registrar thinks the name is stupid, and the child will suffer because of it, (s)he can refuse that name and the parents will have to come up with something else.

as far as i know that's differentin the usa, right?

  • Probably yes..

i heard of a child named "Adolf Hitler " with first Name somewhere in in the south of the USA..

and a pastry cook refused to bake a birtday cake with that name on it...

  • yes. Something like that would usually never happen in the us. Sometimes you even get kids named after superheros or television and movie stars. It is usually always up to the parents to decide the name and the registrar rarley gets involved.

  • That is so true!

Also seit vorsichtig, wem Ihr euren Mittelnamen verratet :)

  • Wieder was gelernt :)

  • my husband's middle name is Maria...gotta love it

  • What if someone's last name was a language. I know a few people who's last name is English.

So their name tag would be " _ Englisch" Or "_ English"

And would be said as Herr Englisch or Frau Englisch.

  • Pleeaaase come to the Allgäu and visit the Fellhorn!

    It's great!

  • yay! y'all got an intro now! lol

  • In German isn't the nickname for Frederich, Fritz? Maybe that was just my host family... They had nicknames for each member.

  • You are right, Fritz is the nickname of Friedrich.

  • Waaaaas? Echt? :D Scheiße, wusste ich nicht :D

  • my name is Jay, how wrong would that sound in Germany?

  • Really (I mean REALLY) wrong.

Jay doens't fit to any german last name I know. Something like Jay Müller or Jay Richter would sound...well, just wrong.^^

  • Also bei uns heißt Josef immer Sepp. Johann wird Hannes etc.

  • bei uns auch... bist du aus österreich?

  • jo \(^_^)/

  • Haha!!

Kevin und Josef sind meine Namen!! Josef ist mein Vorname, Kevin ist mein Mittlerername! xD

    Cooles Video wie immer!!

  • love you guys!!!!!

  • u guys like 2 drink dont u?? hahaha....

  • I lot of people in the former GDR gave their kids American names in the mid 80s - maybe a way to protest the regime. A few years ago, this trend seemed to reappear nation-wide, especially in low class households (no offence).

  • It's so true that english names are trendy in germany. I was named Danny and my brother is called Steven. Thank you Denver Clan for giving use our names although we'll never watch it.^^

  • Oh, I think it's better that we don't use the classic German names. Otherwise your name could be Kunnigunde, Hildebrandt, Walther, Wernher, Gunther, Gernot, Friedrich, Karl, Kriemhilt, Ingmar, Gieselheer or Karl. Some of them are not too bad but the rest is... a little bit ancient.

  • geht doch mal nach heidelberg ;-)

    lohnt sich

  • Damn!My old band members call me Jup!

    =D

  • great intro! love the shows guys, keep up the good work :)

  • Ah-Hello! You forgot Alexander=Alex! Lol.

  • Das Subskreibern lohnt sich :)

    mfg Markus ^^

  • your show are getting better and better, it's a pleasure to watch you

  • Interesting Video. I didn't even know Kevin was an English name. Probably because it's pronounced pretty much the same in German and English. And I loved the scenery.
